wt thease are just easy pallete edits i baby could do this , well a 5 year old , take it from a pro tileset maker , but stop thease + things or just release them all in a pack cos its not worth downloading a single easy to do pallete edit tileset.

thanks for reading.

But its a ok pallete edit i guess.

Forest Chamber

Okay, lets see…this level was not one of the best levels I’ve played in. Although it seemd fun to play in the tileset I wasnt a big fan in.

Gameplay: Well, the gameplay was pretty even. Although it can get a bit comfusing in the beginning you get used to it real fast. The springs are placed well and evenly and they dont hit the ceiling or anything. May I make a note, At the seeks, jazz can get some of them but not all. Other than that its pretty good. Overall, it had a Good flow to it.
7.5/10

Eyecandy The level looks great. Layers used real well…And I like How you used layer 2. Layer 8…heh…YELLO. The level fits as of right now. Im not that strict on how the tileset fit but I might find some bugs later on. Overall It looks good..No bugs…Tiles fit well.
8/10

Weapon/Carrot placement Hm..well, I can tell you the carrot placement was excellent. One thing about the carrot placement..the +1 carrot’s(2) seemd a bit close the the bases, but thats somewhat okay. The full NRG carrot was placed in the middle as where it should be placed. Good job on that. On the other hand, the waepon placement wasnt as good. Well..the Pu’s where placed evenly and the seek Pu was placed in the middle which is good but the one weapon that threw me off was the Fastfire. Im not reallly a big fan of fastfire in CTF levels. They just seemd not right, there was also to many of them to close toghether.
7/10

Layout The layout is really the most important thing. The layout you choosed seems to be one of the most popular layouts. I even used this layout in one of my levels(not released). I’d like to ssee somethinga it more creative but it seems this layout is also one of my favorites so you got lucky.
8/10

Overall the Level was decent, it was not the best but it is good. This could be a level that you could say “WOW” and in other terms it would be “YUCK”. So it depends.

Score: +7.5/10+8/10+7/10+8/10=7.625=7.7

Edit Heh..He removed the fastfires. I’ve made another edit to my raiting. I’ve come to thought this doesnt rely diserver an 8. Sorry but i’ll have to take that +1 off. Sorry to ruin your perfect score…Look on the bright side, your improving;P

I’m going to say it straightout… don’t bother downloading this. There’s no point. Carrotus Mountain fixes a few masks and adds two or three nice tiles, but everything it does, Carrotus Fix does better. Besides, Carrotus Mountain has a horrendous palette. Three of them. Carrotus Fix does not. Carrotus Mountain just throws in some ripped background stuff, leaves various stuff unfixed, and calls it a day. Please don’t download it.

Clearly there are two rather different reactions to this tileset, and I am sort of torn between them. Looking at in JCS alone, Beach+ is disappointing. You get through the new layout (which is definitely an improvement) and come to a bunch of tiles ripped from half the sets of JJ2 plus my Lagunicus conversion, with no real attempt made to connect them to Beach. Skeletons from Dam Nation and trees from Jungle are plopped verbatim into the set for use in background layers, depending on what sort of freaky level you are playing. It is a mishmosh. Not only that, but the tileset still suffers greatly from masking and art problems which remain unfixed by this conversion. Many of the floor tiles still do not line up well, the masking is sometimes iffy, and more time could have been spent on the layout for the wood stuff.
On the other hand, much like the “Mangroves” Jungle conversion, when put together the tileset somehow manages to look good. Beach has a new look in Beach+ which is not unpleasant, and while Beach+ does not really fix much, it does not break anything either. One could certainly just ignore the random new stuff and simply take advantage of the improved layout, even if the tiles themselves are not fixed. And one or two of the alternate palettes do/es look pretty.
I can’t give too high a rating to this, as it’s really a rather lazy piece of work and has so much to fix. But it doesn’t introduce any new problems.

(.1 point was subtracted for the waterfall. Each subsequent tileset I see using that waterfall is going to receive an additional -.1 point, so .2, .3, .4, etc.)

How does this get rated higher then virtually every tileset (read: TILESET, meaning something actually DRAWN by the author instead of ripped tiles/palette changes) when the author hardly drew anything at all here?

Anyways, the tiles have been reorganized here quite a bit. I never really had too much of a problem with the original layout of damn, but a lot of things (such as slopes) are grouped together for convenience. Others, like the dead tree thing and the bridge are scrambled up and were easier to use in the original :/. There’s also a lot of free tiles left in various places, which could’ve been filled in with something. You also removed some tiles (a version of the sideways spikes), which you shouldn’t be doing when you’re making improved versions of tilesets unless you’re low on room or something, which you’re not.

