You don't "respect experience" enough to say something like that. '94 WC Abyss will turn your judiciousness into orange juice puke. You'll be so (-)(-)(-)(-)ing stymied that you won't be able to check the forums once every 3 days. The 22 elite-members of [E] will run you down because fail is nigh. O+

I guess it's time for me to get active making levels again. I stopped because of too much personal stress. I didn't have enough time to finish the levels, and that's why I threw out the Christmas Server idea.
Anyways:

That level looks good, and I suppose it's Single Player because of the food and the layout.
@Jimbob: that level looks decent, but at the other side I don't see anything special (yet) but keep working on it and it might become good.

jimbob, looks decent.. but yet.. seems really standard.. but who knows it might change into something gorgeous! my first thought at now was that it looked a lot like device by darksonic and snooze.
also.. you shouldn't use levelname things over and over again.. you also had a level named emerald forest and there are so many levels with those standard names with "emerald" in it. (emerald eye by plunk for example).
and 3rd question/thingy :P... did veg ever made a crysillis conversion? i mean.. never known veg would've make one. (<s>as he is just some lazy not buildi--</s>) :-). the conversion i know was by Violet.. not sure if you mean him.. but if you don't then i recommend you to use it instead.. as it's probably better.

Sorry that I haven't posted any updates in a while. I couldn't post any updates since I had a lack of an Internet connection for a few weeks (due to failure to pay the bills).
Anyways, just to clear things up:
I am not making any levels called 'Emerald Gold Mines' since it looks like it's already taken.
I am now out of school and I will actually have time to work on my level pack again, since I stopped temporarily due to overwhelming personal stress. I have renamed the third level to "Starlight Mountains" and added a little bit more. Screenshots might come later.
P.S. Stupid me, I thought Veg made the conversion. It was Violet, sorry ;p

This is still coming along. Notable features from GHZ that will not make the cut include the roll-through walls (probably), the S-tunnels, and the spiked bridges. I had the art all done up for the spikes to rotate around and hurt you a lot, but with six different enemies in the level, plus a boss (trying not to use "guardian" levels) and some environmental details, adding in the spike art caused JJ1 to run out of memory. So that won't be happening!

I really like how that screenshot looks, the ambient lighting used there adds a lot of atomsphere.
However, there are a few (unpreventable?) tile bugs, such as the "missing piece" of the shadowing underneath the floor, which just doesn't look right. Still, nice job.

Good to see people using that tileset (either TSF or 1.23 version). I find it's very underused, and like it a lot better than the city tileset. Great palette on that particular version, too.
Now if only I could get my hands on that tileset p4ul posted...
At least we have snooze's screenshot to drool over in the mean time. Projects which use custom made tilesets are the best.

This cute lil' fellow is more trouble to get working than he's worth, really, but badniks are something I don't want to leave out. Actually the whole zone/planet/whatever is a bit of a trial... I've had to reorganize the palette a few times, and initial testing has already revealed that several of my initial plans for features won't work because JJ1 doesn't handle the relevant behaviors quite the way I hoped it did. Expect a stripped down Marble Zone with as much as I can figure out how to cram in but not everything by any means.
Snooze, nice background. Layers with speeds beyond 1/1 are never much cared for, and that's a great job at making a reasonable background that still uses tiles rather than (exclusively) precomposed images.

Definitely some things to look forward to here. The sp pack with new tilesets is especially interesting. Since it'll use new tilesets we expect to see a lot of creative ideas, since you aren't limited to what premade sets offer. Oh, and the quality looks good so no worries.

Good to see you're still working on that pack.
It's also great to see that more Onslaught levels are being made, as it's one of the most fun types of Assault in my opinion. The screenshot looks fine, aside from the fact that I think the fade colour is a little too bright and so clashes with the rest of the level. I suggest making it just a little bit darker, and this should improve things.

