I never realized how good this set is. Waz tilesets have always been a bit underrated but this one in particular is better than most of his others. The theme is fairly typical: it’s your average nature-style set, with some added stuff thrown in for variety. What makes this tileset good is that is is well-drawn, versatile, and easy to use.

hmmm…Kind of good tileset! Its sugested to download! Its an original virus lvl ideea! I like it! :) With a stage made by this tileset you will never get bored!

Hm. I actually like this set more than several of the higher rated TSF sets (was bored so I was browsing through them) so I’ll review this.

First, I like how you drew the ground tiles. They look nice. The level has a nice, nature feel, though more tiles could’ve been addded in to further enhance the feel (like better and bigger trees). Poles, destruct blocks, vines and text signs are there, though arrow signs would’ve been appreciated. More leaf tiles could’ve been used here because in its current state levels would look kinda barren using this set. This set only also has 450 tiles, making there no reason for it to be TSF since it doesnt even have half the tiles the 1.23 limit has. Either more tiles should’ve been included in to take advantage of the TSF feature or this should’ve just been converted into 1.23. I don’t like the rain much here too.

Overall, I like the set, but it doesnt really feel finished and is lacking tiles. I think this could’ve turned out great if it had been expanded and the quality of the new tiles stayed relatively the same. Currently, this gets an 8.2, and a download reccomendation.

But background is bad.
I think you get that wreath tile taken by holiday hare 98 tileset.

this battle rocks!

This is very big and bunch of fun. no bugs and nice eyecandy. ammo placed nice. this would be a good level for hosting. nobody reviewed accept me.. why?? because the name sucks?? NO! the coins placed is also very good and a great coin warp! good carrots placed and a BIG size just like waz told us. waz stopped jj2 in thats not great :’(!

but also the level is very good.!

Another cool level by Waz. There are only 2 carrots, which are well hidden… I think either they should be easier to find, or there should more more.

Another CTF level but the same tileset?

GAMEPLAY:

I cannot just say the flow is bad right away. It is decent to the point where players can jump to get where you want to go. But it fails where players have to jump to get where you want to go. There are some small deadends which really could have been avoided altogether, such as the gap between the blaster and the fast fire powerup. If eye candy means sacrificing gameplay then choose gameplay. Some more springs in some places and less in others would have been better. I do not like the base placement at all. The blue base is almost in the bottom left corner while the red base is somewhat near the top center (or at least further to its closest edge than the other buse). I suppose the warps to the left and right of the red base could try to justify this, but it does not, and this probably was not the author’s intention. There are still some moderately empty spaces almost as if Waz was desperately trying to fill up the level with tiles. But it could seem to be like this because of the weak spring placement.

EYE CANDY:

Whatever I said about the last Waz CTF level with the Dark Reign tileset pretty much applies to this one.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

The carrot placement is probably better in comparison with the last level, although I cannot easily tell if only one carrot is used or not. If there is only one full energy carrot used, then the placement is not that good. And yet it can somehow work out. Ammo placement seemed too spaced out, possibly because Waz was trying to distribute it evenly throughout the whole huge level. There is TNT, although I do not know what for. Powerup placement is… I’m guessing it is like the way it is mainly so that the level has powerups. It’s nothing special, and I doubt it’s very strategic.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

I can’t say you should. I liked the last one a little more. My best advice is not to make CTF levels out of battle levels generally because of balance issues. It’s not great, it’s not horrible, but it’s a 7.

This is a bit above average, and fairly small, too.

Pros
Good eyecandy
Unique ammo placement
Good gameplay

Cons
I get stuck a lot in the one way events with the springs.
Very small.
Not my style…

Download reccomendation.

All hail Waz (one of) the best 1.24 level makers!

My reccomendations…
Make bigger levels.
Use other tilesets besides your castle one.
Use other songs besides the haunted house song.
Be careful with the X-SPEEDS of the background layers, because sometimes their movement looks a little funny, all most like they are moving.

Waz made a non TSF tileset, now I can review it.

TILES: There are some stone blocks which are meant to be used for ground, bunch of columns for decorations and walls, soem stone crystals which I think are meant for eyecandy, some cool looking gargoyles. There are also backround bricks, poles and destruct blocks, rainbow colored shields, some well made curtains, exit signs, rain, a sweet backround, and some other small stuff. There are the basic tiles (destruct and trigger blocks, hooks and vines, poles, etc), though there arent any sucker tube tiles (or maybe those wooden things are suppose to be sucker tubes), but the tileset basically has everything needed to make a decent level. Did I mention the backround is amazing?
Pros: Has everything needed, amazing backround, cool looking gargoyles etc.
Cons: Could have more tiles.

