Sonic With A Gun… it’s promoted on the homepage of Jazz2Online, so it must be a very good download! And today I gave it a shot.
It contains a pack of six worlds. Firstly we have Emeraldus, which was a tough start already, it was a hard job for me to complete. The second world of Marbelava was my personal favorite, I especially like the part with the platforms floating on the lava and the ‘eruptions’ carrying a platform allowing you to make it to a higher spot. Gravis was very, very hard because of the – so high that they are nearly impossible – jumps I had to take. Especially the ones with a bad guy waiting you up on top. VERRRRY frustrating. The pinball like places however are a nice touch! Then we have Labyrinthion, which was a labyrinth for sure: it was very difficult to find my way through, you can easily get lost. Noirlite let me actaully feel like Sonic with those ‘loops’. It is however very easy to fall to death. The final world of Fabricant was another big hell to get through, just like in Labyrinthion you could easily get lost and the spears sometimes simply block your way, with just no way through, actually forcing you to pump it full of lead before it finally blows. I think the overall difficulty of these levels is way too high for the average JJ1 player, so that necessitates me to reduce that from the rating of these levels.
Eyecandy is simply great! You really took your time in creating these levels. The backgrounds are very well decorated. I especially like the touch of that mast in Noirlite, which actually moved! That was very cool, I can’t remember seeing that before in a JJ1 level. But what I like the most, is the revamped menu! The Sonic theme of the levels continues in the menu and that was something I never saw before!
I think the overall difficulty of these levels is way too high for the average JJ1 player. It’s a good thing that levels are challenging, but it should not be too hard, especially not in JJ1, where you move so fast and you don’t have that much view around you. If you would’ve created these levels in JJ2 I think it would’ve been a better play, for JJ1 however it’s a total disaster.
Item placement is much better. You’ve spread the collectables well throughout the stages. Because of the hard difficulty however, some extra checkpoints on certain places wouldn’t been a luxury. The (revamped) enemies were great! I especially like the custom bosses at the end of every world.
For the gameplay I already told about issues like the hard jumps in Gravis, getting lost in Labyrinthion and the spears in Fabricant, making the gameplay not very smooth on certain moments, but there is also something I like, which are the 3D bonus stages, once again revamped. Instead of blue gems you have to collect purple UFO’s! And I also like the pinball, of course.

I’ll give you the points for your upload.

  • Eyecandy gives you 20 out of 20 points, with extra compliments for the revamped menu!
  • Challenge/difficulty gives you only 2 out of 20, because of the difficulty being way too high.
  • Item placement gives you 7 out of 10, that’s a bit lower because of the checkpoints which are missing on certain places.
  • Gameplay gives you 20 out of 40, because the gameplay is not always smooth, but I really like the 3D bonus stages and the pinball.

That makes it a total score of 49 out of 90.
For the final rating: 49÷ 90 × 9 + 1 = 5.9. See for yourself if you want to give this download a go…

It had been quite a long time ago for me to play some “home cooked” JJ1 Levels. I found this pack on JJ2Online and decided to try it.
I started to play and I was actually pretty surprised of that custom planet approaching screen of Carrotus! I really liked that and being extra motivated I started to play the first Carrotus level. When I started to play, I mentioned the great eyecandy! You really worked hard on it and I was 100% convinced that I would give you a high score for this pack on JJ2Online!
Sadly enough I thought that way too soon. The first Carrotus level was very frustrating for me to play. Especially because you always have to look around you before going anywhere. You’ve even mentioned us in the level description (“Look Before You Leap”), but that still doesn’t guarantee you won’t get hurt. I think that’s really bad for a JJ1 Level! In JJ1 you’re actually supposed to run fast, so it is really important that the levels are designed so that you can do a smooth run though them!
Overall it was really difficult, especially those shooting hoppers (birds) are very annoying. I really wanted to have more carrots in the stage. But either way: I eventually made my way out and got on to the second Carrotus level.
And now on for the worst part. I really feel bad about that second Carrotus level! I’m frustrated and even quite angry about how it was build, because there was NO WAY OUT of the cave for me! I tried to skip the level using the lamer cheat, but it didn’t work for me. Luckily I saw PT32’s comment about the air board in his review. I finally got out of the cave, reached the checkpoint and was really convinced that I would reach the exit in no time. But I didn’t! The second half was too hard for me. I didn’t make it to the exit and therefore I got completely stuck! At that point I stopped playing.
Believe me when I say I am an experienced JJ1 Player (I play it for like 18 years now), so I know what to do in the game, but this pack is way to difficult to play. Believe me: if these were JJ2 Levels, it would’ve been much better.