I started to make an assault lvl a little while ago and its going to be pretty nice in my eyes if i look how its going now. Little downside is that it uses 1.24 because it has more then 1024 tiles + animation tiles (Using the tileset Islands). However if i got the motivation to finish this it will probably be a verry unique lvl (Eh, yeah many levels are unique...). Im also using the reworder for a big part of the gameplay (Not saying that this is special or makes the level great).
Dont think that many people care about this level, I cant provide screenshots because my way of making levels is kinda different then others. But still, this might become a nice assault level :)

So I'm just about complete with Memories 3: Imagination. Haha I know it's been quite some time since the start of this pack. What was it, April? May? Who cares, it's just about done.
I could have released this pack 2 months ago, but 5 levels seemed limited to what I originally wanted, which was like 8. Anyways, I need beta testers, and I'm in no hurry to release this pack right away. So please, if you want to help, give me a PM On J2O/JCF, or e-mail me. (On Profile) Note, this pack contains no CTF or Battle levels (Secret: Maybe at the release), so if you just want to seek out tile bugs, feel free to!
Also, I've had many mixed feeling about also making a CTF version of my JB level, The penitentiary system. So if you want to give your opinions, please do. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, give me a PM, including your e-mail address and I'll send the level right over!
I should be hosting these levels towards the end of November, so hopefully I'll be able to get some live action beta testing going on, as I will have a lot of free time after this weekend. Well that's about it from me. Hope to hear your responses! :)

That third one is ugly but obviously a work in progress (going to assume those textures are placeholders). Could turn out to be a good tileset, since I don't know of many tilesets with that theme. I suggest avoiding using photos/3d renderings as your backgrounds though, they simply do not translate well to 256 colour at all.

Going to have to say I like the original version's textures a lot more. The "stone" ones especially are a bit too busy and don't fit the look of the rest of the tileset. They remind me of something from an early gus tileset. Also, for the 1 tile blocks that are featured in the ceiling, there is a very repetitive look to the texture. I think at the very least, the contrast needs to be lowered on them, so they don't jump out so much.

I've been playing around with making a new CTF level. I'm mainly done, but have had absolutely no beta testing yet, so there's a chance that it's going to have awful gameplay or something, and I'll have to pretty much throw out the whole thing. And the eyecandy is somewhat silly, inspired by swiss cheese almost.

There are a good number of springs and suckers, so (in theory) being able to predict your enemy should allow you to hurt him pretty easily in some areas. However, there are enough different ways to get to the flags, carrots, and power-ups that hopefully it won't simply degrade into a game of camping.
Also, the level has pits. But I know how frustrating pits are, so there is a coin warp over the pits, and if you manage to grab enough coins, and not fall too much, you can avoid this annoyance. Unless, of course, your enemy hits you with some freezers at the wrong time.

I think he is talking about the yellow object. As of far i'm not sure whether I like it or not. Game play I cannot put into consideration at this moment for obvious reasons. The tileset is a bit confusing, It doesn't seem to fit with other tiles.A comparison would be hell containing icebergs and water. You should alter the colors in my opinion. Good luck.

I'm feeling inspired or something, because I'm actually motivated to make levels again, it seems. I did a little testing of the level from my previous post, and it seems the pits are rather too easy to fall into, until you learn the level fairly well. This learning curve may discourage people from playing it, but I still think it has potential.
But anyway, I whipped up a level that's rather the opposite. There are really no secrets, four power-ups, two full NRG's and every type of ammo except freezers, for fast, chaotic, easy-to-learn gameplay. The eyecandy's probably a bit simple, but I like the tileset, and think it works.

Oops, thanks for catching that, Puffie.
I'm using BattleShipsBL for the swiss cheese level, and Zodiac (I'm assuming this is the one you're asking about) by Chiyu for the other one.
I also started another level with Diamondus ß Scorch, but the current total lack of eyecandy has dissuaded me from posting any screenshots yet. I wasn't really planning on anything, but it looks like a little CTF pack may be in the works now, if my motivation to JCS doesn't disappear as suddenly as it came.

This level is a bit more standard than my last two, in my opinion. It contains Toaster, RF, and Seeker power-ups, as well as two plain carrots and one full energy (unless I change my mind). Flags are captured in two tall sucker tubes at either side of the level. However, each base, and the ceiling spring required to get the seeker power-up can easily be shot from the side, allowing one to hurt opponents trying to get either a flag or the seekers.
EvilMike
Jan 14, 2010, 02:27 PM
Interesting gameplay, but make sure you work on the background. The first screenshot is particularly drab and doesn't have much to show. This isn't totally just to make the level prettier either: right now, all I see there is a blue spring and a large mass of grey. There's nothing to indicate where that blue spring actually <i>goes</i>.
Troglobite
Jan 14, 2010, 10:00 PM
Thanks you very much for the advice. I changed the background a bit, to hopefully make it a bit more varied, and better-looking. And now that you point it out, I do realize that there isn't much explanation for where things lead. I had kind of assumed that people would figure out how to best use it after playing around on the level for a while, but this is the kind of assumption I don't think I should make as a level designer. I noticed that on the swiss cheese level, from the short amount of testing I did do, everyone else fell in the pit very much, and didn't seem motivated to play the level enough to figure out how to avoid this. Since I knew the level, I knew several different ways to get anywhere, and figured these paths would become apparent much more easily to players unfamiliar with the level than they did. I will have to get in the habit of making my levels more friendly to those who don't know them.
Oh, and I started a level with a Bloxonious tileset that's got some fun trigger stuff. I think I'll have to use Reworder for some of it, and hopefully i get it to work right.

