Aah, another Christmas-y level. While this is not the first Christmas level this year, let’s hope it’s certainly not the last either.

Gameplay: Nice
This battle level has a typical DS-layout. Not too complex, yet it does the trick of looking very carefully built. Icy Environment carries an action-packed feeling, created by the large amount of useful ammo. Three different power-ups (no seeker) add to the tactical use of weapons.

The level is basicly divided into two areas. The lower level and the rest. The lower level isn’t much interesting, since all of the PU’s and carrots are above it, but it does have various ‘shortcuts’ to the above level, including the outer edges both leading to two of the three carrots present. The third and last carrot sits safely on his platform high in the level.

On the lower section are two crossing tubes, one propelling you upward and the other propelling you to the other side. Both are handy to escape a rabbit on your tail, since they can give you quite a head start if you keep on running afterwards.

There are three PUs to be found. Bouncers come in handy for shooting the people on the platforms below. RF missiles can easily haunt a player down walking either in the top or bottom paths, since they’re long and straight. The Toaster PU comes in a little less handy, but can still be used in a way only the Toaster can be used; just block the path of narrow corridors with tons of flames. A player is almost bound to run into those soon enough.

Overall, nice gameplay and use of ammo dispersion.

Atmosphere: Even nicer
This level has a typical DS-atmosphere (where have I heard that before?). The tileset is used to the extreme, providing us with lots of goodness for the eye. The platforms can easily be made out for solid walls and it’s quite obvious what is supposed to be the background.

Speaking of which, the background is plainly gorgeous. DS makes use of the tileset like rarely anyone has ever seen before, creating an original background, as well as ‘wall-eyecandy’. Simply charming little details fill your heart with Christmas spirit as you run by killing rabbits.

The music choice is a whole different story, though. It seems DS is rather fond of his collection of Sonic the Hedgehog tunes. I myself, however, get rather bored by these tunes easily. Several DS levels already include music from this franchise, and I can’t really appreciate this. It does add to the feel of the level, on the other hand, but I personally would rather play without the music on.

Overall: Very nice
Icy Environment gives a whole new, refreshing look to Nippius. Festivity is in the air and this should occasionally be hosted, especially during the season.

Download Recommendation: Yes
Of course.

Score: 8.1
This level, Icy Environment, gives a whole new twist to Christmas levels in a way that neither the Holiday Hare 94 nor the Holiday Hare 98 sets could bring.

Well well, this is review #100, and what a download to review!
Lava Reef is a fun level, utilizing the Chrysilis V3 tileset in some new and creative ways. The different colored layers in the bg are nice, the music fits the level perfectly. What a cool thing!
No real bugs, nice. The level did get kind of boring after a while, and did seem kind of pitifully sized. Eyecandy was just fine.
So, if you wanna go fix it up, I would recommend you go and increase size just a wee bit…It’ll add some great new appeal. Maybe a little break here in there with monotony and all. You level has greeeat potential. DL rec.

A fun DOM. The tileset is used in an interesting way to mimmick that of the S&K level Lava Reef, and the result looks pretty decent, however it feels a bit overdone or confusing it places. Gameplay is solid, nice CP placement and in general there is nothing really to complain about. This gets a solid 8, worth downloading and hosting a few times.

This level reminds me of Aend in the aspect that it is open, yet at the same time very tunnely, a common type of layout in a more enclosed level. Since the level is open, there is plenty of room to move around in, yet it’s built in a way that it won’t get chaotic. Theme and EC seem good enough, music is a solid choice.

Well, well! Another good level! This one happens to be by DarkSonic and Snooze, and is in general a nice, open [somewhat, it is a little cramped, but not too bad…] battle with good eyecandy, a fitting music track, and some great potential. I do think the title doesn’t fit it very well, though. Anyways, Good eyecandy [waterfalls, skyscrapers, mountains,a lake, the level has a rural, yet citylike feel that describes it quite well.], good music, overall good, so go dl right now before you are condemned to eternal and violent and painful garbage duty, until your dying breath and way beyond!!!

