Hm…this got uploaded rather quietly (that or I havent been checking my email, heh), but it’s about time this got released, since it’s pretty old now (I tested it a WHILE ago) =P.

Anyways, since J2O currently lacks active reviewers and I dont want to study for an upcoming math exam I’ll review this instead, I guess.

Basically, Biowinter is pretty much a typical winter tileset with some interesting and creative additions, but nothing really outstanding or jawdropping. Some things like the brown ground look kinda nice, and others like the snow need more detail as it’s just white. The set also needs more color variety still, imo, because seeing brown and white everywhere, with the occasional green, gets kinda boring.

On a more positive note, there’s a number of things in this set that I like. The cool crumbling scenery of the snow on the pine trees is original and I like it, the spaz animation is pretty funny, and the figures frozen in ice are creative and cool, among other things. There’s even a text sign with my name on it ;).

The set functions pretty well and is quite userfriendly. One thing I still don’t like is the ripped tiles in it though. The castle from carrotus, the spikes from inferno, it wouldve been better if you hadn’t taken the lazy way out and instead drew them yourself =\.

Otherwise, this tileset is what I consider a mixed bag kinda. There’s a bunch of things that could be improved a lot, but there are also a lot of creative things and the set is by no means bad.

Perhaps more detail on certain aspects of the set, a larger landscape variety, more colors and redrawing the ripped tiles would greatly improve this tileset, but for now I think I’m going to rate this a 7.4.

Some creative and original ideas here, and the set can be used pretty easily, but there’s a lot of room for improvement. I’d give this a download reccomendation because some of the tricks Bio used in the set kinda inspired me in certain ways.

This tileset looks like some odd dystopian combination of “Blasteria” and “Metal Mania.” Not that this is a bad thing at all.

The demo level sets the mood: You start by a lone blinking streetlight in the middle of an odd alien landscape with strange, green nebulai behind you. A moon – a few of them, in fact – can be viewed in the distance. It’s pretty, yet weird at the same time – perfect for a space-themed tileset.

What helps this tileset avoi falling into the realm of space tileset mediocrity like so many others do is the combination of “spaceyness” and the Disguise-like gradient use that strongly reminds me of another excellent weird tileset, “Metal Mania,” as I previously mentioned.

I have a few gripes with this tileset. Like with “Blasteria,” the other tileset that this reminds me of, the tiles seem to vary from quite realistic to near cartoony. This ends up conflicting a bit, and reducing the quality of the tileset. Case in point: the Star Trek-y “beam me up, Scotty” things that look like they would be used for warps but aren’t in the demo levels. They glow red through little holes in the top and bottom (there are two parts, one coming out from the ceiling and the other from the floor.) Compared to the background, this just does not look totally right. However, unlike in “Blasteria,” the cartoonyness is less polarized, making this a significantly more minor gripe than for that tileset.

The other annoyance is the foreground eyecandy. I have always been a proponent of foreground minimalism, and the blocks sort of look weird anyway. However, it is optional whether to use these or not, and I’d recommend against it personally, but it is again a choice.

Masking could use some work, especially in areas where you can get in between two diagonal blocks, which just is asking for trouble. Other than that, though, this is an excellent weird space-themed tileset that is sufficiently original as to not fall into “Mez01”-like cliche.

What do you mean by palette events? I opened a thread abuot it.

…And actuallya majority of the tileset was done in MSPaint. Other programs I used include PSP, Universe, and MSPhotoDraw (some textures).

The “God Rocks” was for fun. I don’t really know CyberSpaz.

What can I say? While this set’s theme may be overdone (buildings on some toxic wasteland), tile quality makes it all up for an 8.

This set doesn’t lack of any event tiles. Any type of destructable blocks, a hook, poles, and two types of vines; one diagonal. O.O

Quality of set is very, but very spiffy, reminds me old Dethman’s Cyberspaz sets. Foreground stuff is 1337, textured background is really cool, and things for background layers are best I have ever seen. Spiffed. Also, every tile has a different texture for itself. Even more spiffed.

On the other hand, from all palette events only carrot from carrot pinball bumper works. I can understand lack of trees and weird totems, but pinball stuff would fit in here as well. =(

And last but not least, masking of everything supposed to be on sprite layer is extremely sm00th.

Overall, this set is a breath of fresh air after all those MSPaint nightmares submitted some time ago. This set is real spiffiness with quality of Dethman. If you don’t download it, I promise you will regret it.

(Oh, and Biohazard, did you made that GOD ROCKS sign especially to remind Cyberspaz?)

You know, I somehow don’t believe about that MSPaint thing you said. ;p[This review has been edited by Cooba]