Having played only 2 out of 6 levels I have to change my way of calculating my final rating, but here it is.

  • I won’t take the eyecandy in the rating, since I haven’t seen only the 2 Carrotus levels, so I can’t rate the rest. The Carrotus levels have fantastic backgrounds though…
  • Challenge/difficulty gives you 0 out of 20, since I GOT STUCK.
  • Item placement gives you 7 out of 10, the items are good placed, but I reduced the rating from 10 to 7, because of insufficient carrots for such long and hard stages as these.
  • Gameplay gives you 0 out of 40, lowest score possible, because… well… of all the bad things you’ve just read.

That makes it a total score of 7 out of 70.
For the final rating: 10 ÷ 70 × 9 + 1 = 2.3.
NO DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm… Literally Frozen Spring! How suitable for an Easter which was remarkably cold (at least: here in the Netherlands where I live). I found this pack like three days ago and I tried to play it.
The two levels are set in an winter version of the Easter tileset from The Secret Files.
When I started to play, the first thing I saw was that… it was cold haha. But especially in the first level this cold was very well shown. There were a couple of extra lives hidden in the walls. And maybe it was not your plan, but you could clearly see where they were. That made it very easy to find them. A bit too easy actually. However, the glow of the lives shined through the walls, like it was ice shining in the sun. And I actually really liked that to see and find it well fitting for the atmosphere of the level.
The difficulty of both levels was pretty high. It took me three days before I finally managed to complete this package with only two levels! I am an experienced JJ2 player, I played these levels on the Easy setting and still found them difficult! However: I missed a boss at the end of the pack…
And there also are the glitchy swing vines in level 2! And the worst thing is: they aren’t even necessary! I think if you would simply remove them, it wouldn’t be such of a miss.

OK, I’ll give you the points for this level.

  • Eyecandy gives you 20 out of 20 points, there is nothing to complain about.
  • Challenge/difficulty gives you 15 out of 20, that’s a bit lower because of no boss.
  • Item placement gives you 7 out of 10, that’s a bit lower because of the easy-to-find extra lives.
  • Gameplay gives you 36 out of 40, that’s a bit lower because of the glitching vines in level 2, but for the rest all being great.

That makes it a total score of 78 out of 90.
For the final rating: 78 ÷ 90 × 9 + 1 = 8.8. Download recommendation!

Balltyville Sewers

To start:
The sewer. A obvious theme for a level, however there are just a couple of tilesets about the sewer. Now I rate one of those tileset.

Practical: (20 pts)
Practical it is! It is not a very big tileset, which makes it easy to use. And actually it has almost everything you might need if you want to create a level: paths, walls, a sky, vines and even tubes to suck you through (like in Tubelectric)! However: you can’t make a nice detailed background with this tileset. Also things like spikes are missing, but if you create a level with this tileset, you can easily place some spike balls instead.
Result: 12 pts

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
Well… it’s not good. The circle shaped tiles (like the manhole cover and the lights) are not so tight. Also: the soil and road tiles are simple made: just one color with lots of small dots.
Result: 5 pts

Originality: (20 pts)
The concept of the entire level being set in a sewer is very rare on JJ2-tilesets. It’s quite original, but like you can understand from the practical- and eyecandy ratings it’s underused.
Result: 10 pts

Example level: (10 pts)
Example levels in tileset packs might come in handy, because it can show you how to use the tileset if you’re gonna use it. The example level made for this tileset is good! For example: because of the example level I know the white circle with the yellow circle are lights. Sadly enough you didn’t show us what a good boss would be for this level. I think the Tuf Boss (Schwartzenguard) fits best, but what do you think?

To start:
Like Zerg said in the description this level was supposed to be in an episode, but the other levels were not good enough, so he uploaded just this one. Okay, this might be the best level of that episode, but actually it’s not fun to play.