Theme & Atmosphere8.2/10

A mountainy lakeside at sunset with some buildings (perhaps the Device Testing HQs?). Nothing extremely original, so no exceptionally high rating. While it looks like a peaceful evening near a lake, it may also feel slightly creepy (+0.2 for that). Why? Well, Awesome’s music gives this a sad/kind of scary feeling at some parts of the track. Also, while the textured background’s fade looks quite evening-ish, the color also gives a ‘polluted’ feeling (perhaps polluted by the Device…?).

Eyecandy8.4/10

Very good EC, looks quite natural, there’s variation (well mostly, just one place I don’t quite like), etc. I especially like the waterfall at 22,50 – if you’ll do similar things in your levels, make it look like in Device! Rather no tilebugs (or it is just me – I don’t have eyes like Rag’s, but oh well since I guess he played this several times he’d point them out), which is a good thing. I like how the natural cave tiles fit with the background bricks. No ‘random’ or spammed ec as well. One complaint about variation – I’d like the bricks in the wall to the left of 8,35 to have more variation when it comes to width or height. Also this is probably just me, but I don’t like one more place – around 33,46. The bg bricks there look kinda out of place… probably just me, but I don’t like it.

Bonuses/BOOnuses – nice waterfall (+0.1), kinda lack of variation in bottom-left wall (-0.1), bricks that are kind of out-of-place (-0.1) – -0.1

Ah, I bet my review will get -20 (or so) helpful ratings for this section :< anyway, here goes. The layout is nice and pretty easy to learn, gj (mostly) ds. It’s easy to get from place to place, no cramped spots or similar things. Ammo and other pickups are placed very well too, they’re easy to reach and no place feels like it has too much or too little ammo. No revolutional shapes of pickups (I like the pepperspray cluster at 41,17 though) but at least they aren’t 3×3 blocks or similar shapes ;PPP PUs are placed well, pretty gj with the suckertubes that transport you to other places after you kick the PU or just want to run away (only the toaster doesn’t have a suckertube behind, but you can kick it facing right and you’ll be able to instantly get outta there). No rabbit bias either, I’ve played this with both Jazz and Spaz and it’s as easy to navigate through the level with Jazz as with Spaz.

Final Verdict – A very good battle by Snooze and DS. You have no excuse not to download this, and I’m sure this will be in AB11.

I haven’t reviewed for a while. Now it’s time.

Eyecandy is something what you normally don’t see in tube electric levels. I like the way how you have used transculent bricks in the level. Background is nice and i like the fade colour in textured background. Also I didn’t find any tilebugs. I can’t say more about eyecandy.

Gameplay is pretty simple. Layout is very easy to learn. There are lots of ammo but not too much and PU’s are placed well. Springs and tubes are well placed so flow is pretty good. But after all gameplay doesn’t give anything new and inspiring and thats why I am little dissapointed.

Overall this level is nice and I’m not suprised that this level is in Anniversary Bash 10 but still I think that you can do better ;)

Let’s review!!

6 Hour Energy Drink
Wow. I love this level. Like, I’m not kidding. There’s just something about it. The layout is so simple and boring, but I just love the way this level plays. The tileset is used wonderfully, the level looks absolutely gorgeous. Really, this level is fairly small, but at the same time it’s not cramped, and you could have a decent chase in it. There are soda cans placed around for you to get a sugar rush on, or in this level’s case, energy drinks. Very clever. I like this level a lot. Gave me a really good first impression of the level pack.

Darker Remains
This level’s okay. I guess maybe I just had higher expectations because I liked the first level so much. Anyway though, I enjoyed this level. The layout’s nice, and there’s plenty of room in this level to fit a bunch of players in. I defiinitely give Dark Sonic props for using this tileset. It’s really, really hard to use. Overall the level is pretty, but some of the places look really, well, ugly. I dunno. This one tile is used in a lot of places that just doesn’t work at all. Look around 85, 15. That tile’s just really overdone. Overall, this level’s good, but nothing I’d host.

