Thanks mate, i was trying to think of what other objects are effected by the palette colours that arn’t the normal jj2 colours. I’ll add those in the next version ( btw u can simply edit the pcx image and put some other stuff in there ). I’ll try to make compatability for other pal files but its not easy. I’m reading from bytes and stuff so i don’t know how to detect different pal types. Paint Shop Pro 7 is a simple text file…wish microsoft had made it that simple. If you can send me a photoshop palette file to et_jazz2@hotmail.com i’ll get working on it. I’ll add a ‘shift + right click’ or something for a deselect array unless you can think of an easier way of making it user friendly.

Fanden

help option dont help cause its very confusing.’
^^
I\‘ll have to work on that, make some more articles, add in some stuff for explaining what tilesets are why palettes are used. I was in a rush while i made the help file.

Violet

‘Can\‘t load palettes created by any program other than itself.’
^^^
The pal format I used is the ‘microsoft palette’. When you export a palette from PSP 7 you can change the file type to be a microsoft palette. But i will add some more file types to the list, like PSP 7 pal, photoshop pal, bmp files, ect.

‘No option for viewing palettes in their normal order’
^^
common mate this is for Jazz Jackrabbit, why would you want the normal order ? I thought by categorising colours it would make it easier for people.

‘You have to press enter after changing the RGB values to set the color, and even then it only works if Red is the value with focus’
^^
yeah i made it that you had to press enter, i’ll change it if it makes things easier. Sorry about the ‘Red is focus’ bug, just made a mistake, will easily be fixed.

‘It’s not like there\‘s only one place to put textured backgrounds…’
^^
I always thought it had to be in that location so that the level will run ok in 8 bit.

‘Help file: Effects Tool Press this button to confirm the changes you made to this animating tile’s properties. doesn’t make very much sense’
^^
LOL!!! LMAO! I used the JCS help to get the same layout. Forgot to paste some text in there i guess.

‘Nothing telling you which palette slot is selected’
^^
Um…isn’t there a white outline around the selected slots?

‘No way to get a Negative Color effect’
^^
Why would you want one ?

‘If you go into Choose Single Palette Color mode, JPS won’t remember which palette slots you had previously selected.’
^^
Ok i’ll put that in, sounds like a good idea. I was hoping no one would notice that they all got deselected :P

labratkid

‘The shortcut for SELECT NONE is the same as NEW FILE so if you press CTRL + N, you automatically start a new file without a prompt.’
^^
oops, ok i’ll fix that. And I’ll stick a prompt in there for ya.

‘You can\‘t open other palette files well’
^^
Jeez why did people have to make their own Pal format, what was wrong with the microsoft one ?

‘Final rating: 5.5’
^^
Thanks mate! That sort of inspiration makes us programmers eager to code freeware stuff! :P

Na but seriously thanks everyone for making those reviews. If anyone finds any more bugs I will fix them ASAP. When i get round to making a proper credit screen in the ‘about’ I’ll place your names in there. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make this program better and easier for JJ2 tileset makers go right ahead and suggest them. But do remember i’m trying to keep this program small and Jazz 2 related. Unless its of a slight benifit to JJ2 tilesets, I an’t programming it.

Alot of comments i’ve read are about that you can’t import other palettes. Well you can, but they have to be the ‘microsoft format’. When your saving a palette in another program theres often an option for what type of format ( even though they have the same extension) you want the palette to have.

Anyway I’ll add in some common formats like PSP 7 and Photoshop once i figure out how to read them. I’ll also add an import from PCX ( so using jj2 u can rip palettes out of other sets by taking screenshots ) and bmp.

