Hmm… interesting. It’s not the first hand-drawn tileset I’ve seen, but it still has a very interesting style. It indeed does look like a strange world of art, and that is a good enough theme to build on. I would say, were you to continue this, try for a lot more eyecandy- some things for the background layers, perhaps. Maybe hills or something. Also, I would say it would be very atmospheric if you were to mess with the palette so that Jazz and all the events were the same colors as the tileset, though I am no great expert of palettes. Also I would say to make better edges for the brick texture and such. It would also be cool if you could put a few gaps in the background, perhaps, with sky or small scenes or something in it- just for variety.
First of all, always always always include an example level. Playing one beats looking at the tileset in JCS any day. But, onto the review.
This tileset is… odd. While what there is of it is a lot better drawn than I expected (except for what I presume is the background, that is horrible), there just isn’t enough of it. It lacks almost every needed tile, except for ground. And the ground that does exist is just made of blocks. I can’t really tell how you can make a level from this, going back to the start of this review. So, I am not going to give this a rating. Maybe you could attach that ‘level you hosted a while ago’ Olsen mentioned as an example level. That would help me lots.
I’m not much of a music critic, but still…
I like this quite a bit. The start isn’t too promising, but it is quite well done. I can’t say that the tune is amazing, since it wasn’t actually made by AcId, but still. My only complaint here is that it is rather loud. At the volume I normally play songs (which isn’t that loud, really), it is overpowering. It is also short, but that isn’t really AcId’s fault.
As for the peasants’ fortress being smaller, it could be made taller without loosing the theme by being put on a small hill with caves in it.
Argh! This is the second time in the last ten minutes I put a 1.24 tileset in my 1.23 folder without knowing it was a 1.24 tileset…
But anyway, ‘Technos’ is as tacky and generic as it’s name is. It has two types of ground. A brick ground, that is just a pure gradient, no texture. Tip next time- add textures to your blocks. There is also a very plain grey ground, that has edges that grow lighter (I generally find it is smart to make it grow ligher as it gets farther into the block). Both types of ground can have holes in it or be cracked to some extent. Oh, and the brick ground can have a yellow-black striped thing on it, that looks OK. There is also two animations that have this glowing, shifting, light thing, and neither look too good. Plus all the arrows, the text sign, and this ugly light thingy are animated. There are spikes, window things, wires (tubelectricky, but not as good), vines (which are chains and look OK), hooks, text signs, sucker tubes, and destruct blocks. There are also there wierd things above the sucker tubes that I have no idea what they are suppost to be. But really, the best thing about this tileset is it’s textured BG.
A 6.2 from me.[This review has been edited by RSPSS FR]
When I made my last review, the wheel was still a radically new invention.
When I saw the title of this tileset, I thought it would be an island tileset. How wrong I was.
Well, this tileset is quite interesting. The tiles are mainly simply made, but there is so many different ones and so much various eyecandy is all evens out. This is one of those rare TSF tilesets that actually could not be converted to 1.23 without loosing some tiles/animations. And, speaking of animations, there are a lot of them. One of the basic ground types is animated. The signs are animated. There are animated fireworks bursting in the background. There are giant animated words floating in the air. There are animated bobbing baloons holding up animated bobbing hooks. There are spinning coins with Jazz, Spaz, and Lori’s faces on them. I think you get the point. Also on eyecandy, there are some interesting things. Giant wheels which can have a platform centered on them so it looks like a very low-load carnival wheel (nice touch, by the way). Giant pictures of Lori. Giant cards. Giant dice. Giant pool balls. It makes me wonder where are all the giant rabbits to play with them, or if they are just there to look pretty. As for needed tiles, they are there. Destruct blocks, all of them, and of four colors, are present. Spikes are here. OK looking belts are here. Hooks are here. Vines are here, though they are nothing special. Warps are here, though I think they are ugly. If eye-catching, blinking, animations were needed tiles, this category would have a double check.
Having lost all semblances of flow, I just want to say- in conclusion, this tileset’s looks is greater than that of it’s parts.
All hail the Tea of Wisdom! He is the king of tilesets even when bored! Yaaaay!!!!
But anyway, Boredset is another good tileset by Disguise. It features multiple ground types (natural ground, stone blocks, colorful tiled walls, and mezish red and blue blocks), with transitions between them. It has the normal amount of background eyecandy for a Disguise tileset (layer 8, hills, and some moving clouds, which sadly seem to be edged with blue) the stone and natural ground types are the best- my only complaint is that the stones look strange if their edges are exposed to the sky. The tubes are nice and wooden, more interesting than many tubes. The signs are pretty generic, but still are good (an exit sign, a ‘SSF’ sign, and an ‘iCeD Rules’ sign). The trees are somewhat… small, but still are good eyecandy. Sadly the non-natural grounds lack any good eyecandy. But still, this is a good and versitile set.
A 8.5.
Wow… just wow.
The tileset has all the features of the Diamondous conversion, with approaching screen, ect. but it also has even more! It has the JJ1 lower bar thing (the one that shows you your health and weapon and stuff), which would be really neat to place in layer 1 so it sticks at the bottom of the screen (like that thing in tomb rabbit). Also, it has more added features. Most notable is a background eyecandy peice which is basicly a strech of land with pots on it. Nothing really fancy, but it adds to the background well. However, somehow I think this is worth .5 less than your last one. Maby it is that the JJ1 tileset was so… boring that the conversion is bland, no matter how greatly improved it is. But still, so far NOKA has redifined my idea of a ‘good’ JJ1 tileset conversion.