Scrap Brain
This level’s really great. The tileset is used really well, the level looks really pretty. But that’s not why it’s great! The layout is just awesome. Like, I dunno. Again, it’s nothing special. It’s just a basic layout. But it’s just done really well. There are a million and one places where you can suddenly stop short, change your path, and confuse your enemy who was chasing you. You can jump into a few walls to grab carrots, cut a jump short and climb down some wires, or just, like, I dunno. This level’s just really good. I’d love to have a duel here, I think it’d be really fun. The downfall of this level is the music. If you know me, you’ll know that I absolutely hate the Sluggion theme. I think one time I attempted to rate a level lower than it should’ve been because they used the Sluggion song, but I’ll let you off and just mute the music if I play this level online.

Mixxed Up
I dunno if we have two different versions of the tileset with different masking, or this level just wasn’t tested properly, but when I was trying to test this, I kept falling off the bottom of the level. I dunno. This level is nice and all, it’s pretty, but you fall off the bottom of the level, and that’s never a good thing. I’ll cut my review short on this one because obviously something’s going on here.

Unreal Surreality
I dunno, I really don’t like this level. It’s too cramped up, the eyecandy is confusing, and the layout is boring and symmetrical. I mean it’s not a terrible level but I just really don’t like it. I don’t think you could have a decent game in this level. The base placement is clever, but not pulled off too well, it’s just annoying. It’s too hard to get around the level. I don’t mean to bash it, but I just can’t find anything I enjoy about this level.

Colorful Compact
Another level I just can’t really bring myself to like. This one’s better, but I didn’t enjoy it. The layout seems very confusing, and the eyecandy, although it appears a lot of time was put into it, is just very ugly, to be honest. This level flows okay, but I really don’t like the layout all that much.

Street Pass no. 3
I’m not at all familiar with this gametype. In fact, I couldn’t figure out what the heck to do in this level, so it’s hard to write much about it. I dunno. Again, a very hard tileset was used so I give a lot of props for that, and the level looks really pretty. I particularly enjoyed the flow here a lot. Everything seems to go together nicely. I’ll cut the review there, though, since I have no idea with Flag Run is.

Overall, I enjoyed the battle levels that Dark Sonic made for this pack, but the CTF levels were very disappointing. I’d reccomend this for download.

Alike New Ages had it volume 3 recently, also Impressions-series continues on with a third level pack. The pack here is a bit smaller though, as well it is more focused on battle-levels. As the title says, there has been some sort of Evolution.

The pack kicks off with ’6 Hour Energy Drink’, a rather small and solid battle-level with it’s neat looks. DarkSonic has been creative to keep you interested to play here. ‘Energy Drinks’ that in the end will make you rush at your opponents. Flow seems good, as well the rest of the pickups. The layout though isn’t anything special and the level itself would be just another random level using this tileset if it wasn’t this solid, and if the background wasn’t as innovative.

‘Darker Remains’ is pretty good use of the fresh Castle-set by Blade. That one is probably the better battle-levels out there, cause it’s excellent visuality and limited enough gameplay. Positions for Pickups is suitable in overall as well.

In ‘Scrap Brain’, the thing is to use your brain. It is mostly about controlling the two MCE-carrots at the top-level, as there are PowerUps placed very close to them. The level is somewhat different compared to the previous level by DS using this tileset, ‘Panic!!!’. Still, the eyecandy is what makes this remind me about it.

‘Mixxed Up’ seems to be relative to ’6 Hour Energy Drink’ with it’s name. Using also a new, fresh, Waste Treatment Facility-tileset by Cooba, it goes far to the better side of battle-levels, because it’s nice eyecandy and more tactical layout. The level utilises pits. Just too bad they are only few. Pickups are where they should be, and I don’t see ice useless either, despite the pits aren’t that risky.

My favourite level in the pack is ‘Unreal Surreality’-CTF, that is very unconventional. You could imagine the top-area is the warground mainly here, and below are pits, but instead the bottom-area is what makes this so abnormal. The bottom-area is where the only PowerUps lie, and is also the fastest route to travel between the narrow bases with flying-ability. That way the gameplay is well spread around the space here. I would probably know a better name for this level, but guess I’ll save it for one of my own.

