Review time ;D (I haven’t reviewed in forever)

Okay, let’s start off seeing how this compares to what its remixing (Xmas1). Listening through it, all the patterns from the original are in the remix (and all have been made to sound better), and LRK has also expanded the song with more good sounding patterns to make it play even longer. In conclusion, he stuck pretty close to the original melody of the song and you can find what patterns are where pretty easily.

As for how the song plays, it plays really well. The instruments go together well and make the song a pleasure to listen to, even if you didn’t like the original Xmas1. Percussion sounds really nice, and guitar is great too.

Finally, you can tell this is a quality song when you look at it (in ModTracker, for example). LRK made this very well and didn’t just stick in random notes in places, and it shows. It’s a very good remix, and definately deserves a download and a few listens. Great job on creating an awesome tune!

First glance: Another remix by Lark. Don’t see many of these too often. But this mix, just around holiday time, makes a great addition to your holiday mix CD.

Tempo/beat: Very well done. Kept faithful to the original song, while adding it’s own charm and even a new verse. Only part I don’t like is the end, where the jingle bells suggest a higher tempo than the song really is, and it kinda throws me off. 9/10.

Instruments: All high quality samples used wonderfully. If you look at the samples, you’ll see samples like glass breaking and a Chinese cymbal. Very well put together. 9/10.

Overall composition: Excellent. Polish it up and submit this to OCremix, they just might accept it. It’s a damn shame it doesn’t work in JJ2, this would be excellent for a battle level. 9/10.

(9 + 9 + 9) ÷ 3 = 9. Download recommendation twice over.

Advice: Keep on rockin’, Lark. This is excellent. Also, see if you can’t make this JJ2-compatible.

Introduction:
Boredom forged in the facade of re-arranging music spawned this. But how does it stand up to the original pieces? Let’s find out.

Music Analysis:
For the most part, channels were added to each and every Module to give it more echoes, range, and the sort. Some timing and pitch bends were also fiddled with here and there. However, some of the music sounds almost entirely unchanged. . .and some, like the Boss theme, actually sounds worse!(In this particular instance, the Boss theme is hollowed out a little. Quieter.) This is mostly due to what I’ll be samples, however. . .

Sample Analysis:
. . .some of which were changed, not for the better, but for the worse. Samples like hi-hats and some of the other things are of lower quality than the original overall(even if they’re of higher bit-rate). In fact, a couple sound like they came right from the Sound Blaster Live! v5.1 SynthWave SoundBank. However, some of the samples, however, sound quite a bit better than the originals. There’s a few songs where the samples fit all the better.

Final Analysis:
Don’t get me wrong. Some of the songs truly do sound better than their original incarnations. Labratkid obviously tried to do this as best as he could. He wasn’t aiming for remixes. Just slight alterations. . .re-arrangements. . .things like that.(Like that Medivo thing I did a while back.)
I’d say overall, he did an acceptable job, but it’s not quite as nice as it could theoretically be. Maybe try using better samples, or at least different ones. Perhaps don’t rely so heavily on just adding channels and echos. Trying adding in some of that originality we’ve come to expect from you, LaRK. For example, with the sample you chose for the “Jingle Bells” thing in Holidaius, might I suggest pitch-bends instead of just jumping from note-to-note? Also, change the snare drum back to a “machine crash” in Scraparap. . . That song is so nothing without that. Use the one from Final Fantasy VI if you have to. Just change it back.

Recommendation?:
Sure. Why not? Nothing here is damaged or anything. For the most part, it sounds just as good as the originals, and in a lot of cases, slightly better. Exoticus sounds absolutely marvelous with the new xylophone samples, for example. Technoir sounds fairly decent, too.

Okay. This was entertaining for a few minutes.

Gameplay:
Actually tricky at some parts. Mainly because of lack of directions. And It is possible to win before you go throgh the whole thing.
1/10

Placement:
Enemies are in bad posistions. Fish out of water? Not enough of them. No bonus items like berries or soda.
0/10

Eyecandy:
No layers, lack of directios, and the level was not built to look good.
0.5/10 (For the effort)

Originality:
None.

