It’s interesting to see a tileset I’m so familiar with in such a new way. While the differences are largely subtle, the feel of the classic castle set versus Rage of Aquarius is astonishingly different. RoA converts the castle set into a much more harsh and unsettling environment. The traditional smooth surfaces have become worn and weathered, and the insertion of some of the bone tiles from the hell sets compliments the new style very well. I also really like the new stuff added, such as the holes and the stairs. One thing I can say about that is that, with the new vibe of the set, it almost seems as if the steeper angles should be stairs too.
The example level really surprised me. I guess I just haven’t been around in too long, but there is so much that I’ve never seen before… For one, that little swirly slide thing actually functioning in some way. Also, there were random “do not use” events that somehow became skeletons in-game. A series of alternating weird textures with warp horizon in layer 8 under a strange white tile (which I don’t see anywhere in the actual set for some reason) in layer 7 creates a beutiful radiating sun effect. AND, when I go into the events menu, everything is strange and different… No enemies tab, all the platforms and pinball events out in the open… Needless to say, I’m really confused. Haha. I feel like I’m no longer qualified to adequately review whatever is going on with this set, but I think it’s really interesting and cool. :)
The reordering of the set was definitely well thought-out, putting complimentary pieces in more convienient groups throughout the set. Since it’s a remake with some additions, the usability is definitely top-notch. I especially like how the bones were converted to mesh with the castle set so well, even adding some shadowed tiles with bones in the foreground and castle in the back.
Overall… Well, I was never the biggest fan of the castle set, but I think this conversion really kicks it up a notch. In my opinion, that actually adds even more credibility to this set. For making the castle tileset into something way more awesome, I’ll say this should get a 9/10. :)
No we’re not, Dodges. This looks excellent, Violet :)
woah, i know i said i was finished with JCS but this tileset is actually weird enough for me to consider using O_o
It’s pretty weird, but still good..
Layer 6-7 should have more colors maybe.
Why don’t you make something new? We’re tired of conversions.
It’s Medivo. That’s about it. Glad someone made a better conversion than CelL’s old one, though.
10 for the same reason most people give it too: the author and his place in the community. Yay for the bias!
Kidding, the tileset is awesome, but the story is true
Well, MedvioD. I’m assuming that this is the next in a series of conversions like CrysilisV and RaneforusV, and it’s quite reasonable, too. However, it isn’t quite as good as the aforementioned conversions, mostly because of some clashing art.
For the most part, it’s quite a useful Medivo conversion, with plenty of eyecandy, and loads of possibilities, as shown in the main example level. However, several of the tiles stand out, such as the larger bricks, which seem badly blurred. Also, I can’t seem to figure out exactly why there’s a warping spaz animation in the set. There isn’t much destruct scenery, either, and it’s quite low-quality compared to the rest of the set, sadly. Perhaps the set could have been expanded to include more destruct scnery, or useful tiles like H and V-poles. Some of the tiles in the background need to be flipped, which I dislike somewhat, especially if there’s space for pre-flipped variants. There are 870 tiles in the set, so there would have been room.
Apart from these flaws, however, it is still quite a good set. It has a nice variety of tiles, plenty of animations, and is a good choice for a castle-themed level. An 8.5 and a download reccomendation.
Weaker in comparison to Violet’s other JJ1 conversions due to lacking the “wow factor” provided with CrysilisV and RaneforusV, but still a top class conversion. I especially liked the inclusion of Holidaius ground, as having a second solid type expands on the possibilities of a tileset; in this case allowing to make more organic looking levels.
you can view the new concepts if you run these without running them from JCS and actually make some of them if you use reworder. :D
“There’s also special effect used in one level so why can’t you give him 10??”
Because this is a tileset upload, not a level?
TomoAlien: This is a conversion of a Jazz Jackrabbit 1 tileset.
Really GOOD tileset and levels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the hell do you rate so bad?
This is the most perfect medivo remake i’ve ever seen… There’s also special effect used in one level so why can’t you give him 10??
@Narcist: You seem to be a permanently happy and satisfied person, why didn’t you give him 10?
I must say this is a pretty nice tileset. It’s very warm, having most of the hues in the warm range. The shiny columns and tubes with some rim lighting are quite nice. And the contrasting cold blue background gives it a really great atmosphere.
The animated tiles look great and some have quite a lot frames and look really smooth. Some other animated thingies like fireball blaster trap isn’t smooth, which is a shame because it’s quite useful and interesting.
Also the Example levels are mindblowingly nice and use some really nifty tricks, including one that the author of the tileset invented. Dry lava is something I’ve never seen before.
The drill is a gimmick used in many platformers that isn’t possible using JCS.
The thing you could’ve improved in the tileset is the squished moon. It’s just looks odd and unprofessional. Also, this odd anime-like rushing lines background doesn’t really appeal to me, it hurts my eyes a bit. The Dense rain tiles look too repetitive IMO, they don’t have any size variation.
Overall, it’s a good looking set that spills it’s atmosphere out of your screen. The cold outdoors and hot indoors contrast in a way giving it an unique feel. If you need an evil castle, then this is what you should get.
Edit:Bumped the rating up to 9, because i think i was a little too harsh with it :P
My eyes are humilated! i’ll use it soon for a lvl
its very nice to be a tileset edit my fav is ranforus v past
hello, ima making an level with “A Fire Place”, its an good SIMPLE tileset!
I’m a bit behind with the rating, but i’ve lately revisited this and tbh there’s really not much more you can ask for from a conversion. I wasn’t overly fond of Raneforus in JJ1 either, but the work done to it here (esp. the past/present versions, which is a neat idea for a theme) is not only beautiful to look at but also does a great deal for the usability and possibilities of the tileset.
I was kind of planning on ending the review there, but it looks like it fell just outside the scope of a quick review so i will go into a bit more detail and mention some things i was gonna leave out.
The reason i’m giving this a rating of 9+, which I think is quite high given that most of the graphics weren’t made by the author, is easy to explain. Most tileset conversions, even sets from JJ1, need a fair bit of of tweaking done before being ‘complete’ for JJ2 and ready to design a solid level with. Whether this requires the addition of useful tiles such as poles or destruct blocks or whatever, or going a bit beyond by providing extra detail or editing the palette, these elements have been generally present in conversions to make them more usable. It takes a certain amount of work, especially when the original set is very lacking by itself. The tiles added here may be taken from other sources, but they go a long way in not only enforcing the theme of the set, but increasing the variety of Raneforus exponentially. The execution here was almost flawless (tho i kinda agree with lrk the theming in the future version does clash a bit).
I hope the versatility and variety you’ve added to this tileset will make people consider using Raneforus in the future, it looks like some very nice work can be done with this. Excellent job.
I like it really much, I could really make something with this… It inspired me. This is not a bad thing, but I’ll say it: I find the headspinning owl disturbingly retarded. :P But hey, that’s the thing with owl sometimes…
