I quite like this song but it’s not very accurate in switching from one theme tune to another.

SONG LENGTH: 7:20

At first the song begins playing the JJ1 Diamondus theme normally from 0:00 – 1:25. From 1:26 you will start to hear the Tubelectric background music. At 2:28 the Diamondus theme starts to speed up like when you pick up a “Speed power-up” in JJ1. At 2:58 the song switches over to the JJ1 Tubelectric theme but as I said before it wasn’t very accurate.
The Tubelectric theme then plays on normally. At 5:04 you then start to hear the intro of JJ1 Medivo.
The Medivo song plays the usual way, nothing much has changed here. The Medivo music disappears at 7:13 and then the song slows down at 7:16, then at 7:19 it loops back to the Diamondus tune.

This is my first time reviewing Music so I hope my rating is OK. I’m gonna give this a 6.5 as I like the way you managed to mix the songs together but it’s not very accurate in switching from one tune to another.

SUMMARY

GOOD POINTS

*Great mixing of all the songs from Episode One of JJ1.

BAD POINTS

*Accuracy of changing from one song to another.

RATING: 6.5

Yes. I think it’s worth a listen. I look forward to hearing what the final version sounds like.

BTW, I tested this both in Winamp and Modplug and they both sound the same.

Not a bad level.

EYECANDY

The backgrounds are OK but they do have quite a few tilebugs present. Some bits do not join together properly. The castle in the Layer 7 BG looks a bit weird, as if it’s floating in the air. I think you used a bit too much rain for the foreground, it probably would’ve been better in the BG. I also think the rain moves a bit too slow. Layer 4 is good, though there are a few tilebugs but they are not really noticeable.

6.5/10

GAMEPLAY

The level was quite long, about 10 minutes which is good. There were some secrets that I didn’t find on the first playthrough. The coins were very well placed as I didn’t find them all the first time.

8/10

PICKUP & WEAPON PLACEMENT

Items are placed well, though I did think there was too many Gems placed in one or two areas but that’s not too much of a problem. Weapons were also placed well, though I did think there was too many Toaster +15 Crates in one area. Placement is good, but too many of some items in a few areas. Carrots were also well placed as I didn’t stay on 1 Heart health for too long.

7/10

ENEMY PLACEMENT

Placement of the enemies is great. There was just one area where I thought there was too many. There was about 6 around one Blue Spring, but everywhere else is fine.

8/10

OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

There was a trap near the end of the level which was a bit annoying. I liked the way you used the “Area Fly Off” events to prevent the player from flying out. I still thought that it might have been better to use the CTF Instant Death trick. Aside from the trap there was all the usual important JJ2 obstacles including Destruct & Buttstomp Scenery and Trigger Crates.

7.5/10

TOTAL SCORE: 6.5 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 7.5 = 37/50 = 7.4/10

RANK: C = Good

DOWNLOAD?

YES! Some very good gameplay in this level though the eyecandy needs improving.

@Response to FOX282:

To use the CTF trick. Just place 2 or more CTF Bases next to each other. Find these in “Environment” -> “Objects.” Set the value in the “Team” box to “1” for all bases. Use Layer 3 to cover them up. Also, try placing 2 or 3 sucker tubes above them so that player will hit them slowly, try a “Y Speed” of about 5.
If it comes up with the black screen saying something like “LOSER!” then it’s working.

@Response to Cooba:

Great suggestion. That trick does indeed work better than mine. Unfortunately, the CTF Instant Death trick doesn’t seem to be working in 1.23+
Why is that?

This level is a mess.

EYECANDY

Only one Layer has been used and that is Layer 4. Very few tiles have been used here. Even though such a little amount of tiles has been used, there are still lots tilebugs. There is no background in Layer 8, 7, 6 or 5. Layers 1, 2 & 3 haven’t been used either. The pink background has been placed in Layer 4 which does look messy as that doesn’t tile correctly either. Without a background in Layer 8 the whole level looks a mess.

1/10

GAMEPLAY

As PJ7 says there are no weapons or any pickups. This was designed to be one of those weaponless (is that a word?) levels but there are better ones out there available. Try checking them out and see how it’s done. This level is just a very small rectangular shaped arena with some square platforms. “No Fire Zone” events should’ve been used if you want it to be no weapons as the players can still use their Blasters.

