Oh yeah, and this is pure originality with scripting. It has been a big work as one can see. And the result is a really fun-to-play gimmick level that works for both battle and bank robbery with multiple custom features. Download recommended.

An amazingly awesome little bugger, especially in that JDC event. Not perfect, but it is as close as it can get when factoring in the concept.

I’ve played this online in its various stages and even during a JDC event I was miraculously around for, as well as asking you to upload this and I did promise to review it, so I went along and retrieved my J2O password and logged on the first time this year just to do that :P

I’ll start off by saying this is some of the most enjoyable stuff I’ve played in JJ2 in recent memory. The level design is pretty simplistic but immensely creative, and wouldn’t be possible without the use of some complicated angelscripting. The ā€œferris wheelā€ itself is amusing, but the most complicated and interesting part of this level to me is the morph beam, which is made out of apples in some complex copter using script that morphs the player when they come into contact with it. I’m not quite sure on how this works exactly still but the point is that it does work well and its awesome.

The flexibility of this level is also great. It can be played with a handful of people or a packed server and would still be a fun experience, and works in multiple game modes. I’ve played it in both battle and bank robbery and can’t tell which I prefer because both ways rocked. This level managed to hold up during a packed live JDC event and basically steal the show. The angelscript also allows for the triggers to be used for some interesting quirks that slightly alter the gameplay of the level.

All this level is, is basically an idea. A great idea that’s been implemented and executed well, that works without hitches and can be altered to fit the style of the game you want to play. While the level itself is a small standalone concept, the behind the scenes scripting to get this working properly is fairly complex and in some ways groundbreaking. It’s really hard to write a proper long review on something so small without repeating myself, so I’ll just summarize that I really enjoyed this, somewhat marvel at how it was executed, and approve of it’s multiple uses and flexibility.

Download this for a good time ;)

On the one hand, this was certainly an interesting level. Violet CLM’s Midigating Factor is one of the most gimmick-oriented CTFs I’ve seen in a while, utilizing fancy sucker tube and spring sequences to shluffle the player around the level and confuse them to no end. Eyecandy is interesting and cool, and makes the level fun to play.

On the other hand, MF also suffers from the Cramped Hallway Syndrome. It never feels very wide open, and it’s been a while since I’ve played a level that made me feel this enclosed and claustraphobic.

Music worked pretty well for the level. It was a sort of quiet and serene piece, accented every so often by a smooth-as-silk violin. Good choice.

In summary, I guess I’ll give this level a 7.0 on the Richter scale. Neutral DL rec, ā€˜cause I haven’t decided what I think of it all yet.

Aha! I see my betatester has been rather busy himself.

Scorpio Key had some great colors, tons of potential-packed tiles, and the example level was cool. I was pleased that the tileset was so well organized, and a lot of new, inviting tiles from other JJ2 sets were provided, i.e. the rope bridges and sunken ship blocks.

The song totally fit, too.

I also thought that Violet’s gravity-defying vegetables were pretty fun.

Perhaps the only reason this upload suffers is because it’s yet another remake of Carrotus, easily one of the most overdone planets on J2O. For the most part, Carrotus remakes drive me crazy, since so many people make inferior and (honestly) poor quality versions.

Not so here. This is a refreshingly clean tileset, it’s redefined how I see Carrotus remakes, and I heartily recommend its download. Somebody’s gonna make an amazing level with this set.

9.0 does sound like a good number after all.

The issue with alternate palettes is that the tileset is 100 rows and I already had to truncate its background somewhat to fit in that space. Creating a more straight up Carrotus expansion with regular palette and background but all the expanded walls/bridges/vines/thorns/etc. — CarrotusV, obviously — would definitely result in TSF-only territory. If there’s demand I guess I could do that, but it wasn’t my top priority.

Oh wow, this is really nice! Finally some decent diagonal tiles (excuse my horrible mess in Carrotus Fix)!
The additions from other official tilesets all work well with the theme.
I wish there would be different palette versions though, seeing as this tileset completes Carrotus in a direction different from mine and zapS’s.

@Leus,

The White Tile can be achieved in certain tilesets by using a solid color tile in a Layer 8 textured background. If the palette of the tile has been appropriately tailored, it will make the textured BG one color, often white or black.

Anyways, I loved this set, for all of the reasons that Leus mentioned. The hole in the floor (borrowed of course from the Haunted House tileset) was clever, the bones were neat, and none of the colors of Aquarius were hard or unpleasant on my eyes.

My one issue with Rage of Aquarius is that the Castle tileset is so overrused. There’s half a million recolors, palette swaps and custom versions of the set that it isn’t too original anymore, and successive versions have to be REALLY good to capture my fancy.

Fortunately, RoA is.

Good tileset, download today, and start making totally awesome levels with it.

I wish I had known about this before I made my JJ1 pack > <. If I ever make a sequel though, rest assured I will definitely be using this. A very important and I would even say essential tool for JJ1 level design that cuts back on a LOT of time spent level editing. To reiterate: it will save you a LOT of time and work…
