JCS Awards 2017
Results
It's that time of year again - the one every JCSer eagerly awaits! It's been a real rollercoaster of a year, with a fairly strong start followed by a long period of little productivity, and a sudden burst of life in the last month following the re-release of JJ2 on GOG. On the whole, I'd say it's been a good year, and I'm confident we'll have much to look forward to in 2018. For those of you new to the community, the JCS awards are an annual event where members of the community reflect on the best releases from the past year and vote for their favourites. Also as sort of a goodwill gesture, everyone who votes will be put into a prize raffle to win an Epic Bundle GOG code! You must read the rules before voting. They are as follows: 1) In the past you were only allowed to vote for one nomination per category. However, in order to allow more levels to get the chance to be appreciated this time around, you are now also allowed, but not obligated to vote for your second and third choices, which respectively have x0.5 and x0.25 the weighting of your main vote. You do not have to vote in every category if you wish not to do so. 2) You are not limited to voting within the nominations, but you are advised to at least check these levels if you haven't already, in order to make your vote fair. Also, unreleased/unfinished levels cannot be voted for; they must be available for public download. 3) Votes are to be kept private until announcement of the overall results. This is to raise the tension, and also to prevent bandwagoning. In order to vote, post your votes here and then delete the post after you have submitted it, and a moderator will undelete it after the deadline. Alternatively, if you prefer, you are allowed to PM them to Stijn, but bare in mind that your choices will be announced in public once the voting stage is over. Any votes left public will be forcibly deleted by moderation, and your vote may not count. 4) Voting closes on 14th January at 23:59 GMT+1. Votes made promptly after this deadline may still be counted but as soon as a moderator undeletes the posts, any subsequent votes will be ignored. Best Battles:
1: Outgrown - A very good layout with a pleasant, lounge-ish feel and a number of quirks that enhances the level ludonarratively. Probably the most enjoyable level to come out last year, and as such, it gets my vote for the top battle. Also maybe if it wins, FS will finally decide to stop reuploading it with invisible "fixes" all the time. 0.5: Hyperviolence! - A Battle level so solid, it could probably serve as the international prototype over at Sèvres. Whereas FS went for a level to chill out in, PJ gives us a bloody red murderbox with no place to rest (both figuratively and literally). It's a respectable design choice but compared to Outgrown, it sort of lacks flair. 0.25: Riddlehamhope Hill - Not as solid of a layout as the previous two, but still fun and well built. This is probably my favorite from Loon's pack (and also one of the few levels in it actually made in 2017), but then again, I'll always have a soft spot for ruined medieval castles in JJ2. Also a rare occurence of Loon not going full ham with eyecandy. Honorable Mention: Seasons of Diamondus - PJ takes an idea I've been too lazy to develop myself and he does it gracefully, with a small layout that draws people towards the main attraction, the seasonally affected pool of water. It's a nice level though it shows that it was made in a beeline before the GOG release, as much more cool designs could have been done with the shifting seasons idea. Best CTFs: 1: One Froggy Evening - There was no way I would be voting for anything else than my absolute #1 level of 2017. Every time I feel sad about AngelScript coming to JJ2+ several years too late, I play this level and instantly feel better about the community, life and everything else. 0.5: Skyward Showdown - Many years and many iterations later, PJ's massive Odyssey level was released to the world, and almost instantly became the biggest crowd pleaser of Anniversary Bash 19. I really hope this marks the end of the UT2004 soundtrack in JJ2, though. 0.25: Re-Purposed Offshore Platform - FireSworD's CTF levels this decade have me go either "Uh, what" or "Nice, a return to form". Fortunately, this level is the latter, with probably the most "regular" layout FS has ever done yet. Very playable and also atmospheric. Honorable Mention: Hyperspace - This level is more of the "Uh, what" category but I have to respect the mere idea of even attempting to do a level like this, even though the execution isn't my cup of tea at all. Best Single Player: I'm not sure if splitting up one episodic release but leaving the other ones intact was fair for anybody involved, but I don't suppose that matters too much. My full vote goes to Snowball Valley on account of being simply the best SP level of last year, and my half- and quarter- votes go to Down the Rabbithole and Flashback REBORN respectively, on account of being the only other episodes nominated. A honorable mention would go to Jingle all the way for being my other favorite level in HH17 (not counting my own... sorry to be so vain). Best Script: 1: One Froggy Evening - Nearly 5 years after AngelScript was released onto the JJ2 community, the existing scripts can be mostly divided into two categories: ones that simply add to an already "made" level, and ones that actively define the entire experience. This is probably the finest example of the latter, with the level, though neatly designed, being more of a vehicle for Violet's vision, delivered by the script. 0.5: Seasons of Diamondus - Same as the above, though on an obviously much smaller scale. 0.25: Snowball Valley - Not as vitally necessary to its level counterpart as the above nominee (the winterized enemies are nice, but aren't the focus of the level; the floating platforms could have as well been swinging platforms; and the blizzard looks great, but is ultimately only eyecandy), but it still enhances an already very good level. The boss is also a good and creative piece of work. Honorable mention: Icicle Grotto - Considering the amount of sleep that PJ lost over this, it simply deserves a nod. Best Mutator: Best Custom Weapon: Not voting for any weapons here, sorry. It would be rather unfair, considering how I still haven't judged the Top Gun contest (which I promise to do in the foreseeable future, really). My half- and quarter- votes go to Level Guide and h? respectively. Best JCSer: AngelScript has become an inseparable part of JJ2 level design. This fact is reflected in the majority of the nominations this year (and also the past few years) and their use of AS to enhance, or reinvent the JJ2 experience. Many nominees owe their nominee status to their scripts - and as a matter of fact, they owe it to one particular script writer, Sir Ementaler, who is credited in nearly every major upload since 2013. I know for a fact that The Price of Admission wouldn't be as good as it is without his help on the script. Even though his JCS output this year wasn't as prolific as the others, he was behind multiple levels this year becoming top tier levels, and as such, he deserves the best designer award.

