Hmmm, can’t seem to log into my old account. Oh well.

So, it’s been about five years now… time, I think, for a retrospective:

Looking at it now I have to say I find the start of the episode a bit underwhelming, the design is rather dull, with little platforming challenge to speak of and the eye candy doesn’t work too well… however, once you reach the cliff face in the second level and start your climb up the mountain and into the caves it starts to get more interesting. The bits with the falling rocks still work quite well I think, especially in the caves and the fact that you can take multiple paths in several places adds a lot to the fun.

“Sorna Falls” also holds up pretty well, though not a terribly complex design it’s a nice natural landscape and a bit more challenging than the earlier levels. After that it’s back to the linear left to right gameplay with “Into the long grass”… which to be honest is a bit boring. It works adequately as a story level but is not much of a challenge.

“A call for help” works better as it’s more contained, focusing more on story and exploration and less on just traversing the area. There’s a few puzzles blocking your way that, while simple, make for an amusing aside from the platforming action. “Down the tubes” is super-linear, but somehow it works and the flood at the end is cool.

Then comes arguably the most spectacular level of the pack, “Goose Chase”. Though the layout of the level itself is essentially very basic, the fact that you’re being chased through it by a giant T-rex makes it all the more interesting. :)

This is followed by an unfortunate return to the familiar left to right traversing with “Climate change”. While the subterranean path of the level is slightly more interesting, as a whole it doesn’t really hold up and could have done with some more platform challenges.

Which brings us to the finale that spans “the storm” and “coastal cliffs”, better than some of the previous levels but not among the best, though I like the way the story plays out with the chopper diverting to a different meeting point and Jazz’ sarcastic comments breaking up the action…

GRAPHICS & SOUND

The limited colour palette definitely hurt the look of the tileset. All I can say is, never do 3D tilesets unless you have more than 256 colours at your disposal. It just doesn’t really work. It’s too detailed to have flat surfaces of colour and dithering is scarcely an improvement in most cases. I think the dinos still look pretty cool and the rock surface and a few other things work well, but the foliage and trees could have looked A LOT better, as could many other things.

I would like to note though that Jaws and I created ALL the graphics ourselves. We did not “steal them off some website” as has been suggested by a certain reviewer who should perhaps think more happy thoughts.

But I digress…

The cutscenes, today, are interesting to look at. With all I’ve learnt in the past five years I could easily pick them apart and go into all the things I could have done so much better but as a support for the story they did the trick at the time and that’s what matters.

I definitely don’t regret the decision to not have any music. It was more than made up for by the various atmospheric sound effects that supported the levels, from the crashing of waterfalls to the roaring of T-rexes.

CONCLUSION

While I’m glad so many enjoyed the episode enough to give it a 9 or 10 I think I’m gonna have to agree with the more moderate reviewers and give it a 7.7. It has its moments.

(Since we’re not supposed to rate our own packs I’ll refrain from actually submitting that rating, though)

The tile set was alright, but too hard to figuer out if something was thee or just a background. The levels were way too easy, I could just run through them getting hurt and make it to the end. The short films I though were ok, but too short. And you could have done much more with the plot you were using. The reason why I’m not give a 3 is because of the tile setting, the short videos, and one of your levels was one of the best levels, and that would be when you run away from the dinasure. That was the coolest thing, and would be better if made longer, or more diffacult aka more obsicules.

This pack contains 12 single-player levels, a tileset, a few music files and 5 cinematics, but it’s not about the cinematics, but it’s about the levels.

Stranded
You have been stranded on an island called Site-B. The eyecandy in this level is ok, but the background looks a bit empty. The level disign is in one word: boring. You just need to follow a straigt path from left to right. In games like super mario this would’ve been possible, becouse mario can’t jump very far, but in jazz2 you can just run and jump through this level in 30 seconds, without missing lots of pickups.

Wierd Lizards
This level is not much different than the previous one. The background contains a few trees and rocks and a big hill, making the background again a bit empty. The level design is a bit better than the previous level, more jumping is needed and it’s a bit harder. Near the and of the level you need to climb trees to find the cave leading to the next level.

Under the Mountain
This level was also pretty easy. It’s inside a cave, and you need to avoid a few rocks and jump over a few collapsing platforms. That’s it. Eyecandy was very poor, only the Ground, and a plain rocky background.

On top of the World
This level is on the top of a big mountain or something like that. Eyecandy is still poor but the level design is a bit better. Falling down often results in a deep spiky pit (you can’t get out) and is sometimes unavoidable, being very annoying.

Sorna Falls
This level is nothing but rocks and waterfalls. Falling down a waterfall results in going back to the beginning. It’s a bit a maze like level, which is pretty fun, but the falling down spoils the fun a bit.

Into the Long Grass
This level is into the long grass (what a surprise). Eyecandy has improved a lot, but the level is very easy because you can just run and jump through the whole level.