A noticable amount of tiles were added (such as a warpable backround, gargoyles, and the inferno bg tree), however pretty much all of them were ripped from one place or another (some from even non-custom sets like the cave tiles p4ul made for inferno2.0). Useful tiles such as a larger variety of destructable blocks, upside down poles, hooks and rain were also copied in from one place or another.

Masking in the set was also improved, which is nice. Vines are now usable in damn and a few things are smoother. I don’t know why you kept the backround (both the original and the warpable) completely masked though, but whatever.

There’s quite a bit of palette versions here. They look good for the most part, but the Dark edit might be a bit too dark and the forest version hurts my eyes a bit (why do you need a forest version for damn nation…?). The hot version looks awesome, though.

Overall, this is an improvement on the original. However, a 9.5? The author hardly drew anything in this set, just copied and moved around some tiles, and this is rated around the same as things like Swamps and Egypt? I do like this, and I am planning on eventually using it, but I do think it’s horribly overrated.

Nevertheless, it’s still a good edit, and I’ve seen some nice levels with it already. Download reccomended.

Unfortunately I have to agree with P4ul here, your conversions are almost 100% ripped from all tilesets all over the J2O. Converting isn’t just pasting some stuff from one set, then from the other and so on, like you do, especially when added stuff don’t really fit to the set you are converting.

I don’t like the fact that you don’t even mention whose work is in your conversions. Those people probably were working hard to make something usable, like Violet CLM who made poles, hook and who placed a coral from jj1 to his conversion of Lagunicus, P4ul who made inferno-caves by himself (this is kind of conversion of tiles which means that you are actually modifing existing tiles, but to do this you have to spend some time working on it too). I believe that those blocks are mine, only recolored.

My review may follow later.

Eyecandy

hmm.. I dunno why do some people get so excited over this set maybe because there’s several added tiles? it’s kind of cheap (coughinferno2.0) and it’s not really a reason to raise ratings.

Most of these tiles have been “borrowed” from other tilesets. the only thing he drew himself is the elongated diamondus bush, which is, um, ugly. The whole rest is taken from other tilesets like the textured background from other PJ’s conversions (which he took from diamondus beta) why use this background instead of making a new one instead? (Filter -> Render -> Clouds, PJ). We will also find more (questionable) things, such as the coral from Violet’s conversion of Lagunicus, inferno 2.0 caves, which are slowly getting overused in sets (make them from scratch at least, PJ, because the one you stole has bugs) and background layer stuff from jungle and diamondus.

As for the palettes, there are five of them, two of which are the original ones. For me, the worst one must be the midnight one, which would be decent but the %{color: #FF8000;}ORANGE% wood which look ugly and don’t fit at all. As for sunset, its problem is the background layers. The sand under the shipwreck is also %{color: #FF8000;}ORANGE%. To end with an actually positive accent, I’ll say that the tropical palette is the best one out of all five, the sand and the foliage look great.

Usability

Here the situation is a bit better than in how this looks, but there’s also this one problem that there’s a lot of spare place where you could add more tiles. As for the layout, it’s rather friendly, there should be no problems when finding the right tiles. The mask also has been fixed, but there are still places where it doesn’t fit to itself correctly.

Summary
  • Tropical version
  • Fixed mask
  • Few self-made tiles
  • Lots of free space

Overall
It hurts me to see that people overrate such conversions heavily. Dont forget that there are better conversions than this (DiamB, NOKA’s pack) which have an equal or lower rating. People, think twice before rating so highly

Edit: I saw a level made from this set (not Birdie’s) and know what? The mask is just as bad as in the original one. The soil barely even tiles, mask-wise :/

wow….that’s all I can say.Apart from a review,of course.

PALLETTE-There were a few good points about the pallettes. There were 5 different pallettes including the 2 original versions.
1.Day 2.Night 3.Midnight
4.Sunset 5.Tropical
The additional pallettes had a lot of quality and the texture was the same to the original pallettes. This is the sort of thing that I like. The next bit of text won’t affect the rating at all, but it’s something that I should mention. The Sunset and Tropical didn’t really live up to their names. What I mean is that the Sunset didn’t look like a sunset and the Tropical didn’t look tropical, really. However, these points do no affect the rating.8/10.

