I’m in kind of a hurry, but I just want to tell this tileset is awesome so here it goes to quick reviews. Good work, keep it up. I just love all the eyecandy possibilities it creates. There. G2G!
Loving the graphical style.
EDIT: Lowered the rating on a retrospective re-evaluation as the tileset has almost no flexibility at all despite having a large number of tiles on offer.
Its a good tileset with a good example level.
Its a very lot of tiles, its one of the best tilesets what I have seen. Im rating it 9.7
Download recommended? YES! Its the good tileset and I wanna to you will download it!
[Review changed to quick review. – cooba]
One of the best tilesets ever.
And i like HELLO KITTY too =D
To make a 1.23 version would be trivial at worst. There are plenty of things that could be cut out without heavily impacting the tileset (such as the varying background colors, mine cart colors, etc.).
However, Gus shouldn’t feel pressured or obligated to make/not make a 1.23 version. It’s all up to him.
EDIT: Now updated with PROPER REVIEW! As follows:
The first thing any prospective downloader is going to see will be the screenshots, and they are bound to notice what really separates this tileset from pretty much every other tileset out there: its style.
It’s a great style. The whole tileset looks very “soft,” almost as if made of clay, and I love the way it looks. I love it.
And the tileset itself? Not at all typical, and very, very well done. The most notable part of this set is actually a single group of tiles: they are, for gameplay purposes, simple slopes, but graphically, they create an impression of depth and distance, allowing levels to look almost 3D.
There are plenty of things in the tileset that scream out “mine,” from the cliffs, to the tunnels in the cave background, to (of course) the mine carts. This tileset deserves extra recognition on the point that its theme holds together really well; there are many tilesets that have no real central theme and fall apart on that point.
The tileset has a great variety of decorative tiles. Moss, chain lifts, broken chain lifts, rocks (destructible ones even), fences – all manner of things, really, and I love it. Again, it deserves to be mentioned. Especially the cabin/storage shed; a great touch.
Tile layout is solid; not exceptionally user-friendly, but it’s not a nightmare to use like Fortress of Forgotten Souls. Nothing really special on that front, so I’m not going to go far into it. The same applies to masking; there might be a few bugs but I didn’t see any.
My only real complaint about this tileset is the gold: it doesn’t look like gold and it doesn’t look good. It looks like honey or something.
Again, at this point: very, very well done. Deserves a very high rating.
OTHER EDIT: I’ve found one considerable bug in the mask since posting this review. Specifically, the outdoor hole tiles (but not the indoor ones) are fully masked, making them pretty useless. I’ve lowered my rating for this, as it’s quite serious, and shows no signs of being fixed.
SUPER MEGA NEW EDIT: Oh, so the bug’s been fixed. So, hey, extra .3 points, yay!
Wow.
I don’t know what to say. Really. You’ve contributed alot to our community, tilesets and levels, and you’ve always kept your special cartoony style that I myself found a bit too “simple” and not that great. I haven’t seen you evolve that much in your tilesets since I first saw your Alton Towers tileset, and then comes this masterpiece.
Wow.
The tileset has this high-quality, Epic Megagames style to it that I feel is unmatched by other tilesets (except maybe Agama’s, though I’m not so sure).
Wow.
There are no real negatives to this tileset in my opinion, I really love and the little details such as the rails, carts, cave entrances/exits and doodads.
Wow.
Easily the tileset that blew me away the most. There is nothing else for me to say.
Yes, I mean “Latest”. This is the beginning of a long series.
Relay on fearofdark: Easy to use? Try the “Tidy” version I’ve just made.
Relay on Gavalant: It’s a huge honor for me to have Gavalant, one of the Elite tileset creators in the website, to give me a high rating. Thank you.
Hi Gus! (maybe, Ciao? xD)
I was wondering, how you had time to making all tihs tilesets and single-player modes :).
I remember your Campaing Mysteries – it was very good level pack with full of puzzles and “mysteries”.
Also, why I’m asking about that?
Because you have your own style od graphic. Now, in Casualty Mines I see, that your style is geting mature and mature. What’s more, there are many fantastic layers, good color palete, and also your “world of stone, lava and wagons” had good atmosfere. I like your “gus people”. I don’t know, how I can call them xD. I think, that I like your style, because you made thousands of similar things. This is not disatventage! Some of world famous artist were drawing without variety in technic. They were beautiful, because their works were having their names. This is like in CraccoBoy old levels. All his thinks were nice, because he was characteristic with non-convential ideas :). I would be waiting for the compilation of “Gus world”. Try to make one-big-level (minimum 80 kb).
What’s more, this is one of the best mine tileset in jazz2online i ever seen. Why? Because there is many good eycandy like houses or funny trees in background. Yeeeees… your background is perfect :). I think about from-the-blue-to-color-of-background. It looks professional. rocks also rulez.
I give you 10.0, because this tileset shows, how much you done from your start with jazz to this tileset. Try to make another one :). But, if it’s your last tileset, I must tell you, that you are abonding us with nice class.
Good luck!
Don’t listen to the people, don’t make a TSF version.
Everyone else – want to use this tileset? Get over yourself and download TSF already.
Very well done. This is an excellent looking tileset with many creative possibilities and features. The floor tiles particularily are excellently made (particularily ramps), there are many features, such as water, lava, honey??(or whatever that yellow stuff is) and some buildings. There are even some characters for a possible story as well. It’s also very easy to use compared to many other tilesets. One of the most artistic tilesets so far of the year, as far as I can recall.