This is probably quite late in the game, but for those who haven't voted: I just reuploaded The Price of Admission so that the Jailbreak version is finally functional.
I also hope to see some more votes in general, come on! This is what we JCSers live for

First of all I'd like to say that it was really hard to cast my votes. 2017 was a good year for JCS and even Angelscript. All nominees are good, though, there should be a top 3.. Unfortunately..

Battle
These votes are mostly based on my experiences in JDC events... #1 was an easy choice, it's a level that's always fun to play and I hope we see more levels like it in the future. I've always liked Orbital Barrage, so that was an easy choice as well. #3 was a bit more difficult, but I really love Riddlehamhope Hall's atmosphere and general feel so I felt it deserved the last spot on the list the most. 1. Hyperviolence! 2. Orbital Barrage 3. Riddlehamhope Hall CTF I haven't really played any of the nominees and I'm not a huge fan of the game mode in general so I'm skipping this one. Best Other MP Level To be honest none of these really did much for me. I find it hard to rank them, so I'm skipping this category as well. Single Player It's hard to compare single levels with packs or episodes. My #1 here may be a bit out of left-field but playing Down the Rabbithole made me revisit some long-held opinions I had about JJ2 single player, and that makes it #1 for me. #2 is even better in some aspects and a great level overall. #3 was a difficult choice, but ultimately ended up being the level from HH17 I liked most after Snowball Valley. 1. Down the Rabbithole 2. Snowball Valley 3. Hoarfrost Hollow Level script This one is difficult... the scripts do very different things, and in some cases I can recognize the skill & quality involved while simultaneously not liking what the script actually does from a gameplay POV. I've decided to mostly look at how much more fun the script makes the game for me, since that's what matters in the end. I guess that explains my preference for scripted weapons here. 1. Skyward showdown 2. ELEKTREK PYRAMID 3. Snowball Valley Mutator Difficult category for much the same reason as the previous one. My #1 choice, race.mut may not be flashy but it's just so useful and I'd like to see some sort of recognition for mutators like that. At the same time, weapon mutators look super cool and add some spice to any game in which they are enabled, so I've gone for my favourite one so far as #2. SE's Class Selector doesn't really do a lot more than simply bring the idea of load-outs to JJ2 but that's enjoyable enough that it deserves some recognition too. 1. race.mut 2. Arcane Weapons 3. Class Selector / Jazz Team Fortress Custom weapon I must admit that I haven't played all of these, but there's not enough time left to properly test them, so I'm gonna rate the ones I have played with. It gets pretty arbitrary after #3 so I've chosen not to use my remaining two votes here. 1. Redeemer 2. Roller 3. Zeus Artillery Best JCSer PurpleJazz is my #1 here because he combines quality with quantity; lots of output and most of it is impressive and enjoyable to play. I love Smoke's tileset conversions and the levels he uses them for aren't half bad either, so I'm giving him my #2 vote. And while I'm personally not a big fan of FireSworD's levels there's something to like in all of them, and they're very well-polished in general (to a fault, maybe), so I think he deserves a spot in my top 3 as well. 1. PurpleJazz 2. Smoke 3. FireSworD Most improved Hard to say, since much of last year's output came from the veterans. As said, I really enjoyed Smoke's levels and tilesets, so he's #1 here. I was also impressed by Jelly Jam's levels, so putting him at #2 feels like a no-brainer. As for #3, I really wouldn't know, so I'm leaving that open. 1. Smoke 2. Jelly Jam Last edited by Stijn; Jan 13, 2018 at 04:00 PM. |

