I’m just going to take my review from my newspost and put it here.
The first custom JJ1 level ever released is finally here. Violet CLM’s Escape from Nippius starts you out in a room with several other green rabbits with big guns. There are some extremely original things in this level. I’ve never seen anything like some of this. Walls that shoot blaster shots at you, birds that fly freely for eyecandy, teleporters, and more inhabit this level. There’s even a custom end boss, more specifically a snowman with jumping capabilities.
The gameplay plays a lot like the default JJ1 levels, so there aren’t too many problems here. The eyecandy is very nice as well. There are some very clever things done with it. I especially enjoyed the translucency effect with the ice crystals.
My only complaint with this level is that I would’ve liked if it were a little bit longer. I highly recommend this level to anyone with JJ1 whose looking for a new level to play. It’s well worth the download. I want to warn you, though, this level is extremely difficult. It might even be a little bit harder than Orbitus 2, or Raneforus 2. In any case, that’s the way JJ1 levels should be. The harder the better.

Caveat emptor: I’ve never been a very good reviewer of Jazz 1 conversions, mostly because I’ve failed to be a good little Jazz Jackrabbit fan and actually bother to get and play the game. Unfair as it may be, the following review is entirely based on its merits as a Jazz 2 tileset, not how well converted it was. Although, really, this is a moot point: a rushed Violet conversion is still an excellent conversion.
As JJ1 tilesets go, “Pezrox” was among the weirdest. It’s literally, as suggested, seemingly made of the chalky American Pez candy. However, there are also many odd-colored yellow and green bricks that contrast with the level as a whole. This isn’t a bad thing at all, and actually comes off looking much better than it does when I describe it here.
As for the tileset itself, there is no possible easy way to describe it. It’s some odd world with a lava background and bricks. I can’t imagine what theoretical situation this would follow, so let’s just file it in the “mystical lands” area. In any case, considering the monotonousness of previous JJ1 conversions which lacked sufficient eyecandy to make anything more than a decent-looking utilitarian level (cough, Security Breach, cough), Pezrox has enough colors and trinkets to keep even the biggest eyecandy-obsessive interested. All of the eyecandy looks in the tileset as if it would clash awfully, but you quickly see (as in the excellent demo level) that this is not at all the truth.
I am somewhat concerned about the masking. If you look in JCS, it appears to be fairly easy to get stuck if one tries. However, in play, I never got stuck accidentally. The diagonal tiles also appeared to have jaggies that were rounded off into wave shapes. This is not a major complaint, but if you really pay attention while playing the demo level, you can tell this is the case. Still, there is obviously not much that can be done about this.
This tileset lends itself well to both single player and multiplayer ventures, although it has all the little “cool items” that are required to make an excellent single player level and that should be taken advantage (although it lacks spikes, there is some sort of metallic wheel that could be used instead.)
I hate – hate – to give another 8+ rating to a JJ1 conversion, but they just need to stop being excellent like this one is. Another disappointingly excellent conversion from Violet, and another disappointingly – um – existent – download recommendation.
OMG!! SOmebody made a JJ1 level! Maybe I’ll plug this later.
PHT, we do not care.
While trying to got this level to work was effort, I ran it and surviving was even higher effort.
This level is very hard. Consists of lot of evil traps, well placed enemies, and a SCE or whatever from Blaster gun. In most places, damage was unavoidable due to that.
Still, this level doesn’t feature too much eyecandy, but it still looked nice. No tilebugs. The last part, which resembled Crysilis as well, was evilest, and most pretty.
The endboss was jumping snowman, with a blaster SCE nearby, and collapsing scenery which tooks 2 LIVES when you fall down. Evil fun.
I’m not gonna to rate it high because it is first custom JJ1 level, but because it’s well done, and has lot of 1337 stuff. Download heavily recommended.
Can ya make a jj2 version? Don’t have JJ1 :(
Cooba, I don’t care if you care as I asked Violet and NOT YOU! I don’t need comments like that if I not even thought on you while typing. Next time, shut up or say something nicer.[This review has been edited by PHT]
Yay! i cant think of a cooler level (dont have time for a review)!