————————————
Latest Update

1. Layout has been changed, only 2 categories ( the jj2 colours and user colours ).
2. Palette Entitiy ID have been added as tool tips
3. Supports PSP 8 pal files ( not yet photo shop pal files )
4. Pinball and snow and flipper things have been added to the ‘preview’ screen. ( you can edit it yourself but ).
5. Can ‘steal’ palettes from bmp files
6. Can ‘steal’ palettes from pcx files ( so you can take a screenshot at runtime in jj2 and you can open the pcx file and steal the palette from another tileset ! )
7. When you do the right click selection thing, if the first square you click is already selected, then it does a ‘deselect between spaces’ thingy.
8. Prompts have been added to ‘new game’ and closing
9. middle click works like pressing the ‘change single palette colour’ button.
10. The tools have been repositioned and stuff.
11. All bugs have been fixed that you guys have reported.

If you have anymore suggestions please make them now.

G’day, a quick review

Size – This level isn’t too large or too small, it’s just right for an internet battle because I find some of Epics levels are just too large and take too long to complete a battle in. I like this size.

Layout – The levels layout is great, it’s not character bias. There are plenty of springs so Spaz doesn’t have an advantage and there are plently of platforms so Jazz doesn’t have a hover advantage. The ammo placement is great, there is plenty of ammo around and it’s never stored in big amounts.

Eyecandy – Great eye candy, can be confusing sometimes like where the bouncer powerup is, but most of the time fine. Good use of layers, the level doesn’t look as good in low detail but the set isn’t designed to only use layer 3 and 4 for scenery. All in all, the level looks great.

Overall – Great level, the level isn’t boring and it’s colourful. Download recomended.

Score
Eyecandy = + 3
Layout = + 5
Not player bias = + 0.2
size = + 0.5

Total – 8.7

Yeah, I was thinking about adding some more trees and improving the mountains ( I resized them to fit the space and the mountains became ‘blury’ ) but I didn’t want to increase the file size too much.

Yeah, remember the kangaroo that I removed from the set? I could tell you my AIM address but I haven’t been on for about 4 months so it’s useless.

Reply to – Review by Piccolo aka SoulFirE

Yeah mate, sorry bout the leaves, they could be better but I find drawing leaves hard. I was trying hard to add detail to the set and try to make it feel like a Jazz 2 set, but as a result the leaves look too much like the ones from Jungle. I also kept the destruct sign and text sign very simular to the normal JJ2 ones because the original jj2 sets didn’t modify those in each set, they kept them the same. I could have made the exit signs use the signs which have Arrows engraved on them but I decided not to. Same with the V and H poles.

Reply to – Review by White Rabbit

I tried to put slime in the set but I guess it’s more like the slime snails leave behind, not really the slime that oozes down from things. While I was working on this set I came across ‘Slimeset’ so I tried not to make the slime anything like that otherwise you all would be accusing me of not making this set original, though I shouldn’t have bothered because you see this set as unoriginal anyway. I guess that sets attempting to be made in a ‘Jazz’-ish sort of style aren’t considered original. Also my slimefall was not inspired by the Mezmerize waterfall, if you were to look at both of them you should see that they are of totally different drawing styles. The method Dethman used probably would have suited this set better than the one I made because it looks more like oozing slime.

Also with your last comment –

“If you disagree with me and think this tileset actually looks slimy, then download. If you don’t think it is, then DON’T.”

^^^ Never judge a book by it’s cover, or in this case, never judge a tileset by it’s title, because if you don’t download it, how will you know if it is Slimy or not? Also just because the tileset may not look slimy to you, doesn’t mean you will hate it, you might like it because you see it as a colourful tileset.

The plot could have been much better, make it something like:

Level 1- Jazz is on his way to a carrot festival. When he gets to the festival he finds that the whole place is destroyed, some turtles are left behind that he has to kill :P. Jazz then follows the trail of destruction.

Level 2- He finds a little boy that says he was going for a walk and he saw the turtles heading towards his parents house, he wants you to protect them, or something :P, so you find the house and the kids parents let you sleep in the spare room.