1/10

TOTAL SCORE = 2/20 (1.0)
RANK: F = Bad

DOWNLOAD?

No, because the eyecandy is bad and there is poor gameplay.

ADVICE

1. Try getting your friend to check out JCSRef here: http://www.jazz2online.com/jcsref/
It will tell you how to do various things in JCS.

2. Try including music in the level. Go into Tools and then Level Properties and then type the filename of the music you want in the “Music File” box.

BORED – I dunno why but I just felt like reviewing this.

EYECANDY

The eyecandy in these levels is just great. No tilebugs and great backgrounds. The lighting used in the cave part of the first level looked cool. The leaves in Level 2 look OK but they do move a bit slow.

7/10

GAMEPLAY

While these levels have excellent eyecandy, the gameplay is poor. Levels are too short. Level 1 took me about 20 seconds to finish and Level 2 is just a Boss level which took me about 40-50 seconds to complete.

1/10

PICKUP PLACEMENT

There’s some food but not very much. There’s Gems and Carrots but these are pointless in a level which lasts about 20 seconds. Placement is good but Carrots aren’t really needed in such a short level.

2.5/10

ENEMY PLACEMENT

Placement of enemies is good but there are just too few to kill me and as the levels are short it’s hard to get killed.

2/10

OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

Not many obstacles. There’s 4 Destruct Scenery blocks but that’s just about it.

While this pack does have excellent eyecandy, it’s let down by the poor gameplay. So, it’s no DR, sorry.

Before I begin the review, I would like to point out that this is TSF NOT 1.23. It wouldn’t work on mine. Please fix the version. There is now a V2 of this level included but it’s still not as good.

EYECANDY

There isn’t really anything that special. The backgrounds are good but the eyecandy in Layer 4 does look a bit too repetitive. All I could see most of the time was those Red Bricks.

5/10

GAMEPLAY

Gameplay was OK but the level was a bit too short. The false floors were interesting but these might get a bit frustrating after a while.
The level has been made slightly longer. There is now a new area with lots of Turtles & Sparks to get through but it still wasn’t challenging enough.
A race level is also included but it’s just the same level with no enemies and all the items are still there.

5.2/10

ENEMY PLACEMENT

Sparks were used in this level. There were far too many of them to be found here. I was at 1 Heart Health most of the time. Some were badly placed, in one area there were 4 placed above a Blue Spring which is not good as the player will end bouncing into them. There were less Sparks in V2 this time.

4/10

PICKUP PLACEMENT

At the start there was a Box of Seeker Ammo, DON’T place these too early in the level as it can make it far too easy. There were some Coins but these were a bit useless as I didn’t see any Bonus Warps. There were too many Blue Gems placed in one area, about 15. Placement is not bad but there are too many Gems to pick up. I also thought that there wasn’t enough Carrots here. The amount of Blue Gems has now been reduced to 4 but there’s still a bit too many weapons.

4.5/10

OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

Apart from the false floors I mentioned earlier there was a Warp to find to progress through the level and some test at the top of the level where you had to avoid touching the red bricks. However, these puzzles were still a bit easy. There wasn’t any Trigger or Destruct scenery here either. So, there wasn’t really many obstacles here.

3/10

OVERALL SCORE = 21.7/50 (4.34)
ROUNDED TO 4.3

RANK: F – Bad

DOWNLOAD?

No. There are too many enemies and items and not enough obstacles. You can use it as a Race map but only if you remove the Sparks, as having enemies in Multiplayer is bad.
It is better than Diamond Cave but still not much. I hope V2 of DCave will be better than the previous version.

I have to agree with Booshi/P4ul on this. This level is not worth an 8.0.

EYECANDY

Background is a bit dull. Hardly any eyecandy in Layer 4. It looks repetitive. There’s what looks like a Hotel room in the BG but it looks confusing. Good try on being original.
2/10

GAMEPLAY

The level is far too small. 50 × 35 is NOT a good battle level, though it is a good size for duels, I don’t think it would be used that much. It needs to be bigger. This level would be too easy for a battle.
4/10

WEAPON & ITEM PLACEMENT

Weapons were placed OK but there weren’t really enough. Power-ups were not placed in the open which is good but in a level this small, they will be easy to find. There are 2 Carrots in the level which is not enough.
3/10

SUMMARY

GOOD POINTS

*Item placement is OK

BAD POINTS

*Too small. 50 × 35
*Not enough weapons or carrots
*PUs are too easy to find.