ADDITIONS- There were loads of additions.I had trouble listing them and I might have missed a few out,but most of them are there(if not,all of them)

1.Vines,Poles and Hooks PJ7
2.Caves from Inferno
3. Bubbles and Rain PJ7
4.Dense jungle and trees from Jungle
5.Forground leaves from Carrotus
6.Bushes from Diamondus & PJ7
7.Single pieces of coral PJ7
8.Glowing skeleton eyes from D*** & PJ7
9.Backround mountains from Psych
10.Waterfalls from DiamondDust
11.D*** skeletons
12.All neccesary destruct blocks unknown
13.New textured backround
That is a LOT of additions and you should be proud of that,PJ7. Im not sure if they were all needed, but it gives a lot of choice of which tiles to use. This is a great point about this conversion.9/10.

USEABILITY- This is where the rating is improved amazingly. You have fixed ALL the mask bugs! This, therefor, has made Beach an easier tileset to use, without all the annoying mask bugs. I don’t know why I will not give you 10 for this conversion.10/10.

LAYOUT- This is also a good point about the conversion. The Layer4 tiles are around the top and the backround tiles are around the bottom. The forground tiles are in the middle, stretching into the top and bottom. This form of layout appeales to me. However, i don’t think that the layout is perfect.9/10.

GOOD POINTS-
Great pallettes
Loads of additions
Perfect useability
Very good layout

BAD POINTS- I hope that I didn’t have to say this. There are STILL quite a few tiling bugs. You didn’t really make an effort to fix them.

FINAL SCORE- This is truly a great conversion. All the mask bugs have been fixed. The rating for Beach+ is 8.9. I took 0.1 off because of the bad points. I hope you are happy with this rating.

DR-Yes!

wow……i like this!!This is good!
P.S-(note to admins)im trying to be as un-byist as i can.Or in other words,i am being strict.

EYECANDY- This point of view about the level is a very strong point of view. The eyecandy is built up with a lot of care and thought. There are trees placed in the backround so they look far away(change x-speeds for layer). There are some down points though.Firstly, there is a patch of empty space in the middle of the level which has no eyecandy behind it.This gives it an effect that makes it seem empty. Of course you can have patches of empty space in a level, but make sure they are smaller in proportion to the level. This patch of empty space takes up most of the middle section. This is not good if suurounded by lots of eyecandy. Try and make everything in contrast with each other.Mind you, overall, the eyecandy is very good.8/10.

GAMEPLAY-You did a pretty good job here. There are no dead ends, which makes the flow of the level eccellent. The ammo is placed well and is spaced out ok.The variety of ammo is important as well. The variation was good. You can’t really expect much more,really.8/10.

LAYOUT- hmm…..this is interesting..very interesting. There are quite a few platforms, but they are large. The flow of the level helps the layout. This is often expected by reviewers, like me.The layout is overall good, apart from one thing. The flow is one of the only things that makes the layout work. You’ve managed to get the flow working, but the layout should not only rely on the flow.7/10.

RATING-This level did good in my eyes.Try and improve on the down points for your next upload and keep it up! I will rate this level 7.7.Remember,that is a good rating.

Finally, you’ve seen the light and made something I can truly use.

Color 5/5: Lovely. This pack has d*mn in five different color schemes. All of them have good contrast and you even made a custom texture background. Very good, indeed.

Layout 2.9/3: I used the original d*mn tileset a lot with the first level I uploaded on J20 (and two others I never finished but had better quality if anyone’s wondering) and I can say that this is a SERIOUS improvement on the layout. The tileset is MUCH easier to use now. The fixing of the vine is a definite plus. Please remember when you “improve” on a tileset that you include the original eyecandy and not just new stuff (there was a pillar with razor/steps around it in the original, I believe). Aside from that, it’s great.

Originality 1.5/2: There have been other d*mn conversions, but this one far exceeds their color and layout.

Effort 3/3: For once, you have put a lot of effort into making a good conversion. Great job, PJ.

Holyoli, I really like this one!!!!
I just luv it <3 <3 <3

Ok, lets begin with the review!!!

Colors: This is the thing a luv the most!!!
I’ll rate the colors of all 3 versions appart of each other.

Day Tileset:

Ground tiles: They’ve got a more light-bronish tint now which looks great.

Eyecandy Objects: The carrots now look more bronish, i think they got the wrong color now, carrots normally look orange, dont they????
The foliage looks lighter green then first, which looks good cuz the whole version is light and I like the color of it.The flowers look exactly the same as before, which is a minor bad point cuz you could at least make the purple petals green orso and make a second flower (the same) but then with light-blue petals orso, which looks beautiful with the environment (in my opinion).

Background Tiles: The sky is beautifully bright and light-blue which i really like.
The castle looks almost the same as first, which isnt that terrible cause i dont know which color to give it besides the whitey one.