Overall:
0.75/10. But since it is the first, 1/10.

Layout: Layout is kinda basic, nothing really original in it. The level forces you to jump more often instead of using floatups and springs (Which can be good or bad depending on your taste). I dont like the masking of the sucker tubes though, they seem to jut out more than the ground and you crash into them while running. 5,28 could also use a bunch of one ways (right under the red spring). The top passages to the base also force you to go into 1 tile wide sucker tubes, which gets annoying especially if you were chased or rushed or something.
Rating: 7.7

Eyecandy: Kinda basic. Lots of places are left empty without any layer 5. Poles are an interesting way to mimic antennae except that the first few times or so it feels like there is a pole event on them. Otherwise, there doesnt seem to be anything new or eyecatching about eyecandy. Lightning also gets annoying, especially if its in the foreground.
Rating: 7.5

Placement of Stuff: Interesting. 5 powerups. 4 out of the 5 are behind masked tiles, and 2 out of the 5 are only attainable by Electroblasters. 5 pus seems kinda crazy for this level, but the carrot placement gets even better. A full energy in the center and two +1s surrounding it, interesting idea. I’ve tested through the level and found nothing bad about it, and I’ve never seen carrots placed like that before so =D. Ammo is placed nicely enough.
Rating: 8.2

Gameplay/Flow:
Floatups are placed nicely, springs are placed well for the most part. The ground underneath the two red springs at the very side needs one ways. On second thought, why are those springs still there? They seem kind of pointless since the green spring + floatups gets you up to the base itself. As I mentioned before, sucker tubes jut out more than they should. The parts that force you to jump sometimes get on my nerves, but lrk calls them “obstacles” =P.
Rating: 7.5

Overall (Not an average): A good level, but it could use more things to make it stand out. I don’t particularly like the tileset, and the eyecandy could use more work, but the level plays alright except for the few annoying things i mentioned before. This level also seems big enough to handle large amounts of people, meaning it could be hosted in JDC events in the future.
Rating: 7.9

Final Rating: 7.76 ~ 7.8. Download reccomended.

This probably excited me as much as BR’s level. LRK obviously tried making a successful level, and guess what? He did. Anyway, the level is a bit big, consisting of 5 PUs. 4 are different. There are 2 Blaster PUs. Can be a bit campy at middle and loads of ammo. A while ago, it used to just be loads of bouncers and RFs. Now a bit more fair. 3 carrots quite cramped together.

Eyecandy
Rating : 7.7
Comments
Well, not many exciting eyecandy effects but at least the places arent cramped with lack of eyecandy, or too much eyecandy. Anyway, the level is quite normal. All the shadows were dealt with. Loads of tubes and nice buildings, this level almost has the feel of a bit of a city.

Gameplay
Rating : 8.2

It actually is fun to play in. Doesn’t suit duels at all, but anything else + is good. There is good flow, and adequate springs, some tubes are a bit hard to get into, but not if you have a brain. The powerups are moderatly easy to notice and get. There isnt much tactic at all in this level, apart from firing weapons at right times. A few RF chases are good. I cant say much.

Layout
Rating : 8.5
Comments
Well, the layout is pretty solid, and pretty campy. The flagholder has like 2000 ways to never be hit muhahaha, but but but, if you are smart and familiar with the concept of the brain, you should be able to prevent it. Peppermints arent ever used enough, you can chase up slopes with it. Bouncers = Vice versa. Anyway, you can also fire seeks through the tubes or something, double attacking always helps! It’s pretty easy to navigate around here, and it has a city-like layout. Good enough for me.

Placement
Rating : 8.2
Now that LRK editted it, enough toasters to attack with. Before there were one billion bouncers and RFs. And like 6 toasters? Not even at all. Anyway now that it is changed, a bit better. A lot of camping due to the where the PUs are and the ammo is, but I guess that is how LRK planned it. Anyway GJ

The music brings me back to the days when I was still playing DOS games (gotta love Tyrian =P).