COLOR: The color here doesn’t have a large variety, but hey, its a castle tileset! There are some nice shades of red mixed with some other colors for the mountains and the bg, and there are a lot of multi-colored shields. The destruct blocks are colored well, and what I think is suppose to be used for the sucker tube (those wooden stuff) look good as well. There is a nice dark purple color used to decorate the curtains, and every other thing is either a brownish color, or grey or black(with some red for gargoyle eyes). Some of you may want more color in this tileset, but how it is right now is good enough for me.
Pros: Coloring is great and makes sense.
Cons: Not as colorful as some other tilesets;to much grey and brown.

ANIMATIONS AND STUFF: The only downfall in this tileset that bothers me the most is the lacking of animations. There are some red eyes that animate in those little gargoyle heads, and of course the destruct blocks are made to animate, and thats all, unless you make your shields animate, which would look strange. Castle tilesets usually don’t have many things you can animate, but Waz could of used his imagination and added some other animations (like blinking gargoyles, or moving bricks or something)
Pros: Has animations
Cons: Could of had a lot more

MASKING: At first you would think you would spot some masking bugs because its hard to mask gargoyles good and stuff, but the masking is actually good. The gargoyles are masked well and you cant get stuck in them or anything. The ground tiles and wall tiles are masked well. The only thing is that I don’t think those gargoyle heads should of been masked (when they arent in the wall).
Pros: Good masking of stuff
Cons: Nothing really special in the masking.

USERFRIENDLY: User friendly enough for me. The tiles are well placed in the tileset (i.e ground tiles are placed with ground tiles, columns placed with other columns etc). Nothing really makes you say “Gee, I wonder where the tile that goes with this tile is”. The destruct blocks could of been placed more closer to each other, but its ok/
Pros: People making levels with this would be able to understand how to use it.
Cons: Nothing really major.

OVERALL (not an average): The tileset is solid good and basic. It has all the basic stuff, good coloring and masking etc. It’s not one of those groundbreaking tilesets like Agama’s or some of Disguise’s and Blade’s (sorry if I missed you) but its a solid good tileset. I may consider making a level with this, since it has all the requirements and looks like it will produce a good level. Therefore, I like it.
Pros: Good tileset that is just waiting to be used to make a good level.
Cons: Not one of those “OMG WOW AMAZING” things.
Rating:8.5

OVERALL RATING: 8. A tileset which should be added to any jj2 folder, and gets a download reccomendation from me. Good Job!

Well, this is almost what I expected…

GAMEPLAY:

Not bad, but not new, interesting, or different. The layout seems more or less average. But it is much better than the previous CTF levels made. There are, however, several things throughout the level which hinder gameplay. The main problem would have to be with several of the one ways, such as near the red springs at 35,24. If you go up where the one way and the normal solid tile meet, you could get stuck. This is often ignored and it is a small bug, but it can become annoying from time to time (I already got stuck at 37,19 twice). It’s easy to fix this by making sure that the one way tile and the regular tile next to it both don’t have the same masking where they meet together (I had to use 3rd layer to make it work out in my Dark Reign example level).

EYE CANDY:

I can’t say it’s above average (I wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary since you did make the tileset). The eye candy is good, although somewhat average. I can’t really say much anyway since the tileset doesn’t have the most variety in tiles.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

I might be able to live with the carrot placement, although I question it. There are two full energy carrots near the top (which are probably too close together). But major the problem is, the blue base is closer to its nearest carrot than the red base is. That could be another balance problem. And then there’s the ammo. It seemed to be distributed unevenly in several places. As for powerup placement, it’s not the greatest, but it’s all right.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

It’s decent, but I doubt anyone would. If you really like it, yes. If you really don’t, no. I’m giving this a 7.2 (and yes, that rating is somehow higher than Small CTF Pack‘s rating. I tend to give higher ratings to packs—for the extra effort and all).

Waz is a lot like me. He makes really solid levels in short amounts of time.

This level uses Waz’s own tileset, and is good all around. Layer 5 and 6 look funny though because they look like they have an Auto-X speed sometimes while you are moving. Kind of weird looking. Download reccomendation, all.

Just to clear things up…

1.24 levels only work with the TSF Jazz2.exe and thus it does not matter which tileset is being used. No matter what, levels made in 1.24 cannot be played in 1.23, but it is true (as you probably already know) that 1.23 levels can be played in 1.24. So there.

This level isn’t bad at all, but it’s not all THAT good. But it’s pretty cool. There isn’t great eyecandy, but it’s acceptable. Not too bad. The weapons placement is rather bad, but the level is so-so. +.2 for using your own tileset.

I was in a rather bad mood when I reviewed this, and I rated it a little too low.

Pretty good.

Good Stuff:
- blue bricks
- background layers
- kept well with color theme

Bad Stuff:
- most of the ideas are ripped from Medivo
- sprite layer objects look flat
- lacking some elements of gameplay (warps, lights, float up scenery, etc.)

This would be a lot better if it were expanded. In that case, I might give it an 8.5 or so.