TOTAL = 9/30 = 3.0

RANK: F = Bad (Replaced U with F)

DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION

No. I decided to add that it is good for duels but I still don’t think it would be used that much as there are better duel levels available (I think).

I didn’t see the second Carrot.

Pretty good. The backgrounds look great. I didn’t come across any tile bugs. The effects used on some of the levels were very cool.

10/10

GAMEPLAY

The pack was a bit short I thought. The levels were not really that long or that difficult. I didn’t think there were enough secrets to be found. So the gameplay kinda let this pack down. The 2 Bubbas made it harder at the end.

6/10

ITEM PLACEMENT

There were 3 PUs in LV2 which I thought made it a bit too easy especially because I got the Blaster PU which is the best. There was an RF PU in LV3 which was placed well as I didn’t see it on the first play through. I didn’t think that there was enough food as I didn’t get a Sugar Rush. Placement is good but there’s not really enough items to find.

5/10

ENEMY & OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

Not really that many enemies in this pack. I saw about 20 enemies, that’s not really enough to kill me though. Placement is OK but there’s not enough.
Obstacles were a bit lax. There was some Trigger Scenery used in LV2 but there wasn’t anywhere else. There were some Spikeballs in LV2 also but it just wasn’t enough.

I quite like this set. The masking is not that great though. The tileset is quite big, there are lots of tiles to use. It is missing some of the important basic JJ2 stuff though, including text signs, destruct and buttstomp scenery blocks (* & !). The backgrounds look good. There are 2 different versions of this set; Black and White.
I would find this quite hard to use though. I wouldn’t know where to start.

The author says that he made it in a day and not to expect anything cool. However, I wasn’t expecting anything like this!

EYECANDY

The BG is OK but this was taken from the original Castle levels. The eyecandy in Layer 4 is just bad. Improper use of tiles, most of them don’t join together. As you progress through the level there is a MASSIVE area of RANDOMLY placed tiles with “Under Construction” signs there too. The Knights and Candles at the bottom of the level are interesting but they move a bit too fast.

2/10

GAMEPLAY

Not very good at all. The tons of enemies in the level make it really hard but that is not good. Very little Checkpoints can be found here, so if you die it’s back to the BEGINNING. It’s not impossible to complete, just that it got far too hard and I resorted to using JJRUSH & JJINV a lot.

1/10

ENEMY & OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

As I said before there are tons of enemies here. I saw about 1000+ Floating Lizards, 250+ Fencers, 150+ Ghosts, 5 Bees and 2 Schwartzenguards. Seriously, there is that many enemies.
No Trigger, Destruct or Buttstomp Scenery, so nothing much to say about obstacles.

1/10

ITEM & WEAPON PLACEMENT

At the start, I see 10 Coins which have no use whatsoever, there wasn’t any Bonus Warps. As I progress through the level, I see about 25 RF, and 10 Electro Blaster PUs. There were not enough Carrots in this level. No Food or Gems at all, but as there are TONS of enemies, you could get items from them.

2/10

As I have about a 90% or more chance of dying I would say this is hard.

This is a fantastic tileset. I’ll post a review tomorrow as I can’t get on the computer right now.

If any of you are wondering how I typed this, I did it with the Wii Remote. Stupid predictive text.

EDIT: Here it is.

This has got to be the BEST Industrius conversion I have ever seen!

TILESET: JJ1 INDUSTRIUS 2005

MAIN REVIEW

The first thing I see is that all the tiles & objects from the original Industrius are there, including the fast moving rockets and the fast moving platforms. The pink background is missing but I don’t think that really matters as I really like the Layer 8 Textured BG. I tested it out in a level and it looks GREAT! All the original adverts are there too including the Gravis Gamepad, Epic Pinball, One Must Fall and “Enjoy Epic.” These can be animated just like in JJ1. There is also some additional stuff including:
*Vines
*H & V-Poles
*Scenery Blocks – * & ! – I think it could have done with some other blocks including the Keyhole, blocks with a * with a number next to it and maybe blocks with the Weapons on them.
*Trigger Scenery – the lined block.
*New text signs as well as the original JJ1 signs.

