Short level short review. Not bad, simple but good. Can’t really give a download recommendation because it’s too short for that.
I don’t really know what to say about the level. But let’s see.
Eyecandy
Normally it doesn’t bother me if the eyecandy isn’t as good, but this is just too simple. I’m not saying it’s ugly but it’s waaaay to simple. Just the background and some purple hills. You could have given the hills blue and yellow colors as well to give it an Eminem song reference. But anyway this is less than basic.
Gameplay
I don’t know. Maybe I’m bad at the game, but as soon as I started the level I didn’t know what to do. There was a trigger crate which didn’t seem to do anything. I needed to use a cheat since I wanted to see the whole level. Well, maybe somethings wrong with me, but I felt that when the level wasn’t boring it was frustrating. These 2 aren’t a good combination. There were too many open areas. The frog warp part was sort of interesting, though it was rather difficult to do without turning into the frog. And the part where I had to go through the walls with layer 3 covered platforms was just annoying. Seriously, I couldn’t decide when I was going int he right direction.
Pickups
I picked up a lot of weapon types but they weren’t really needed. I didn’t really have a problem with the pickups. But I don’t remember any health carrots in the level. That’s just another bad thing. Didn’t really find many secrets and since the level needs a password I couldn’t check if there were. I don’t think there were gems either. All in all I had the least problems with the pickups.
Enemies
Can’t say they were well placed. Seemed like you just randomly placed them where you felt they were ok, though since there were a lot of open places you couldn’t actually place them well. What was another annoying thing though, was that every enemy respawned in about 6-7 seconds. That won’t make the level better, especially when there are about 12 ravens in one area.
Music
Sorry to say but you just managed to ruin this as well. The music choice is actually good, BUT once it ends there will be complete silence for around 7-8 minutes. OK I actually heard some background noise but that’s just not enough for the music.
I sort of understand what TreyLina was talking about when saying one of my levels were boring and needed to improve because that’s how I was feeling while playing this. Maybe it’s just me and other will think it’s good but I just didn’t enjoy this level. It’s too long, monoton, and when not that’s because it’s frustrating. One of the few positive things I can say about this level is that there weren’t glitches. I’m not certain that the beginning was a glitch, so I’ll count it as if I was clumsy. The other thing may be the boss fight which wasn’t bad, though when I died it crashed the game.
I certainly don’t recommend this to anyone, you can try it once though but if I didn’t like i tat all I don’t think you will. To be honest I would give it 4.2 if it wouldn’t be Christmas in a few days. So here is a 5.2.
The level title kind of tells you what to expect. Eyecandy is very good and it works well as a battle level.
Exactly what I was looking for. Winter carottus.
Wow! Haven’t I played these before??? Didn’t you upload the same levels in a different pack??? And they still suck??? Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
10 points for copying 0 for everything else unfortunately I have to give you the rating of 1 :(
Wow I’m glad you don’t make levels any more. Did you put any effort in them at all??? I don’t do so good levels but I could make a better one in 20 minutes. Jeeeeeeeesus!!!!!!!
Include the tileset. The game doesn’t load without it.
Don’t worry about the rating I’ll change it when I can play the level. If you don’t include the tileset, then I’ll just simply delete the review.
[Please don’t rate levels if you can’t play them ~cooba]
Nice!! I think I’ll use it in the future for a level or two.
Mivel gondolom érted a magyart úgy írom.
Not much use to review the level since the uploader hasn’t been online for 2 year. Still I feel like I must say that for a first level it is pretty good. Actually the placements should be the only things that definitely need to be changed.
1. No need for the superkick block before the exit because jazz won’t be able to get there.
2. No need for so much food. Especially in every corner.
3. More enemies.
4. If you are able to give it similar quality than a bit longer level.
5. Put a coin warp if there are coins.
There were things I liked as well:
1.Bad placement
2.Level was nicely made( I didn’t find tile glitches)
3.Many secrets
4.Lot of exploring(compared to the level length)
Too bad you didn’t do any more levels because this one was quite ok for a start.
Nice level though the last third of it can get confusing after a while. I had to walk the same path about 15 times which gets a bit irritating. Apart from that it was well made. It was quite long with lots of secrets. Though as I’ve mentioned the end was a bit too repetitive(could have used some text messages to help the player). By the way it was finished. There was a trigger crate that opened the area which lead to the end of the level. It was difficult to find it though. This however doesn’t ruin the level so I definitely recommend this.
It’s a pretty good level though there were tile glitches that I couldn’t help noticing. Layer 8 for example didn’t work properly. A simple solution for that is to make a copy of the original Hell level and delete the content with the exception of layer 8. Though as I played the level I think it might have been just laziness instead of incompetence. The shootable iceblocks for example turn into paths instead of disappearing. Also I noticed a few times that you left bits of tiles on layer 1 and certain tiles were missing from layer 4 though none had importance. Maybe you didn’t notice or something.
Luckily the level itself and the gameplay made it an enjoyable level. The path divided a few times made it harder to collect everything(this isn’t a con). There were some secrets, though i rather found alternative routes which led to dead ends and a bunch of goodies. Not really secrets but there surely are players who don’t check it. Difficulty was average, bit tougher at certain places. This is also one of the levels that remind me of the original ones. The level worked well except for the iceblocks.
In my opinion it ended up as a good level, thanks to the gameplay and the level design (where it didn’t have tilebugs) so I can say that downloading it won’t do any bad.