‘Colourful Compact’ is a more default CTF-level. The PowerUps are placed somewhat unwise, and I was already looking for some variety instead of the very usual Bouncer and Toaster. I’m not either sure if two minor carrots fit here. Eyecandy is colourful, only barely not too colourful to confuse your eyes. Unfortunately this one seems to be the worst level in the pack, not by a lot, but still.

What I was most interested about in this pack at first, was the Street Pass No. 3, using the new FlagRun-gametype, and fairly new Desolation-tileset both by BlurredD. After fixing the few minor glitches here, the level seems to work fine, probably in practical use as well. It is going to be sort of crowded here in big JDC-events for example, so I guess this suits 2vs2/3vs3 FR more. The flag-spot could be less campable though, and bad is that this level is just too much like all other flagrun-levels. I can’t either find any “street” here.

Yet another VIP (Very Important Pack) from this month, or something…Alike NA III, also Impressions 3 has gone through improving, just not as much as it could. Download the pack and have a try of each level. It might be after all more like taste with the Energy-drink concepts and all, but I’d say not all the levels here are evenly decent. All work out though, and definitely ‘Unreal Surreality’ is the big diamond of the pack that raises the pack’s worth even more. I would say this month is one of the greatest with that result of upload quantity-quality comparison. I believe this is promising for the whole year, and upcoming Anniversary Bash 10 as well. DS is one another we can thank for that.

Panic!!!

Flow and stuff
The level flows nicely – without making it ridiculously easy to move around. There are most often several ways to take, which I see as important in a battle level. I also find the level to be of a rather nice size.

Ammunition and powerups
In the top left corner, you can find a seeker-powerup. Looks like a fun campspot to me, and for that reason, it’s nice to be able to get 50 seekers by kicking it. We all know how addicting camping a seeker powerup can be <3.. atleast this one isn’t by a warp target.

In the bottom left corner, there’s an RF powerup, which you have to stomp, and while trying to get a hold of this weapon, you’re an easy target for any attack. Good, interesting area.

In the top right corner, there’s a toaster powerup, which you, too, can kick. It’s in a rather spacious area where I can imagine myself and my opponent hunting eachother around. Good job.

It’s obvious that DarkSonic placed his powerups with thought, intending to make sure the whole level comes to use in the games played in it.

Regarding the amount of pickups; there’s a nice amount of them. Enough not to render you compeltely helpless when you don’t have any powerup, for example after dying – but not so much that you don’t feel a need to get powerups in order to stand a chance.

Carrots
This level has one carrot, unless I missed some :o And it only gives one heart. This isn’t necessarily bad, and it certainly doesn’t make for any unfairness… It’s just that this means that this level maybe isn’t the best level to duel someone if you want to try to get a perfect score. If you go to the carrot while being hunted, you will die, unless you play with a version of carrotade which makes you invincible for a while after taking it. Caution, thus!!!

Rating
Never rated a battle level before… I’ll think about it.

Exciting scenery

lol why does the grass kill me hehe :P :P

(No, really, I can’t be bothered to review two battle levels… but it’s definitely worth playing, if you’re into battle. Both his levels are definitely good Battle server material, or bash material.)

Innovation

Flow
Blablabla, the level flows nicely etc etc. This is a DarkSonic level, the flow is good by default. Some areas are spacious, others are not – more about that later. There are warps that take you from bottom to top, of those can be made good use when fleeing, unless you get a warpkill. :* In all, I like the level in this aspect. Learning to find my way around in the level wasn’t hard. That’s a good thing^^

Ammunition and powerups
There is one powerup placed close to the start positions and base of each team. By the blue one, there is a bouncer power up, and by the red a toaster. I’ll come back to those under Base areas.

The third and last powerup is one of seekers. It’s located in the center of the level, and you can only reach it with the copter ears, that you take low below, under the carrot. Taking the seek powerup is complicated by springs. I know from playing this level that hitting people that are trying to take it is evil fun. Needing to take a risk to get hold of such a good weapon is a nice element in a level, in my opinion. It also takes a fair amount of time to do it, which adds even more action to a CTF game, for example when you urgently need to get ready.