Level 3- In the middle of the night, you wake up and there are turtles everywhere, you have to escape from the house, which is also on fire :P You then discover that the parents and the child have been kidnapped :P

Level 4- You follow footsteps or something, and you find a Turtle hotel, you go inside, and you have to search the whole hotel for a secret entrance, when you find it, you go inside ( next level )

Level 5- You find the parents and the child, they thank you, and tell you that Devan is in a secret base underground, or something. You then have to escape and find a way out of the hotel, because all the alarms have been switched on :P

Level 6- You go into the secret base, kill the baddies and prepare to vs Devan. You also find out he is about to release something that will stop carrots from ever growing again :P

Level 7 – You stop his plans by blowing everything up :P and then vs Devan.

Level 8 – You go home, and once again, you are a hero, and then you get another call, and then you end the game with. A heros job is never done :P.

If you make any more story levels, remember to add some enemies and some ammo. If you are going to make story levels, they still have to be fun.

If this is your first story level, don’t give up, because your next one will be better for sure :)[This review has been edited by ET]

Corrupted Sanctuary
___________________________
This tileset is based on an old broken down Castle.

Background – The background would look nice if it had some other castles in the background, and maybe some mountains, but rain + fog + textured background is good enough.

Decoration – For decoration, there is some shields up on the brick walls, some dark shaded bricks to use for inside the castle, some nice animating chains, and some swords and stuff. There is also a torch that can be used to lighten up dark places. I think the set could have done with some more decorations, like a skeleton attached to a wall ( like where an old rabbit prisoner use to be ) and spider webs ( thats right Disguise, I haven’t backed down on wanting spider webs :P ). Oh, and how could I forget, 4 nice flags that can be used in CTF levels to identify which castle belongs to which team. Oh, how could I forget, 2 cute fat knights :P

Accessories – The set contains some wicked flames, and somespikes to use to tourchure Jazz and Spaz ( I think the spikes should be larger, and have blood on them ). The set also has hooks, vines, V & H poles, text sign everything you need for a good level…. exept an exit sign ( so much for his respect towards single player levels )

Basic tiles – There are some nice bricks, a range of fantastic slopes ( I beleave that every set should have more then one slop ) and it also has some nice Wood tiles to add a bit more colour to this tileset.

Animation – Ok, lets see, the set has animating flames, animating Flags, animating chains, and even animating bricks. These animating bricks can be used for all sorts of things, I already have some ideas on using them to make traps in single player levels :D.

Overall- A good tileset, especially for CTF levels, but not so much for Single player levels ( no exit sign )

_______________
Alien Lab
_______________

A sort of green tileset, naturally, I like the idea of the set ( its not to do with my name or nothing ;) )

Background – A stary background, that looks like there has some colour for some reason ( reminds me of gif images :P, or when you do the effect called Noise ). A fantastic Planet, that I haven’t conquered yet!!!!!!!!! *ET starts making up a space ship *

Decoration – Lots and lots and lots of text EVERYWHERE, some normal ground tiles that looks like they have been dented or something, lots of gagets and stuff, some nuclear signs, etc. There is also some nice grey tiles to use for semi background.

Accessories – Lets see, there are destruction blocks, there are some signs for arrows, some V and H poles, suckertubes ( ah, thats something that Disguises set didn’t have ), a hook…..oh, no hook, darn. Well, it has almost everything, and once again, NO EXIT SIGN !!!! Don’t people care about single player levels :’(

Animations – Plenty of little animations, like lights flashing, pointing arrow animation, teleporter lights, other things using katherrays, etc.