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/troglobite/JazzDarkForest/seekers2.png
These are from a bit of an anti-level I whipped up really quickly. Nothing but seeker ammo is available, and the majority of walls are one way, so the seekers are even more deadly. I hate this type of seek-spam favoring gameplay. However, I know not everyone shares my opinion on seekers, so I figured I should make a level that people who aren't me would like.

well yes it seems. its quite sad how many people dont seem to accept the efforts in that when you try to design something new. personally i would find using some other sets then my own ones stupid. actually, ive decided that all my upcoming levels will use my own sets, because that helps designing alot.

Mar 9, 2010, 09:40 AM
Not sure... the Jungrock leaves stand out so much that they look as if they're masked. They're also too rectangular to come off as organic. The cave background blends in with the Stonar blocks too much. The Stonar stuff looks somewhat washed out in general, too - specifically the formerly red bricks, they need more contrast. The owl's eyes are wrong - the pupils should be red and the white should remain white, but I dunno if that looks good on a shrunk owl. Quite a few tilebugs in the level too.
I am excited for the layer background though.
Violet CLM
Mar 9, 2010, 03:57 PM
Thanks. Yeah, this one's giving me a lot of trouble, mostly with palette but not exclusively. I'll try to work on contrast (which has been noted before as a problem for me), thanks for confirming suspicions. Really I just allocated too few tiles to do too many things. I am curious to know what you identify as tilebugs though (as if it really matters for an example level), and by "the cave background blend[ing] in with the stonar blocks," do you mean the purple bricks or the gray blocks? If the latter I don't see that at all.

So far this has been fun to design and whatnot. It will be most likely one of my last 2 projects, and my hopefully also my best one. :)
EDIT: what to do is also add some lightning. I also took other screenshot off, because the level looks bad in screenshots..

Here's a cave-in scene from A Pipe Dream - a level I'm working on. I might make it into a pack if reviews are good enough, but it's going to take like a year. This level is HUGE.

I just set an arbitrary number: 512x256. I've used up about 1/4 of that space so far, but there are very few "open air" type areas. I have a thing about wasting space.

It's something like 60% done in two months, so I just can't imagine making smaller level a year. Don't you drink snzspeed?

It looks good, and should turn out to be a good tileset, but I suggest that you try to find something to make it a bit more unique. Right now the tileset is very similar to townsville 2, judging by those screenshots. Ask yourself what you can add to it that will make it different from anything else out there.

I've also just noticed how messed up some of the proportions are. The bin is almost as large as that door, and the fence in the background hills also seems to be massive, considering those are distant hills, they give the impression that the fence is much taller than it should be.
Aside from that, the tileset looks very promising so far.

Distance is a matter of scroll speed. If the hills scroll quickly then the fence isn't so large. The screenshot makes them look distant, but they might not be in the actual level.

Evilmike: Townsville 2 did give me some inspiration, but I have some ideas to make it a bit more unique, thanks!
PurpleJazz: The fence has been bugging me a little. Dunno yet. It's still a work-in-progress though, and I'm less than 1/4 of the way there.
Torkell: I see. This is the 3rd texture, so I'll fiddle around further.
Thanks for the comments!

That looks evil, but at the same time I can tell you're putting a lot of thought into where things go in the level. Looks good overall.
I'd suggest not putting the bat inside the wall like that though. It looks weird, and it's annoying for the player when they can't shoot it while it's resting.
Vegito
Apr 21, 2010, 05:28 AM
Shouldn't you be able to shoot it even there? Might not work with blaster, should work with bouncer (duh) or toaster/gun 9 though..
EvilMike
Apr 21, 2010, 01:51 PM
Well yeah, other weapons would work. But still, it's a kind of weird thing to have to do, and besides that, it just looks weird to have a bat living inside a solid wall.

There's a newer version of the system. It actually uses 30 triggers (1-31) and some complex systems. (Actually, it's pretty straightforward for me)
Every trigger crate uses 5-event MCE to generate a specific crate (thanks to Nerd).