I think, however, that it could be improved in several ways. As Evilmike said, the lava/water tiles could hold more opportunities, and the tileset is missing some decent spike tiles. The tileset is also missing some decent destructive blocks and poles. As several other reviewers have mentioned, this could easily be made into a 1.23 tileset, and there could also be a night version, or other versions of the tileset. I also don’t like the masking for the ladder tiles, seeing as you have to walk into the wall to climb them.
FINAL RATING: 8.8
DOWNLOAD?: Most certainly yes. It could be improved still, but this is most certainly a must download for anyone looking for a decent, canyon/mine style tileset, or just anyone looking for a decent download in general.
This is a very good tileset and one of the best ones I’ve seen in quite a while. I love the style, and I was quite surprised at just how good it was. It’s a definite improvement over your previous tilesets, which had a bit too much of a “paint shop pro” look to them. This one on the other hand, has a very unique and professional look to it. There’s really no fault I can see in it, other than maybe the grass, which is a bit too bright green, like it’s toxic or something. Also, there aren’t really any good “spike” tiles: there are tiles for lava pools, but that’s a bit limited in how it can be used.
I hope by “My last creation.” you mean it’s your latest creation. It would be a shame for such a great tileset like this to be the last one!
One thing that would be nice is a 1.23 version, like dodges suggested. You’d have to cut stuff, but it’s been done before.
I’m giving this a 10 because even though it’s not perfect, it’s close enough. And I love the art style.
I really love the looks of this tileset, but you really should make it 1.23. Perhaps cut out some NPC tiles or anything you consider to be double. I would definitely use this. I love the cartoony look and the quality of the art.
Also, looking at the huge variety in coloured liquid puddles… maybe you can make multiple versions, each using another colour liquid and/or colour setting. Just an idea.
I liked it very much and it’s worth downloading and using for levels
[When I say Quick Review, I mean QUICK REVIEW. Review changed for the third time, edit again, you get a warning ~cooba]
I liked it but… Ischa, If you get stuck there are more than 1 way to get out(other than jjk)
If you get stuck try using jjfly and jjnowall
I really enjoyed this episode. It’s short, and simple, but it features good level design and it’s fun overall.
The train levels are obviously inspried by the level Devan Express, which blurredd made several years ago. This isn’t such a bad thing, because that was a very good level. The levels here are different enough, anyway, since the train featured is quite a lot taller.
I thought the third level in the pack was lazy, though. It’s just a large empty space with wind, an airboard, and a whole lot of float lizards. Gameplay-wise this level was actually not all that bad, since it posed an interesting challenge, but in terms of level design it’s pretty bad. Luckily, this level is very short and didn’t detract too much from my overall opinion of the episode.
I’m giving this a 7.5. I would have given it an 8, but the laziness of the third level is a bit of a downside.
Well, lets see….
Gameplay
The first level starts with rectangle shaped area’s connected with vines. If you jump down from those vines or walk to the left end of the level you fall down and get warped in a dark place where you can only fall and nothing rests you than to press JJK. When you survived the vines you will find yourself in a dilemma with crates, If you don’t watch out destroying one, you can get yourself locked up and then you will have to cheat again to survive. Sooner than you would expect, this level has been finished. Then you go to the second level. You have to just jump yourself up for one minute and then that level is also over. In the third level you get a parachute which is actually a hover board. I never knew parachutes can get you higher. In this level you just have to avoid or destory some flying lizards for a few moments and then you reach the end of the level. In the last level you face a boss while still on your ‘parachute’ in a level that gives you no (dis)advantages, so just a platform where you walk on actually, but there is no need for walking anyway, as you are on your ‘parachute’. Please fix the bugs in the first level. The first level is probably the best of these four. That its the best says something about this pack, as there are still mistakes in it. Next time test your levels better before you upload them.
Eyecandy
In the first level I got confused because of the ‘railroad track’ thats in the foreground. It took me half a minute to orientate and find out where I was standing on aswell as where I could stand on. The railroad track is on the foreground, which wouldn’t be that bad if you still placed tiles in layer four which would let you stand on the railroad track, now you can just hang on and go through it. The second level is ok, but I think it’s too dark and I would have rather seen some more light in this level. I will not review the eyecandy of the third and fourth level as these levels feature too little of it.
Originalty
Having levels on a railroad track is quite original, but you should have executed it way better. In the first level there is supposed to be a train, but I don’t really see it, you should have made it more clearly. Also the story is too weak. You should at least have made a bit of text at the beginning of the first level. Also the main bad guy is Devan Shell again. I consider this one of the weaker single player packs starring Devan as a bad guy as you don’t even get to see him or his plan. This story needs improvement, more confrontation with the main character and more excitement.
Gameplay: 4
Eyecandy: 5.2 (5+)
Originality: 4.8 (5-)
Final Grade: 4.7
This was a very cool little set of levels. The first is a tad annoying, because some crates can trap you and force you to die without much warning. But after a few frustrating tries, its a cool level. The eyecandy is very good, and this continues throughout all the levels. The second level takes some imagination because everything falls at exactly the same speed, which looks a bit funny, but it works well. The ending of this level is very cool. It took a bit longer than I expected, and thought maybe I was doing something wrong at first, and the when I did get the end text at first, I fell back to the start, which also prevented the game from sending me to the next level. However, if you listen to the text through the level, and make sure that you fall onto a box when you get the end text, you will get to the finish. The third level is based on an interesting concept, and works well since you can’t shoot and fly upwards at the same time. However, the enemies are practically invincible because float lizards which fall will respawn as flying lizards if they get too far from Jazz, which can be a bit frustrating. The last level is a boss level, and is very cool because you are on an airboard. The music is also a cool bonus. I would definitely suggest downloading.
Heh, fun to see how much these look like your tileset. Surely a consistent style.