Best CTF Level: Skyward Showdown - PurpleJazz Best Other MP Level: One Froggy Evening (BR) - Violet CLM Best Mutator: Level Guide - Stijn Best JCSer: Loon - Rovaniemi, Total Annihilation II: Aftershock - it was so hard to make a decision between the Battle and CTF levels and even though I didn't vote for Loon there TA II is truly amazing and in my opinion one of the best MP packs of all time. That's why I am voting for Loon here. There were several other nominees who had a great year though. Seeing all of the releases this year does inspire me a bit so maybe this year I will actually release something? Most Improved JCSer: Smoke |

We've got the results!
Best Battle Level of 2017 Outgrown - FireSworD (6.5) Hyperviolence! - PurpleJazz (5.25) Orbital Barrage - TreyLina (5) This award in particular was hotly contested. 2017 saw a number of very high quality Battle levels, and with such a diverse range of tastes being catered for, it was difficult to pick a clear favourite. After the dust settled, an eventual winner emerged: FireSworD has once again proven his ability to make exceptional Battle levels, having won this particular award more times than I can recall. Outgrown happens to be one of his finest yet both visually and in terms of gameplay, and has proven to be a favourite during JDC events this year. It seems bigger may well be better these days, as the two runners up for this award are also large, spaceous levels with plenty of ammo! Best CTF Level of 2017 Skyward Showdown - PurpleJazz (9) The Price of Admission - cooba (2.75) Molten Core - Smoke (1.5) Polaris - PurpleJazz (1.5) I'm honored that my level has been beloved by so many of you. It was gathering dust on my hard drive for literally years and I'm glad I was finally able to finish it with style in 2017. Big props to The Price of Admission, which has an innovative, tactical design that's well worth taking out for a spin in a 3vs3. Molten Core is also recommended if you're looking for some messy fun! Best Other MP Level of 2017 One Froggy Evening - Violet CLM (8) The Price of Admission (JB) - cooba (2.5) Isaac Newton's Gameroom - Jelly Jam (1) Probably the most avant-garde level released this year, One Froggy Evening is something every JJ2er should experience. It has absolutely beautiful aesthetics and the gameplay is unlike any MP level you'll have played to date. The concept may not be for everyone, but I encourage people to take creative design risks, and Violet has definitely achieved what he set out to do. Those looking for an alternative gameplay experience to the norm will not be disappointed. Best SP Release of 2017 A Nightmare Before Christmas - Blackraptor (6) Snowball Valley - PurpleJazz / Sir Ementaler (5.25) Hoarfrost Hollow - cooba (3.25) Blackraptor takes the gold medal in this category for the second year running with a behemoth of a level. It manages to convey a sense of warmth, terror and haunting surrealism all within its span. With visuals so unique, secrets so rewarding and gameplay so challenging, this is absolutely recommended to anyone looking for a fantastic Single Player experience. I'm very happy to see people enjoyed Snowball Valley, as it was my first finished SP level in over 10 years. Hoarfrost Hollow is also a real treat for those looking to play something with a bit of a twist over your standard level design, and is very professionally made all around. Seriously, go play Holiday Hare '17 if you haven't yet already! Best Level Script of 2017 One Froggy Evening - Violet CLM (4) Skyward Showdown - PurpleJazz (4) Snowball Valley - PurpleJazz / Sir Ementaler (4) Seasons of Diamondus - PurpleJazz (3) Hyperspace - FireSworD (2) We have a three-way tie! It's a difficult