A Call for Help
This level is mainly inside a house thingy. Eyecandy is ok and this level is a lot harder than the other levels. Sadly, after you exit the house the level is nearly finished. Another 30 second level…

Down the Tubes
Youre inside a sort of sewer. Eyecandy is a bit poor again, and the level is pretty short and easy. There’s a cool trap in the level with raising water and lots of fish.

Goose Chase
In this level you’ll be chased by a T-rex I think. But it’s far to easy and if you shoot and run to the right for 30 seconds, the level is finished. Eyecandy is okay, but the level is just far to easy and short.

Climate Change
Just another boring level with a few dinosaurs. Blah

The Storm
Nothing much to say about this level. This time it rains at the background. It’s again easy to just helicopter-ear over the whole level in 30 seconds.

Coastal Cliffs
This level is very small and easy again, especially for Jazz. You can just fly over the whole level again.

Conclusion
This pack is mostly aimed at realism and at the story, spoiling the fun a bit. The levels are very short and easy, and its often possible to just skip the whole level by just jumping over it. Eyecandy is sometimes a bit poor, but this is often just because of the tileset. Item placement is ok, and so is enemy placement. The cinematics are nice but I dont think it’s worth to download because of the filesize, and because the levels bring not much special.

It is my first download here and first review. I’ve read previous posts started this “episode” and now I’m surprised by what I’ve seen. Do you guys review the same levelpack that is available in downloads above? :O Not that it’s so bad it’s rather horrible and should’ve never seen the light of day :P
First of all – what are all those cinematics for? They aren’t played under JJ2 and the so-called intro should be in readme.txt since its only a single sentence or so… why? Because the whole download is too huge for some players – w/o those worthless cinematics it would only be 3+ MB big :P
OK, let’s get to the rest – LEVELS :(
Tileset is … UGLY – bitmaps taken from some site dithered down (I think) to 8-bit palette doesn’t make tileset yet you know … Jazz and other sprites DOESN’T FIT in amatuer, crappy graphics like this. Leveldesign – I was hoping that it’s gonna improve from level to level but it was rather Mario-like-go-right stuff with some exceptions, and look at the background – repetitive chaotic patterns of this “tileset” remind some 8-bit retro game rather than JJ2 game with ultracool graphics. Look at the grond/dirt in original tilesets – it’s not a black hole like here, right? Overall design was rather boring and I haven’t played through all levels – I couldn’t stand it long. Once again look at the original levels – do you see how the whole levelspace is used? Do you see placement of baddies and how they act? Do you see graphics?????
The only good point of this “episode” are the ambient sounds – but they’re used instead of original music which is crime – it additionally makes the whole stuff less dynamic. Just one point up for that and one another for the idea but none for leveldesign and graphics.
I hope that next time you’ll use some of standard tileset and practice more with leveldesign – release more single levels before you make a whole episode and please DO NOT KILL JAZZ JACKRABBIT anymore.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s the 53rd review for this darned overrated pack. Oh well.

What we have here is a 17.5 MB package including 12 levels, ambient soundtracks, 5 3D cutscenes and lots of other stuff which I’m too lazy to mention.

A huge amount of effort has gone into creating this episode, however, that doesn’t make it perfect for me.

The story tells the quest of young Jazz, stranded on an island inhabited by dinosaurs – yes, the story’s stolen from Jurassic Park. However, that didn’t matter for me at all.

The levels are all pretty well designed, some with very original stuff, however way too short and easy. I played through this in around 20 minutes I believe (can’t remember correctly), which is way too short considering what could have been possible. The levels are mostly outdoor areas with lots of evil enemies and a few puzzles scattered about. Those were pretty easy though, could’ve had some more depth. The dino hunt level was cool, but too short and easy again.

Like I said, the difficulty of this episode isn’t very high. The enemies are mostly not strategically placed, the puzzles aren’t that hard to solve, what else? Boosted difficulty had made this a lot more fun.

A good aspect of the pack is that it’s pretty creative. There are some ideas and tricks I’ve never seen before, and the dino hunt was spectacular. The puzzles could’ve been better, but overall very nice.

Eyecandy is so-so. In the outside areas it looks nice, while in the caves it’s dull. The tileset is not the best, which could be the main reason. It’s not bad, but it needs a lot more detail, especially in walls. Level 8 had exactly 10 different tiles I believe. Some tricks are neat though.

The story is told in a nice way through short dialoges of the character, and it’s easily understandable even for someone who didn’t watch the film. Some things don’t really fit in like the ammo, but that doesn’t matter.

Overall this pack is nice, especially for those caring about lots of extra features like cutscenes and makros (that are those little recorded games showing up if you do nothing in the main menu), but the levels were a little dissapointment due to easieness and shortness.

Those are my two cents, agree with it or not.

It’s a decent pack though, and worth the download.

EDIT:

I’ve played with my friend in Coop mode yesterday. It was fun, so I’ll increase the rating a bit. :)