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
Layer 4, the path layer, is really disordened. It’s just simple with random placed blocks which serves as paths and walls. However, there is a background and a foreground, which is great! However: the back- and foregrounds are not great. Later in the level you go down a bit and then you can clearly see the building ‘floating in the air’! The same goes for two of the five street lights. I’ll give you 1 point for the path, 5 for the background and 8 for the foreground, making an average of 4.67, rounded to 5 points.
Result: 5 pts

Gameplay: (20 pts)
Awful. However it’s a bit longer than most of my levels are, it’s horrible. There are no real puzzles (just one key crate near the beginning). The most horrible part of the level is probably the boss battle. What is an seamonster (I’m talking about the Uterus) doing in a city with his crabs? I think the Tuf Boss was better. Also bad: you can easily escape by destroying a block in the down-right corner with an exit behind. And… there are TWO boss enemies when you play on easy (instead of one in medium difficulty)! And although hard has too, I think it was better if you placed a carrot on easy insted of an extra boss. The only good thing about the boss, is you’ve made it tougher with Tuf Bosses and Caterpillars in the walls and it’s also a bit darker there.
Result: 6 pts

Story: (10 pts)
There is no story. So this factor does not count your rating.
Result: N/A

Obstacle placement: (20 pts)
Like I said earlier: the boss is terrible. Also the enemies are bad placed. For example: just a row of Tuf Turtles! And at the boss: just a row of crabs! Simple and bad.
Result: 5 pts

Bonus placement: (10 pts)
I think the bonus placement is probably the best part! However it’s not great. It’s very prominent you placed barrels with bonuses just on the path, instead of in a corner or on a separate platform. Also: the secrets are very easy to find: they’re not covered by layer 3.
Result: 5 pts

A very stupid level which is short, boring and poor. That’s all I have to say actually.

Not so good. The path (layer 4) is well decorated with trees and some sort of cave on a fall. The background however is poor. Only layer 8 is filled.
Result: 9 pts

Gameplay: (20 pts)
Just to be short. The gameplay is pathetic! You can finish the only level in like 5 seconds. Or not, because you can easily jump out of the stage when you exit, causing the game to freeze.

Rating The Queen’s Tower

To start:
The discription says it already. It’s a “huge level with ridiculous gameplay time and high difficulty.” Exactly! But there are some problems and one of them is the horrible music choice (see ATTENTION).

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
Layer 4 is decorated with nice and variable walls. Background layers 5, 6 and 7 however looks pretty unused until you reach top of tower. Once you reach top, you can see stars and moons in the sky. But when you are still down, the background is very boring with just a sky. There is no foreground, so I won’t count this for the eyecandy rating. Path is 17 and background is 9, making an average of 13.
Result: 13 pts

Gameplay: (20 pts)
The game contains two levels. The first level is a humongous tower level. And you might already guess it, you have to reach the chamber at the top. There Devan Shell awaits you with a robot boss. Well, this level is long and VERY VERY HARD. A real challenge which is only doable for the best JJ2-players! I play JJ2 for twelve years now and I was not able to get to the top without cheating! Because I cheated I know there are stars in the highest chambers which serve as warps. Also: you have to collect 600 coins into this stage to reach the highest chamber. If you have collected 200, you can get through the coin warp, but you need a total of 400 more for the next two coin warps or else you’ll die (those two rooms are above a pool of lava). This level is a real challenge, even with invincibility, because it takes a very long time before you finally collected 600 coins! But if you die while you are on your way to the coin warp with your 600 coins, you have to start ALL OVER AGAIN! Very frustrating of course. Also; I don’t think you’ve chosen a good boss. You can see it as the Queen’s guard, but I think Bilsy, Bubba or the Tuf Schwartzenguard are better guards for a castle tower level than a robot. For the rest this level is amazing. The second level however is very simple. It’s a looooooong fight against the Queen! I think it was better if it was a bit shorter. The second level is boring.
Result: 14 pts (changed later, see UPDATE!)