Eyecandy Possibilities:
My Rating: 8.0
Comments:
This tileset seems to have hardly anything for the background but some to put on the sprite and the foreground, but that seems to be what JJ1 has so i’m fine with it.
Animations:
My Rating: 10.0
Comments:
There are enough good, accurate animations and extra tiles as animations, like destruct scenery, but why no trigger scenery or buttstomp scenery blocks. Oh well.
Masking:
My Rating: 9.7
Comments:
The masking is great, but the windows or the invisible masks are a bit confusing but oh well, i could get used to it. And i can live with it too, i think…
Usability:
My Rating: 10.0
Comments:
The tileset is not too hard to use but it can get boring after a long time but that is if you make a level like 400 × 100.
vJJ1 to vJJ2:
My rating: 10.0
Comments:
There are some extra tiles which look really cool, and the graphics for this conversion seems to be more better. No tiles are missing, apart from that, this rules!
Overall:
My Average Rating: 9.54~9.5
Build with: Yes
Download: Yes
Wow, for a set with 200 tiles, Violet did an awesome job. The tileset is just awesome, the eyecandy you can make with it is awesome the houses are pretty awesome, the quicksand rux. The only thing is Violet couldnt fit in a bg, so it had to be a black tile, oh well. I absolutely love the sand waterfalls and the quicksand, as well as the sandstorm and rain in the foreground. There is even backround eyecandy, signs, vines, destruct blocks etc. An amazing peice of work, shows what you could fit in 200 tiles. I hope, in the future, you will consider making an expanded version of this set, since right now, it definately scores high from me.
Tiles Included (keeping in mind the 200 tile limit): 8.8
Important tiles: 7.5
Masking: 8
Color: 8
Animations (keeping in mind the 200 tile limit): 8.2
Overall (not an average): 7.5
Final rating: 8 (exactly). Definately a good tileset and definately a download reccomendation, and sorry for the short review.
Ok here is my review.
Eyecandy: The eyecandy of this tileset is awesome! There is tons of eyecandy in this tileset. I really like the green hills and the three blocks you can shoot and buttstomp.
Graphics Quality:
The grapahics quality is pretty good. The graphics of this tileset are awesome! Make more tilesets with this quality of graphics.
Example Level:
The example level is really good. It shows all the stuff you can use in this tileset really well. I like how the sand and rain come at different times it makes it look more realistic.
Music: The music was an excellent choice! I think it fits the level very well. The name of the music also fits the name of the tileset.
Conclusion: This tileset is the best tileset I’ve seen. Wow! Make more tilesets like this Violet CLM.
Overall: I give this an 8.0.
Download Reccomendation; Yes! Everyone should download this. I hope to see people make good levels with this tileset.

Cooba, Spazie: No, the quicksand is not ripped from JJ1. I can easily create hundreds of duplicate tiles in no time at all, if you’d like me to prove that. Few things are more simple than drawing that tile. Your confusion may be due to the fact that I used palette swapping for animation, like in JJ1.
Moonblaze: YES! I forgot a SUN! I ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! …the textured background colors are the sunset itself, though.
PHT: The example level is a race level. Races have ice ammo and no enemies. Ask anyone except maybe Bjarni.
I really like this tileset, you did a good job with it. A nice variety of tiles, lots of different colours, the texture is sweet and enough background layer eyecandy to prevent it all from looking boring. Don’t see any problems in the mask either.
Nice drawing style too, I can see some sweet levelmaking potential here. Good luck to you in the contest, personally I think you did a better job than me.
Note that Quicksand is ripped from JJ1.
PHT : Bjarni, is NOT autistic, after all. Also, this article is JelZe’s, not JSZ Jazz’s.[This review has been edited by Cooba]
I agree with Moonblaze, I don’t think this is a 9.7
We’ll see, here’s my review.
TILESET
When I was looking on the set the first time in the example level I thought ‘Wow! This tileset looks great!’
But when I tried to make a level with it I fastly noticed that there just wheren’t the tiles I needed.
Spazie sais: ‘You included all the needed tiles, hooks blabla…’
All needed tiles?