Basic Tiles – well, there are about 3 different types of group tiles, they are all green, but different texture. My only objection is that the shading on the slope tiles don’t match up on the normal tiles ( as mentioned by New Spaz as well ). I am happy that you have used 2 types of slopes :)

Overall – Ok, a great set, but its those slopes that really bug me, the shading just makes me angry ( I’m strange, thats why I am an alien :P )

Ok, thats it from me :P

For: 1.23 JCS patch

Let me get this right, this will change 1.24 levels to 1.23, and people are saying that this is pretty useless? I think not ( that is if I understand what this program does ).Many of us who have both jj2 and TSF, must have once, accidentally saved a 1.23 level in the TSF editor, and been forced to remake the whole level from scratch, I know I have. This could be very useful to me :)

And even though you say it crashes, surely it doesn’t take long to open a TSF level, and quickly save it as a 1.23 level :)

I think this is worth downloading :), it can’t do any harm, and its only 14 kb * ET moves the mouse over to the download link, and suddenly the whole computer blows up and knocks the world sideways, the world then collides with all the other planets, and they are all pushed into the sun. Due to too much pressure, the sun explodes and causes a black hole, everything is sucked into it and time and matter no longer excist :P *

Reply to what Violet said: Ok, it isn’t the best level retriever, and loosing all the animations is a negative thing. But for me, if I use the TSF JCS one, until I actually click on JCS.exe, it will open every single level with the tsf jcs, it even stops the short cuts working properly, its probably something I have done wrong, but I am sure it could be useful for if someone needs to change a TSF level to a normal jj2 level.

Not everyone uses TSF to use the new tileset ( I do though :P ), so if they make a level, save it, suddenly relise that they were using the wrong JCS, they can quickly fix their error, instead of remaking the whole level, which is time filling :P

PS: Maybe this should become a debate[This review has been edited by ET]

Yay, I was the first to review this, anyway, the levels are small, but I find that large battle levels just arn’t good these days, its too hard to find people, and it makes the battles take longer, and people get bored and leave :P

Anyway, about it pack, it uses every tileset by Epic, even the HH tileset ( which you should have included incase some people didn’t have that set :P ) The levels are well made, maybe some more eye candy would be nice, but game play is what really matters. The level that uses the Colony tileset is a bit hard to move around in, because of the bad masking on the stairs ( but thats a bug in the tileset ) you could have avoided it by making smaller stair cases :P

Well, thats about all, I give it an 8.2[This review has been edited by ET]

This level is better than Bjarni’s other levels, I like the idea of the enemies being described as Pokemon.

Improvements
- Some ammo would be nice
- to stop Devan running away, make it so u drop into the room, not go in to the room through the left, cause thats where Devan escapes
- Maybe a few more enemies

Although the level is a bit, Straight, it doesn’t matter that much, try to make your next level not be linear.

I think this is a great tileset, not only are the tiles nice, but some things in it are original, I have never seen a one tile V and H pole before, and also, instead of having the normal Destruct blocks with the symbol of what weapon to use on it, he has little sign posts that u can put next to it :) some tiles arn’t very well made, for example, if you look at the flames, I can tell they have been drawn with a white background :P The tileset could still be improved, like the block tiles, have slopes, but the slopes arn’t shaded, so it just looks like u have cut abit off, not like they are natural ( thats hard to explain ), well, its a good tileset, worth downloading :)

The level has good eyecandy, but the problem is the movement, the suckertubes don’t really bother me, but the small spaces do, u should always have enough room for jazz or spaz to be able to jump up, and not hit the ceiling ( just the normal jump ) The level using some buttstomp blocks, which lots of people don’t use in battle levels, but it makes the levels better I reckon

I give this level a 7, plus 0.2 because it uses Disguises Fishy tileset, which I have seen no levels make with it.

This is a very nice looking tileset, the ground tiles are well draw, so are the huge stone faces :) The ground looks good, the trees look good, could do with some more tiles, maybe some sandy tiles or something. But what needs to be alot better is the background, the warped background is only 6 colours, and it looks too, drawn. The who tileset looks fantastic, and the background just ruins it!

Also, you should add some shading to the sun, its only 1 colour! maybe shade it so it fades to a blue colour or something :) and when the sun goes down, there is always the reflection of it in the water, that would make it look better to, cause the ships look great :)