Also included is an Evening version, where the only change is that everything has been given a shade of orange. I do think this version looks good but I’m not really too keen on it. I prefer the other version, this won’t affect the rating too much though.

Next, I will now talk about the layout and ease of use of this set.
The layout is SUPERB, tiles are very well organised and not jumbled up. The set is easy to use because you can easily find the tiles you want. Tiles can be animated easily.

Now for the masking, all the tiles are masked correctly, no jagged edges or any tile bugs like that.

EXAMPLE LEVEL (not counted towards rating)

Just a small battle level showing what is possible with this tileset. There are 2 other mini arenas you can choose from.

CONCLUSION

Now for the rating, I’m gonna give this a 9.0 as I love this tileset but there are still some things that could be added or improved such as more scenery blocks. Evening version is good but I don’t think I’d use it as much as the other version.

Electro Rabbit is Benchmark’s first level. Unfortunately it is really not that good.

EYECANDY

Not good. Tiles are used incorrectly in lots of places. Background looks OK but that is the only good bit about the eyecandy. At the far right of the level was a big load of RANDOMLY placed tiles.

2/10

GAMEPLAY

This level was very confusing. I finished it in just under 2 minutes, far too short. There were Checkpoints everywhere. I kept finding one about every 5-10 seconds. I had no idea what I was supposed to do.

1/10

PICKUP/ITEM & BONUS PLACEMENT

There was Seeker ammo, Food, 1UPs and PUs (PU = Power-Up) everywhere you went. There were far too many Gems in this level. OVER 2000 could be found. The Bonus Area was very badly placed. There is a 100 Coin Warp to it, BUT you could get in WITHOUT the coins anyway by making a long jump over the wall at the top.

1/10

ENEMY PLACEMENT

There was too many enemies to be found here. They were badly placed and were not enough to kill the player.

1/10

OBSTACLES

Not very many at all. There were some Trigger Crates but all they did were make some useless blocks appear. Not even any Destruct/Buttstomp scenery was in this level.

1/10

SUMMARY

GOOD POINTS

*Background looks OK.

BAD POINTS

*Too many Gems, items and PUs.
*Randomly placed tiles at far right of the level.

COMMENTS & ADVICE

*Spend more time when making a level. It can take about 2-4 weeks to make a perfect level.
*Think about the eyecandy. Try to make the level look nice and more pleasing to the eye. Don’t just randomly place tiles in one area.
*Don’t place too many Gems, Weapons and items in the level. This can make it too easy otherwise. Try to make it harder for the player to find new weapons and items.
*Don’t upload music already in JJ2.

@Benchmark: No problem! :) JCSRef may also be of some help to you. There was a How to JCS site but that’s gone.

I have played some bad test levels before, but this one was the worst. I’m sorry but this was way too short. There was only 2 levels. The eyecandy looks like it was rushed, no animated tiles and only Layers 4 & 8 were used. The Layer 8 BG looked boring. After completing the 2 tests, I was in a room with loads of Gems.
You also included a Sugar Rush Remix in the zip, it’s good music but this was NOT your remix. I couldn’t see the point of that since the music wasn’t used in the level at all.
Another thing that puzzles me is that this has been submitted as a Treasure Hunt level. Huh?
This review may be short, but I don’t think there was really much else to review in this test.

NEOBEO’S FIRETRUCK

EYECANDY

Not the best eyecandy I have seen but I still like it. Backgrounds look good. No eyecandy bugs anywhere! It may not look impressive but I don’t think it really matters for a puzzle level.

8 OUT OF 10

GAMEPLAY

Now this was probably the most interesting gameplay I have ever come across in a JJ2 level. There are various puzzles to solve. The main objective was to complete all the puzzles and get to the end boss. I think the boss could have been made more challenging though, the arena wasn’t really that big. It took me about 5 days to figure out what to do in this level. Not only do you have to find keys and switches, but you have to equip yourself with some knowledge of the bugs in JJ2. I won’t mention them here as it may spoil it for someone playing this level. Gameplay gets 9 because the boss arena was a bit easy. Somehow the Keys disappear even though the “Trigger Zone” event is on the Key but the “Trig Scen” ISN’T! How is that possible?