There’s a txt sign but only for one background, I would’ve needed a text sign for the stones. Also I miss some platforms with thin masking, but not too thin for a puzzle. I tried the cactus tiles, but they don’t work for it.
Also, what Moonblaze said, the background looks weird, the sand is lighter than the sprite layer ground, the clouds don’t look like clouds.
What I like is the foreground. The sandstorm and the rain looks cool. But what is good foreground without good background? Nope!
The houses for layer 4 are ok, though they remind me a bit on one of Blades tilesets. However, the whole tileset reminds me on one of Blades tilesets :P
Well, to say something good (don’t wanna see Violet crying :P) the ground looks good (tough, darker than the bg sand) and I like the quicksand.
SCORE: 6.5 out of 10
LEVEL
The example level isn’t bad, tough I don’t understand why there’s all those regenerating ice ammo. The level doesn’t have enemies, but shows well how to use the tileset. I really like how Violet did the Quicksand, and I didn’t knew that you can use sucker tube speed 0 (I thought 1 is the lowest).
SCORE: 4.0 out of 5
MUSIC
I really like the music Violet found, it fits perfectly.
SCORE: 5.0 out of 5
CONCLUSION
So, I hope these are enough reasons why this tileset doesn’t deserve 9.7 (Beware!). Don’t get mad please, I know you can do it, Violet. You have the ability to make very good sets (and not many people have that ability). Your next tileset will be better I think :D
FINAL SCORE: 6.7
See ya, PHT
EDIT: lol, Spazie started with rating it 9.7, now it’s 8.2 lol!
@ Cooba: Even if it’s ripped from JJ1, does it matter? No! (in my opinion)
@ Violet: It is a race level? OH! sorry :D I didn’t knew that :P
Rating raised to 7 because I’m dumb :P
Oh, and another note to Violet, please don’t mind Bjarni, it isn’t his fault (read JSZ Jazz’ article about autism)[This review has been edited by PHT]
Holy pancakes. I was expecting more for a 9.7 tileset.
Funny enough, if this is supposed to be a sunset then why is there no sun? The absent of a sunset in the tileset colors is quite sad, in fact the clouds rather look like floating rocks and the cactus rather looks like spiked jelly. Sorry.
Speaking of sand, I think the ground is supposed to be sand? Or is it dirt? I can’t tell, it’s too blurry to see. Being an artist, I find it strange that the background sand is lighter than the walkable sand, which made my level look quite confusion. Peharps it is a reversed world? Who knows.
The tileset is decent. It is not worth to consider over Agama’s Egypt tileset because some of the unique details Violet CLM tried to draw are rather messed, the snake looks more like a rope of rotten bananas than it looks like a snake. If it had border lines and possibly been a bit animated it would’ve been cooler. I only suggest you download this if you feel like create a world of confusion with jelly plants and floating rocks.[This review has been edited by Moonblaze]
Cool!
Image quality
This is really good, especially the ground tiles and the Quicksand/fountains with sand. Although the clouds look a little strange. They look alittle like stones. But if they are stones then don’t mind me.
1.7/2.5
Basic Tiles
You included almost all the needed tiles, hooks, vines, poles and blocks, but you do miss some of the weapon blocks.
1.7/2.0
Animations
This tileset has animations. Quicksand and Fountains. They all look great. The dust storm looks a little strange.
1.5/2.0
Tiles
You can use the same tiles, yet it doesn’t become boring. They are of high quality. The stones are really good, and you can make any shape with them. You also have poles with stuff on them, likes a snake and stones. You included Exit signs. Furthermore you have some decorations (Snakes and stones..)
2.5/2.5
Easy to use
This is quite easy to use. The tileset is small, so you can quickly find the tiles you need. I think that newbies can make quite good levels with this cool tileset.
1.0/1.0
Example Level
You have used all the tiles in your level! Really great! You have shown what we can do with it, and what for effects you can make. The background is used well.
The tileset gets an 8.5!
This is really great. Making levels with it is quite easy.
The level gets an 10, just because it shows everything you can do with the tileset!
^^

Sorry I Can’t See The Latest Level That Give On An Error