The Blocks: Look exactly same as before, you could at least make other blocks (special guns, ?s and key blocks) and give them other colors (or make more colors) like green and brownish (or a mix of them like in diamondus ß). But thats not that important.

New Tiles:
Rain: It has has a nice color.
Backgroundmountains + water: yes, this looks good, the color is good chosen.
Waterfall: The color is again good chosen and it looks so beautiful!!!!

Overall
As I earlier mentioned, I really like the colors of this version. It mainly uses three colors: Light-brownish for ground and wooden poles etc., light-green for the foliage, and a beauteous light-blue color for sky, water things and mountains.

Evening version:

Everthing looks just a bit darker, so almost the same, but thats ok cuz the rest is looks a bit darker too.
The biggest difference is the light-blue things are now purple, which looks good too, i really liked that too!!!
Thats it for the evening version…

Night (Storm) Version:

Again everything a bit darker (not a bit, but not much either).
And again the light-blue or purple things had the biggest changes, they now look dark-blue which looks good too. The colors are great for making a level IN a mountain.

Difficulty to use and Layout:

Exactly the same as before.
But that isnt a problem cuz I find the layout of the original one easy enough (so youre just lucky I find it easy).

Looks of new tiles:

Everything looks fine EXCEPT the rain tiles…. Do not only make rain tiles with like ehh (let me count) about 20 rain drops in it…. Make tiles with a few drops too so people can choose to make many or few rain drops in their level (not like you did in the example level, you placed the tiles with about 20 drops just on some places… That didnt look well cuz in real if it rains lightly, you dont have a few clumps of about 20 drops in it that are falling appart of each other with plenty of space between them, no, they fall constantly with clumps of like 3 to 7 drops in them….
Next time think of that!!!

Originality and effort:

Hmmm, originality…, well, it was a very original idea I must say, I really liked it much and I think I am sure it will be used much (I think im sure, did you read that????).
But on some things you didnt put that much effort in them and they turned out bad. So next time I hope you’ll think of some things you didnt think of this time…

Did I like it???

Eeeehhhmmm, if youve read this review from Holyoli till THESE THREE WORDS I think you’ll already know the answer….

But for the lazy ones here is the answer: YES I LIKED IT VERY MUCH, I REALLY LOVE IT!!!!!

Download Recommendation???

Uuhhhmm, well, YES OF COURSE, especially if youre like me, then youll like LOVE it!!!

P.S.: The musics where great!!! They fit the versions perfectly (except for the evening one).
This doesnt count for the rating.

Hehe, finally ive almost finished my review, and I’ve come to a rating that looks as followed: a 8.5!!!!!

Yay, W00T, Hurray, clap your hands for PJ7!!!!!!!

You did a great job man, but remember next time to think of more things. Also take more time for making them and/or editing the colors.

Thanks and kudos to you for making this great conversion!!!!

Cya later every4!!!!

Here’s the re-review.

Color 3.7/5 : The color is very good in the day version. The evening version, however, needs a re-do with the background. Purple sky AND mountains AND lake is a little bland, and I find the color hard on the eyes. I think an evening version could do better with an orange color to match the carrots in the tileset. The storm version is okay, but I would prefer it if you put the rain in single drops rather than clumps. It makes the level very hard to navigate. All three tilesets could have used a better color for the carrots. They seemed to be wilting, unless that was your intention. The background trees and castle in the night version should have been darker than they were.

Layout N/A: It’s not any different from the original except for the added tiles. if you can help it, make the next tileset more user-friendly than the original.

@Cooba. I don’t care whether the original tileset is more or less easy to use. There is always room for improvement, and I prefer to rate based on effort.

Originality 2/3: I like it, yet it’s been done before in a sense. The tileset is somewhere between TSF Easter and the original Carrotus tileset.

Effort 1.8/2: This was nicely done. I think you could have touched up the layout of the tileset. Also when you make a tileset you should consider how the background is going to contrast with the sprite layer and other eyecandy.

This level is a HUGE improvement over your last one! :D

Gameplay

It’s nice. You can move quickly through the level. There are just a few dead-ends, but most of them have a PU or a warp/suckertube out =) Too bad at 1.43 it’s a dead end. Maybe some ammo could have been placed there. At 32.17 it still makes you go in a vine and straight into a wall right after, but there are TWO carrots there :P It’s not a major thing. There’s not much to say. It’s just a good, solid level.