There is a nice amount of pickups. The level is designed so that all ammo kinds can come into use. In the more “closed” areas, you can make good use of seekers and bouncer, while the RFs (and to some degree bouncers) become effective when you are hunting in the more open areas. And Grytolle saw that this was good.

Carrots
There are three carrots. Two one heart carrots (to the sides), and one full energy (central placement).

The one heart carrots are place in two one-helluva-tubes (which made me laugh so hard the first time I saw it). As fun of a gimmick this is, this means that people that follow you to the tube start can turn around, run to the end of it and start camping for a fun kill :-D Nice-nice.

The fullNRG can be reached either by RFclimbing (which seems plainly stupid considering the spawntime of the copterears) or by copterears. Taking the carrot takes concentration, which is fun. Yet another risk you need to take. And while you’re at it, someone might follow you and spam you with seekers, or you get shot through the walls by electroblasters. And if that wasn’t enough of a risk, someone might be camping above it. There is a carrot close to it, however – but there’s no guarantee that nobody won’t kill you trying to take that! Yes, I like this area a lot.

Base areas
The bases are located in the bottom corners, and as the level is symmetrical I can save time by mostly discussing just one of them o/.

It’s not easy, but not impossible to stay RTS or R at them – there’s no “safe spots”, atleast not really close to them. As long as you have seekers, you’re relatively safe to attacks… but there is a (hopefully intended) lack of seekers around the bases, which unables you to do this forever. Escaping upwards with bouncers works though, which there is ammo for in the actual base area. There are one powerup close to each base. They don’t pose an unfairness, being different, but they do force you to adjust the way you play. The bases are designed so that both of them can be useful when holding a defensive position of any kind. The areas are rather spacious, which is good for the sake of dodging, but there’s also a tighter passage towards the center of the level, which is nice if you have ammo better suited for that. It doesn’t take long to get to the carrots, but long enough to make you miss scoring chances. This, too is good \o/

Rating
I really have problems rating individual levels today, but let me say like this: I like it, and it seems to really be worth playing.

Panic!!!
This level owns. It owns so much that I attempted to make a “tactical map” or something over it. White arrows are warps. Circles and squares are spawn positions and bases.

Eyecandy
This headline is online here because I really like the eyecandy/tileset!

Rooms!

This level fails. The colors hurt my eyes, the bases are frustrating. It simply doesn’t live up to your standards DS :( It’s nice of course, but not worth playing. Maybe if the bases were less “wtf” and a better tileset was used. It does feature nice elements though, like the camping friendly seeker area. The general flow is very nice too. The problem is that base areas really matter in CTF. Better luck next time :-)

CTF LEVELS

I N N O V A T I O N

ABOUT
Innovation is the first CTF level in Impressions Z. It’s a not so wide but high level using Wisetyness. It’s also symmetrical.

MUSIC
The music simply fits. It may not have quality like A. Brandon’s, Necros’ or Awesome’s songs, but it certainly isn’t bad. You know, it’s important for it to fit. And it does. (hoo-hah)

EYECANDY
Eyecandy’s good. Layer 7 has a faraway, pretty weird (but good) hill thing that for me looks like someone with some weapon of mass destruction. Layer 6 has hi-tech platforms. They look good. It’s also good that the textured background doesn’t have stars – it gives a cloudy feeling. However on the top of the level, near the column with suckertubes, it’s bright. So what – the sun or whatever other light source can shine through clouds, and it’s natural-ish, besides there are torches there. Also, the leaves in the center of the level remind me of a face. hahaha

GAMEPLAY
Nice, of course. Good ammo placement. Flow’s good too. Same about base placement. And what’s so fun about this level? Well, it would be a bit boring if it wasn’t for the long and fast suckertubes! They make travelling easier. I quote:

I present to you: one HELLUVA tube.

Anyway, to sum up, it’s good.

OVERALL – Very good.

The second CTF level in Impressions Z. Unlike Innovation, it is unsymmetrical. It uses the first Jungrock tileset from the unfinished Impressive Flashback.

MUSIC
And I thought techno-ish tracks wouldn’t fit in a jungleish level! (I’m not counting Luigi Elettrico’s JungTec) But. It. Fits.