Story: (10 pts)
There is no story. So this factor does not count your rating.
Result: N/A

Obstacle placement: (20 pts)
As I said earlier, this pack is really hard and only doable for the best JJ2-players! Not something to do if you are a starter! I said it can be very frustrating if you die when you already have collected lots of coins, so here is a hint for you. Create an easier version with less coins and obstacles for players which have less experience! And however the second level is boring, the obstacles are good placed there! With enemies to make it harder. The only things which could’ve been better, were the spikes the Queen could yell you on. Later in the fight this will not happen anymore, making the fight a bit easier. Kinda disappointing, but it’s still a tough fight!
Result: 15 pts (changed later, see UPDATE!)

Bonus placement: (10 pts)
After all those long sections I will say this short: all bonuses are amazing scattered! But one thing: there are no secret areas…
Result: 8 pts

ATTENTION:
One thing I don’t count in my rating, is the music choice, because I’m not allowed to rate music in a Single Player pack, because I have to rate the files in question and in this case the files I have to rate are the levels and not the music, so I will not reduce points for the music. I’ll just say the music from the first level is HORRIBLE. It’ll hurt your ears! I think a theme like TR2-Bonus was a better choice. I will not reduce points for this, but take this hint with you for your next upload: don’t use music which hurts your ears!

Total points: 50
Maximum number of points: 80-10(story)= 70
Calculating: 50÷70×9+1
Final Rating: 7.4
Download recommendation:
Why? If you want a long and hard JJ2-level this is just the pack you’re looking for. Just realize it can be very frustrating to lose a life here.

UPDATE:

A new version has been uploaded. Kiranger added two more levels. Both are played after the two levels which were already in the game. The first of them (the third to be played) is Devan Shell. He probably fleed from the tower after his defeat in the first level (with the robot boss). This third level is much shorter with the Devil Devan Boss Fight at the end. And however this new level is not as challenging as the previous two, it’s still quite a challenge to beat it! After that a bonus level follows, with quite hard puzzles! I was not able to do them, so I had to cheat. It are enemyless puzzles, which might be quite tough! The level finishes with a fight against the Bolly Boss, which is made harder with spikes under it. Nice additions! I will change my rating. I will change the gameplay rating from 14 to 17 and the obstacle placement from 15 to 17. This gives you a total of 55 points out of the possible 70. Result? An amazingly 8.1. Download recommendation? YES! It’s even challenger than it was before! Just download it.

To start:
This is a funny level with Jazz, Spaz and Lori Jackrabbit in another Windows XP-window and a virus error-message. Funny idea, but bad performed.

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
I can’t take a look into your level layers (because the file is protected), so the Eyecandy-rating is for what you see when you play the level. The foreground is used for the window! Funny! I give you 14 points for the foreground. The background is kinda disappointing, because there is just a sky and that’s all. So that’s just 3. The path is decorated with exactly enough stuff, like trees, torches and crates. A magnificet score of 17 for the path! The average score is 11,33 points, 11 points when I round it down.
Result: 11 pts

Gameplay: (20 pts)
Moderate. The level is quite long, so that’s good. But there are three big problems when I look at the gameplay. Firstly it’s the XP-window, because it disturbs me when I want to see where I like to go. The second problem is – and I think you already guessed it right – the virus error-message. It distracts me. And the third one is the pit. If you fall in there, you have to cheat, or if you don’t know it, you have to reset the game and that’s very frustrating!
Result: 7 pts

Story: (10 pts)
There is no story. So this factor does not count for your final rating.
Result: N/A

Obstacle placement: (20 pts)
In this levels the enemies and lava-pits are good placed. But also in this part of the rating the three problems in the gameplay count, because those are obstacles too! I think you know which obstacles I mean, so I don’t have to say more about it. Overall the obstacle placement is reasonable.
Result: 10 pts

Bonus placement: (10 pts)
Saw short: the bonus placement in this level is great and it is a very funny idea to place blue gems above the lava! It’s some sort of switch: one blue gem in exchange for some hearts of your health.
Result: 9 pts

Conclusion
If you like to be distracted, this is just the level where you’re looking for. If you don’t, just ignore it and choose another one.

I thought it was a Boss fight training, but when I encountered the first Boss, I think everyone who uses this pack as a Boss fight training is ill.