END REVIEW
Wow!
This is the most complete JJ1 conversion I have ever seen!
First, the tileset has all the basic needed things for a conversion- the ground, the basic eyecandy, ect. Next, the tileset has some things I have seen in conversions before, but not in all conversions- the original JJ1 exit sign, jazz sprites, ect. Also, the tileset has some things I have never seen in a JJ1 conversion before- the ‘approaching’ screen comes to mind. The author even took the liberty of adding new tiles- sucker tubes, vines, ect., some of which actually look good! There even are two pallet-changed versions (an evening and night version). While I am not too fond of the effect, I do congradulate the author on the effort. After all that work, simply changing the tileset(s) from 1.24 to 1.23 must have been pretty easy! So, in conclusion, I have lost track of what I was saying, so I will just get it over with and give this a 9!
END REVIEW
hmm…
While this is quite overrated, I do say this is an above average tileset (or at least above the average we have recently… LACK OF GOOD TILESETS HAS DRIVEN ME MAD!!!!). It has two types of surfaces for the marble ground- golden and vervet-carpeted. There are two types of layer 4 backgrounds- tile and some wallpaperish thing. There are vines, hooks, signs, and tubes. There are no destruct blocks, or spikes. But then again, hotel tilesets rarely need those. And for eyecandy, you would expect there to be a lot, right, since eyecandy is what hotel tilesets are more or less about? Correct. There is a lot of eyecandy. You have a lot of hotel cabinets, refrigerators, chairs, sinks, toilets, ect (most of which seem to just be golden re-colors of stuff from the previous hotel tilesets you made- shame on you). There, however, is no scenery for the background layers besides 8 (OMG MINUS MINUS POINTS!!!!!111). However, there are penguin butlers and stuff- including a penguin with it’s ‘tuxedo’ off (OMG PLUS PLUS POINTS!!!!!111). But really, I like the ‘golden’ trim around everything and that toilet (is it a toilet? It kinda looks like some sorta TV. also…) is… original. And that chan…. wow! is that a penguin bowing! Kewl. What was I saying? Oh yessss…. that chandelier (sp?) is nifty. Since my brain is obviously messing up now I will just say I shall give this tileset a 8.5…… oh yea, and that that euro is OBVIOUSLY on steroids.
This level is, in my opinion, a above average level. While it is over-rated by others glares at dx dc it does have it’s high points.
The eyecandy is ok in layer 4, but for some reason the bg eyecandy I didn’t like as much. The ammo placement is average, not overdone imo. The carrot placement is unique. I like the shuttle thing you have to do to get to it, tho the carrot spire thing itselth would be great for campers, expecially with the bouncers. The base placement is pretty good. There are several routes to the bases, making it easy for aquick entry and exit (expecially with the shuttle.)
Overall- a 6.2
Pretty good tileset. It has a good background, which almost looks like it is nin multiple layers but is actually just on layer 8 (and I like the star smilyface and text). Sadly it lacks eyecandy for any layer other than 4. The fireflys looked strange, but it dosen’t matter.
Gnarble.
You didn’t see all the example levels, did you? Gnarble Gnarble.
Man, it took me a long time to decide to say this!
While I can not use this (I dont have JJ1), I feel like posting anyway. Blargh
NEVER trust anything that has “cool” in it’s name. They so often turn out to be horrible.
Yeah, Waz is right. I am a CRAPPY artist, and I work in paint, yet one of my tilesets got a 7. Say, an amazing (disguise-quality) tileset using paint came out, and you gave it a 5! That, I say, is unfair.
I have no intentions of downloading this, however. My list of tilesets is too large as it is.[This review has been edited by RSPSS FR]
Wow!
City + Town + Sewers + Subway + lotsa backgrounds = great tileset![This review has been edited by RSPSS FR]
But this IS a race level, so you rate the level. How would you, for example, like it if you were looking for a good sp level and got a high-rated one that is really crappy but has a good tileset?
Now for the review (I wish I knew more about race levels). The eyecandy is kinda bland. I think only layers 4,7, and 8 were used a lot (there is a little bit of layer 3, but not a lot). The layer 4 eyecandy is a little sparse, but the ground is interesting enought (not that people would be standing around to sightsee). The flow is fine, but you can get really slowed down in the areas with the springs (but that is the point in race, right?). Also, in some places if you jump on small niches in the wall you can see OVER the wall where it cuts off. But, I doubt people would see this, since people don’t stop to sightsee in race.
And also, did you base the tileset off your earlier minimaze tileset?[This review has been edited by RSPSS FR]
I looked it over and, it may just be some kinda bug on my part or someting, but is Zatox Station67 by CelL supposed to have two blue bases and no red bases?
[Official response: Good eye. I’m not exactly sure why, but when played in single player, Zaitox DOES, in fact, have two blue bases. In multiplayer, however, it is perfectly fine, so no harm there. -Trafton][This review has been edited by Trafton AT]