EYECANDY
Very nice! There’s variation in ground tiles, and that’s good. A lot of waterfalls there! There’s also your typical bay with hills, and in layer 6 a block of leaves with nine windows. Looks good. You can actually see the bay and the texbg clouds floating around near pos 50,20. Other places are usually filled with cave tiles and waterfalls. Overall eyecandy’s very nice.

GAMEPLAY
Also nice. Flow, ammo placement, base placement good, BUT! There is one warp that is much closer to the red base than the warp near the two arrows is to the blue base. Or at least I haven’t found a closer warp :P

OVERALL – Very good.

ABOUT
The third CTF level in Impressions Z. Also unsymmetrical. It uses Impressive Creations’ IC-IF Pezrox1.

MUSIC
I won’t rate this one because I suggested it :) But a side note, I always thought Crystal Cages would fit Pezrock.

EYECANDY
Ah, eyecandy. We have one layer of faraway palms and two heavily used supporting the sprite layer. It looks very nice! Fun tidbits:

- spikes used as thorns on grass (at least it looks like that to me)

- bushes made from palm leaves

- bg hills used as mud-like piles

Also the level is very colorful. Also, there is variation in the ground tiles (but not as much as in Botanizer).

GAMEPLAY
Duh, very good. All your typical aspects (ammo placement, flow, base placement) are good. And there is one interesting thing – you must buttstomp to grab the flag because of the float up events. Almost everyone says that this thing should be removed, but I think that it makes the level more original.

OVERALL – Very good.
SIDE NOTESIMO this wouldn’t look as good as now in Pezrock 2.

BATTLE LEVELS

P A N I C ! !

ABOUT
The first Battle level in Impressions Z. It uses the second Letni tileset from the unfinished Impressive Flashback.

MUSIC
It uses Electricdrug, a MOD music file I didn’t hear before. Fits well, but is a little bit too happy for the title (I rather imagined Panic!! using Purple Motion’s Panic [probably the second version].) and as a side note has nice drums and sounds like something you would hear in that fun but forgotten KD Labs’ game Spanking/Moonshine Runners, except the tracks from that game overuse trumpets and saxophones. Enough about the music.

EYECANDY
Panic!!’s eyecandy is sweet, like in all levels in this pack. Now let’s look closer. On layer 7 we have a column, and on layer 6 a chip wall with a few holes. Layer 5 is a sprite layer supporting layer and we have some nice stuff on it, like translucent static screens, other chip walls, or walls made from the same tiles that are on the column in layer 7 (BTW it is from Tubelectric), except the layer 7 column uses lighter tiles. Other than that, we have layer 3 loaded full of stuff and layer 2, but there are only 5 tiles placed on layer 2. Anyway, sweet.

GAMEPLAY
I’ll just say good. Because I don’t see anything that is bad.

OVERALL – Very good.
SIDE NOTES – I guess this is somewhere on Carrotus/Earth/whatever because of the fade color.

ABOUT
And here we have the second Battle level in Impressions Z. It is not only the last battle level, but also the last level in the pack and the last one that I will review (:P). It uses Gus’ Big Landscape (the normal version, not 2 [the sunset one] or 3 [the night one]).

MUSIC
Exciting Scenery uses Alexander Brandon’s Carrotus Forest. It’s the same track as in Significant. Fits!

EYECANDY
WOOOOOO! Now this is the most impressive eyecandy in the whole pack! Exciting Scenery really deserves its title – it uses various kinds of blocks, from snowy mountains and windows to other variations of the texture background to look really good. In layer 7 there is a wall with a hole and in layer 6 there is some kind of a building. Overall – eyecandy is really awesome!

GAMEPLAY
Of course, Exciting Scenery’s gameplay is good too. Nice flow and ammo placement, and it also uses pits. So, again: it’s good.

OVERALL – Very good, AWESOME eyecandy.

So, now I end my review of DarkSonic’s Impressions Z. It’s a great pack – 3 sweet CTF levels for a Capture The Flag maniac and 2 Battles for a roaster. I’m going to rate it pretty high – here, DarkSonic. Take this 8.5.