category to call as people have such varying tastes as to what they expect from scripted levels. Go check these levels out and who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to try some things out yourself! Best Mutator of 2017 Level Guide - Stijn (7.75) Random Class Selection - Sir Ementaler (5.25) Arcane Weapons - PurpleJazz (3.5) While not so much a Mutator in the traditional sense as being more of a server utility, Level Guide takes a well deserved top spot as it's been of immeasurable help in JDC events in particular, as it allows people who may not be familiar with a particular level to get stuck in right away. Random Class Selection is also a cool new toy to play with, that can change up the typical gameplay in any level by giving people weapons from the word go. Best Custom Weapon of 2017 Redeemer - PurpleJazz (6.4) Roller - Sir Ementaler (3.5) Energy Blast - Sir Ementaler (3.4) Kaboom! I think Roller is honestly the slickest new weapon this year (who doesn't want to be a ninja?), and Energy Blast is one of the most unique (and would be a fantastic addition to any Race level in particular). Regardless of what weapon you preferred, it's clear 2017 was the era of cool custom weapons! Best JCSer of 2017 PurpleJazz (11) Loon (2.75) FireSworD (2.5) ...I'm honestly speechless. I can't express how ecstatic I am to be given this honour a second time and by such a wide margin. Thank you so much for all your votes, and continue to expect more stuff from me in 2018! Well done to Loon and FS, well deserved runners up! Most Improved JCSer of 2017 Smoke (9.5) Jelly Jam (6) Warren (1.25) 2017 saw a number of JCSers make their biggest splash in the scene to date. Both Smoke and Jelly Jam in particular have left quite big impressions, and both have oceans of potential going into 2018. Smoke takes the honor this year though for his wacky party-sized levels, each with unique visual design due to his quirk of using original tileset conversions in every one of his levels. I highly doubt we've seen the best of either of these two, so there's much to look forward to! Props to Warren as well for making two solid, enjoyable CTF levels out of relative obscurity. All in all I think 2017 has been a great year - it's hard to say how things would've played out without the GOG release, and how much of an impact it will have in 2018, but I'm very optimistic on the whole. With AB20 on the horizon, who knows what may come. Big thank you to everyone for being such a wonderful community Last edited by PurpleJazz; Jan 14, 2018 at 11:52 PM. |

I've undeleted all votes, so if you want to see who voted for what (and why they voted for it, in some cases), scroll up |

While I think some levels deserve more votes, especially some of Loon's, I think the results are mostly ideal.
By the way, the Outgrown that has been played in JDC events is the old version, which has less items, layout, eye-candy, more bugs etc. Please download the latest version. Last edited by FireSworD; Jan 15, 2018 at 03:04 AM. |

Congratulations to all winners and runner ups, and to PJ for pointing out the results!
And an extra cheers to Cooba & Stijn for giving detailed insight to their votes, I loved reading that.

Argh. Should have re-read the rules before voting. Totally forgot about secondary votes. At least I remembered to vote for multiple weapons.
Anywho, all the awards were well deserved in my opinion. Congratulations to all the winners and runner-ups!

My name is mentioned surprisingly often. Is that a silent hint that I should pick up JCS'ing again and get those other "Improveds" out there this year?
Congrats to all the winners and runner-ups and everyone else! I know I'm late to the party, but whatever. |