Like the previous reviewers have already mentioned this level contains a lot from the original colony level. Honestly I don’t think it was necessary, the level would have been even better if you don’t copy areas from the original level. What I liked though, is that your level really gave me a “Jazz Jackrabbit-ish” feel when I was playing. You could add it to the original pack and few would even notice. Though there were a few layer 3 bugs. Also 90% of the things worked as they were planned to, didn’t get stuck anywhere and didn’t find any serious bugs.
Item placement was good, I really can’t complain about it. Though there were very few health carrots at the beginning. Oh well never mind, I didn’t die, so whatever.
Enemy placement was alright. Bit harder than the original but it didn’t require you to be very careful.
Music was the original so not much to say about it.
I was surprised that even though the level was quite long it stayed decent until the end. That’s why I have to say again the copy of the original level was pointless, since as this level proves, you are quite a good level maker.
All together I say that this level should be downloaded and played through minimum once. It will remind you of the original levels (not because it contains some of the original areas), which in my opinion is not a bad thing at all. Can’t mention enough that I have no problems with the original levels.
My rating is 7.5.
Download recommendation: Yes.
Great conversion. Good work. I will definitely do a level with each of them.
Nice level, though it sometimes didn’t work at certain parts.
It’s worth downloading it.
Great conversion. I like the diamondus tileset so some extra types will certainly be welcome.
If you like the original diamondus tileset then you should download this.
It has been a while since I’ve downloaded anything from here but I liked the design so I tried it. I have to say this is a very good level. The often small space and the cave design is very well done. Though I had to get used to the fact that ceiling spikes actually work here (which is good). I got every type of ammo with the exception of seekers and pepper spray. The bouncer got really useful at certain places mostly when I was low on health. Health was actually enough, whenever I needed only 1 hit I got a carrot. Even if not, I survived far enough to get one. I found quite a lot of secrets, I think there were even a few which couldn’t be accessed though I’m not 100% sure. You can argue that it’s too linear, too simple etc. but it depends on who’s playing. For example I like levels which don’t divide 20 times in 35 places. Yes-yes and I’m a horrible person for liking the original levels as well. I like when I know where I’m actually going. Also I couldn’t care less about a story. J.K. Rowling may be a good writer but I doubt she’s a good level creator. So there’s no point in making a bad story for a good level, as well as making good stories for a level that sucks. I think it’s perfectly okay that you used the original music, don’t know how you think about it but I like the original tracks. Another reason why I like this level is because you can see that this wasn’t a 2 hour work. It is really long and still very precisely done. I really can’t find too many things that could lower the rating. Maybe that there are very few saving points. I can’t really complain about the difficulty since in my opinion a level needs about as much difficulty as this level has (well maybe a little bit less).
My rating is no less than 9.5 and even if it’s not a perfectly accurate rating I can calmly recommend this level for any player.
Great conversion. One of my favorite tilesets. Now I have 5 more types with the original two having added tiles. They all look great. Worth downloading this.
Well, 9 levels. I have to say you really had some interesting and good ideas. The problem was that these ideas weren’t done well. I think there were too many open areas, which were really confusing after a while. Trying to make a level more challenging with regenerating enemies ads to the difficulty but doesn’t add to the fun of the level. And anyway what were you thinking on the first level I had to fight about 12 queens to pass the level. What about the pickups? There were hardly any some coins carrots very minimal ammo some 1 ups and nothing else. Also putting 5-6 enemies in an area where you’ve got 1 block space to move isn’t a good thing either. Another thing, you could at least put some signs to help the player know where he should go. There were some glitches as well at certain warp areas.
But at least you could use the tilesets properly. So as I said these are levels with some very good ideas which could have been done better.
My rating is 5.7. This means your pack was good enough for not being crap, but bad enough for me not to give it a download recommendation.
EDIT: I replayed the levels. As you said they were made to be difficult but the last 2-3 were well, something way harder than “difficult”. About the 12 queens, I didn’t actually count them last time I just wanted to point out the fact that I had to battle a lot of them (now I’m quite certain there were more than 15). Certain bats keep respawning in every level btw. And as you asked, I will mention that the warps were glitchy in the carrotus level where the “warp target” put you in a place with 1 block space. Warp target should be somewhere with 8 empty tiles around you otherwise the player will get stuck in the wall. I think I met some of those glitchy warps in the medivo level as well.
Also most boss fights were in really tight spaces which were full of bats. I know you wanted the levels to be challenging but that’s too much.
Could you play through all the levels btw?
Anyway last time I think I made it to the 3rd level without cheats, but since I wanted to see the whole pack (because I don’t want to review something I haven’t even played through and give an unaccurate rating) I just used the health cheat to check out the other levels. The first 6 levels are so-so but the rest are just impossible. The player just feels that he/she is squeezed through a mousehole and then he gets 4-5 bats that respawn in 8 seconds.
Anyway like I have already mentioned the lack of pickups is a big problem. For me the levels would have been much more fun if there were at least a minimum amount of stuff to get. Without them it was just running around in a nearly empty level. Also I noticed that most of the time the 1 ups lead to dead ends from where I couldn’t get out.
All together the levels look ok or interesting in some cases but when it come to playing you’ll notice that it’s unfairly hard. The puzzles are sometimes quite creative but other times you brake a trigger crate and don’t even know if you’ve screwed up something or did something that will help in continuing the level. Though as a positivity I can admit that I didn’t lose my interest in the levels since I was really curious to see all of them (unlike the last single player level I tried)
Sorry but I can’t give a higher rating than 6. For second time it was slightly a bit more fun than last time. I hope you will still make levels as this one wasn’t that bad for a start and I’m sure you are able to improve. Next time try to target the average players (believe me it’s not a hard task to get a good rating from me :D), just don’t forget pickups.