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
The Eyecandy is fair, however all of the levels are set in the castle. I think it was better if you have chosen eight different tilesets for all levels. I think if you have chosen eight different tilesets, I would give you more of the twenty possible points. But in the fifth level you used a pretty good Castle Eyecandy with those moving platforms. And in the second Boss level there are flying springs. I don’t see this very often. So I think it’s a bad fair gameplay, but you can do better!
Result: 7 pts

Gameplay: (20 pts)
BAAAAAAAD. There are eight ‘Boss-fights’, but I think it are eight ‘Boss Tortures’, because it is almost impossible to kill one of the eight Bosses. In each level Tuf Bosses are hidden behind the wall (so they are out of player’s reach). Maybe it was better if you have used one or two Tuf Bosses, and NO MORE than three! You have used at least SIX Tuf Bosses and that’s the reason why the Bosses are almost impossible to kill.

First it confused us a bit, but when we know how we have to fight, it is a piece of cake. But sometimes it could be almost impossible to jump to another platform. They are far distanced. But if you are an advanced jumper, this level has a good gameplay.

Ammo placement: (20 pts)
Ammo is good placed. You have placed ammo into these levels and you spreaded those items very well. But one pity: there are no secret places…

Carrot placement: (5 pts)
You may look for carrots if you are badly hurt. The carrots aren’t very far away from each other. That’s a bit of a pity: it could be challenging to search for carrots while your opponent is chasing you… with the gun…

Conclusion:
These levels are so good, that it is not necessary to make a calculating for your figure. If THIS is not the best Battle-level from all over the world, I’m an idiot.

To start:
This Treasure Hunt level has a good Eyecandy and it really have the Swamp-theme. But it can cause some trouble, because we found some problems and bugs.

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
I really LOVE this Eyecandy! On the background are trees, bushes and water. I’m amazed how one could make such a good Eyecandied level! But… one problem: as good as each level with this tileset have the same Eyecandy. Please try something new the next time.

Gameplay: (20 pts)
After a pretty good Eyecandy I have to disappoint you with a bad Gameplay. I think it was better if you have tested the level in multiplayer mode first. The level is very small, there is no marked exit (luckily I found it) and the Swinging Vines won’t work in the Multiplayer. And what about the food? It’s useless. So no points for the Gameplay. I’m terribly sorry.

Gem placement: (20 pts)
In the ‘How Many Gems Could You Grab In Three Minutes Test’ I found 106 gems. But for my opinion a good Treasure Hunt level needs at least 200 gems. The difference between 182 and 200 is pretty big and it can take a very long time to get a winner. If you know that in a normal play you have to collect 100 gems. I think you will agree that 106 is not enough. But… I have to tell that the gems are good placed! And not too much blue! (I didn’t even find a blue one in the the ‘How Many Gems Could You Grab In Three Minutes Test’!)

Ammo placement: (10 pts)
Ammo is good placed. You have placed lots of ammo into these levels. My opinion is that you need that. It could be very consume when you confront or chase your antagonist.
Result: 8 pts

Conclusion:
This level really have some shortcomings, but there are also some good things to tell. But I really have to disappoint you: it is not enough for a pass. But I can see you did our best, but I really can’t give you a higher mark than a 4,9. I’m so sorry…

To start:
A Treasure Hunt level with a fair design. But I think the author should have tested this level some more times.

Eyecandy: (20 pts)
The eyecandy looks good. But it have a ‘boring classic’ gameplay with a castle and waterfalls. You should try something new! Furthermore it have some small bugs.

Gameplay: (20 pts)
Layers aren’t used enough, but that’s not really noticeable if you play with more than two players. But if you play with just two players it is pretty boring. It’s also a bit too straightforward and there are not enough secrets. Peter (my brother) and myself don’t like this level so much.

Gem placement: (20 pts)
For this chapter I have a new method: the ‘How Many Gems Could You Grab In Three Minutes Test’. In three minutes I found 182 gems. But for my opinion a good Treasure Hunt level needs at least 200 gems. The difference between 182 and 200 is not so much, but it can take a very long time to get a winner. During that test we also discovered that there are a bit too much blue gems. Maybe almost all gems should be red, 5 may be green and blue ones only in secret areas.

Ammo placement: (10 pts)