As for the tileset I thought it was pretty good, but I didn’t like the hills because they looked a bit too daggy and something you could make in a matter of seconds. But the tileset is easy to use, and has everything you really need for a level. Waterfalls, caves, ruins, it’s really good. As someone said before, it was missing V and H poles but I’ll let that slide.

I give this an 8, and a download recommendation.

This is the beginning of another tileset review.

Grove Shrine is a tileset by Labratkid/LarK of OLC. I downloaded it and after I saw it I immediately made a level with it. This level still wasn’t completely finished when I was writing this review. But now I’ll start with reviewing the tileset and I’ll tell some of my experiences as well.

Possibilities
I looked at the tileset and I immediately liked it. It’s really simple but has everything I’ll need for a level. So I was starting a level with it. I’ve looked in the example level and I saw some tricks with the tileset. I’ve included them in the level as well. The tiles in the tileset are well created. It’s not that bad if you flip them. Some of them are the same when you flip them. It wasn’t so hard to do eye candy. The example level showed alot of the eye candy you can use in the tileset.

Easy to use, or not?
This tileset is fairly easy to use. The platforms to walk on are easily made, and they have 2 different slopes that are perfectly for a good layout in a level. The eye candy in the tileset wasn’t hard for me. Shouldn’t be too hard for others either. Finding the exact tiles for the platforms can be annoying, but I haven’t had alot of problems with it. The tileset fitted perfectly with the idea I had in mind for my level. I think that this tileset is a good one for people who don’t want to use an overused tileset.

Eye candy
To go further about the eye candy, there is enough in my opinion. Some stones and flowers can be placed on the ground. There are also trees, pillars, waterfalls etc. It’s possible to transluce the pillars and waterfalls. There were also unmasked versions of the pillars and other things. The backgrounds are simple. The mountains are easy to place. The sky that should be placed in layer 8 is light blue. All other stuff I didn’t mention was nice.

Masking
There were some invisible tiles in the tileset. Those invisible tiles aren’t very useful, but there are invisible tiles in several tilesets. The masking of alot of tiles is really simple. There are messages in the sky and some of the tiles under it. LRK likes to put them in there, I guess. The other tiles look good enough.

Conclusion
This is a very nice and simple tileset. I like it alot. I don’t make levels with a tileset alot after I just saw it once. But I were just willing to make a level and I had a theme in mind. The level will probably be in a pack, but I will probably ask several other people to beta test. If it’s good enough I might want to upload it. Now back to the tileset, it fits a level based on fruit, and it’s good to use if you just want to make a level based on nature. I recommend anyone who wants to try something original to try this tileset, and do a good job with it.

Download : Yes!
Build with it : like I said, yes.

Danyjel’s articles bring a smile to my face. They’re so wonderfully messed up. No offense or anything, just… hehe…

Ok, now I feel like i’m obligated to do a review. Here goes.

The song starts off with the normal Technoir beginning. At 0:05, the “ARE YOU READY?!” sample from the Tubelectric JJ2 remix plays. It’s kinda dissapointing because it just blurts out, there’s no fade. After that sample, the music just kinda jumps in. No fade or intro, it just begins. At 0:52, the part that makes the Technoir theme my favorite, the “j-j-jackrabbit” sample plays. At first I was psyched to hear it, then after listening again it sounded too low quality. Perhaps Lark could’ve resampled it using his own voice and applying a few effects. However, it’ll have to do since most Technoir remixes i’ve heard (read: one) don’t have the “j-j-jackrabbit” sample in it.

All in all, it’s a good looping remix, just a bit too short in my opinion. 6 out of 10 +.5 because I feel Danyjel underrated a bit. This remix has the honor of staying in my Winamp playlist (\o/). Download recommendation if you liked the original but don’t like it too much as to be attached to the orignal and not accept any devations from the ordinary. Or something. Use in your Technoir level or any level using a tileset with a tech or abstract theme. Sprinkle some on your pizza!