Eyecandy

Stil lacking, but this is improving a lot too :) In the bottom of the level, there is some background usage, but in the top there is hardly anything. Also, the bushes in the wall seem randomly placed, or just placed without any thought. But, I like the gem events you put in there :) I really like the waterfall at 74.21. Also, under some waterfalls, you placed Water blocks. You should try changing the ‘Y-Adjust’, so the splashes actually happen on the tiles, not in the air :P

Placement

Nice… they are in nice shapes, and there is enough for everyone. I think the PU’s are placed good and stuff. I would have liked more floating ammo instead of the two barrels 63.20 though. One thing I don’t like, is how the ammo is placed nicely, but the food is placed in huge blocks. Maybe do them just like food. The donuts in a row, maybe like donut-empty-donut or something like that. It would look nicer IMO.

Also, nice music you chose.

Bugs

The floating water blocks and just a dead-end.

General

It’s a good level and you are improving very fast. Just work more on eyecandy and try preventing dead ends or put stuff in them so it’s worth going there. The left side of the level still seems blocky, but anyway. Keep on going.

7.

Maybe nice for Battle Server.

:/

Gameplay: This level’s layout seems random, with random platforms placed. The flow is quite bad. Lots of springs throw you into a wall, throw you into a vine to disrupt the flow and there are a lot of dead ends, but most of these have goodies or a warp (Good =D). There’s a warp around 5.29 but it slows the gameplay down, since you have to stop and get on the platforms. You can’t run anywhere without getting thrown into something. 84.45 doesn’t have floatups.

The copter at the right bottom corner, where the springs lead doesn’t seem to serve any purpose and the spring at 86.26 just throws you into a wall or a ceiling. If it’s supposed to bring you to the gold coin, it doesn’t work (Except if you’re Spaz). You could add a spring at 108.35 so players get send to the vines without the copter. So, the layout doesn’t impress me and the gameplay just sucks.

Eyecandy: Hardly anything. There is eyecandy, but it usually consists of 20 of the same trees next to eachother. At 65.12 there is one ugly background shaped as a block. Not a nice shape and the trees sticking out above it look kind of weird. Around the same area, hordes of bushes are placed rather ugly over the grass ground tiles. Everything just feels so empty and blocky. This really disappoints me, especially since you are in IC.

Weapon Placement: The amount of ammo is good and lots of players could play, but don’t you think 5 PU’s are too many for a tiny level like this? There’s also a lot of carrots, but still I think there are too many PU’s.

Comment: You should really improve your flow and fix bugs and let more people test it. It just lacks the flow and gameplay and stuff to make this a good level. It’s a good tileset and it has lots of EC things. Use them.

Huh… I should like this, because it’s Jungle, but because it’s Jungle, I want to see it done right. And this does not even pretend to have been done right. The author’s only focus was changing the palette a few times and adding a bunch of tiles ripped from other tilesets, leaving totally aside the issue of what to do with the tiles that were already there. Jungle, beautiful as it is, suffers from a number of problems, particularly in the field of masking, and Purplejazz7 does not even try to address these. The tileset, aside from the palette and added tiles, is left exactly the way it was. This is unacceptable behavior.
The added tiles range from good additions (Diamondus trees manage to look nice, expanding the background foliage is a welcome addition) to merely okay (the water is nice but Nick would have done it better, so it’s not a convincing addition) to blah (mere ctrl+c ctrl+v stock waterfalls fail to impress me at this point, and the sucker tubes look ugly in every palette). The empty unsolid trigger scenery tile is a nice and practical addition, although I have no idea what it’s supposed to turn into, unlike its more rational appearance in Diamondus… floating totem poles?
As for the palettes, the day palette is pretty good, actually. It strongly resembles the Diamondus palette, except with brown instead of blue walls, and looks bright and cheery, although maybe a little too restricted in terms of variety. It combines with the new tiles, as seen in the example levels, to create a rather pleasant viewing experience, aside from the rain which is used poorly in the foreground but would be more usable in a farther receded layer. The other palettes, well, they try, but they’re ugly, and there’s not much more to say on that subject. I doubt they’re even tested, as the sucker tube’s flashing light fails to animate properly with the night palette.
If all you want from a tileset edit is a different palette than the same old palettes, then this is an acceptable download. If you want an alternate background for Jungle, then this is an acceptable download. If you cherish the tileset and would love to see someone make it all it deserves to be… you will be disappointed in this “conversion”‘s horrendous masking and the very thought that those sucker tubes could somehow look as if they belonged. You will hope someone else does a better job, or perhaps resolve to do better yourself, next year, when you have the time. But you are disappointed in that which adds nothing but cheer.