9 OUT OF 10

ENEMIES/OBSTACLES

There was no enemies except the boss at the end. There are lots of obstacles that you have to get through by finding keys and switches. There were no bugs with any of the obstacles.

10 OUT OF 10

PICKUPS

There was not many to be found here but since there was no enemies and this was a puzzle level, only the items that were needed were to be found. There are some PUs and lots of 1UPs, you’ll figure out what they are for. I know that there was not many pickups, but they were placed very well.

I quite liked this episode but there were some annoying bugs.

EYECANDY

I know the tileset was made in MS Paint but I thought it looked pretty good. The backgrounds were not too bad either. I liked the way the player went through the dark areas, I thought that was pretty cool.

7.5 OUT OF 10

GAMEPLAY

The main objective of this episode was to find a hidden artifact in the Egypt Temple. The gameplay was pretty good, but it was annoying typing JJMORPH every 1 or 2 minutes. It would have been better to have a re-generating Morph pickup so that I could change to Jazz, Spaz or Lori. For example, if I come to a point where Spaz is needed for his Side Kick move, a re-genearating Morph would be best here. There were also some puzzles in each of the levels, some of them I couldn’t really understand but I did like the others, including that one where you had to take a note of the position of the Scarabs. I wrote it up in Notepad and I thought this was a nice puzzle.

7.5 OUT OF 10

ENEMIES/OBSTACLES

As I mentioned before, there are puzzles that have to be completed in order to proceed through the rest of each level. I found the custom Wolf enemies quite annoying as I thought they were moving too fast. I like the use of the spikes, very cool. I also liked the way the Ice Blocks melted when shot with the Flamethrower.

8 OUT OF 10

BUGS

There were some really annoying bugs in this episode. I’ll list them here:

1. The 2 Springs at 142,46 and 143,46 in Floor 3 of the first Pyramid didn’t bounce the player high enough.

2. The 2 Springs in the Platinum Sarcophagus (is that how you spell it?) at positions 61,23 & 62,23 on Floor 1 in the second Pyramid did not bounce the player high enough.

3. The second Rock puzzle in this episode did not work too well, I stacked all 6 Rocks on top of each other but when I used Spaz to kick down the blocks I couldn’t get through because the top Rock was too high for Spaz to go under the platform.

Before I opened this, I was expecting another pointless edit. BUT, it was far from pointless. I LIKE IT! I think this can be improved some more though, it could probably do with some extra scenery blocks. I’m talking about the blocks with the Keyhole, “?”, Weapons, and also the Blank ones. I like all the added features including the waterfalls, I know they are overused but I still like ‘em. I think the tiles on line 71 would be better on line 37 to go together with the Castle. I dunno if that can be done, but if not, then don’t worry about it. There are 6 different versions of the Carrotus set that can now be used. I do find Carrotus quite hard to use though because of the tiling and stuff. Now for the rating, I am going to give this an 8 because I like this set but it can be improved. There is now a new Diamondus version now available which looks great. I like the Diamonds and everything in this new version. I will now award an extra 0.2 points for the Diamondus version, making the rating an 8.2!

Hehe. Nice discovery. I like this tileset, I’m using this to make an SP level right now.

EDIT: It’s a hoax. I’ll cancel that level I was making with this set. Besides, it’s missing a lot of the tiles from JJ1 Diamondus.

EDIT 2: I decided to carry on making the level after all. I know it’s missing some of the tiles but I thought I’d make a level to see what it would look like.

EYECANDY

The backgrounds look OK but they are not the best I have ever seen. It’s good that you used your own tileset to make this but I wasn’t really that impressed with the eyecandy. Some of the tiles looked a bit grainy to me.

GAMEPLAY

The main objective in this episode is to rescue at least 50 Rabbits from Cramp Farms. Sorta like Abe’s Oddysee on the PS1 where you rescue slaves. There is 3 TNT right next to 3 of the Rabbits you rescue which is used in the end level. If you fail to rescue enough Rabbits then the episode is over and you end up in a room saying that you didn’t rescue enough rabbits.
It did get a bit repetitive in this episode though, some of the levels were EXACTLY the same and this did get a bit boring. I thought that there wasn’t enough Save Points in some of the levels. I spent about 10 minutes in LV 2 and then died and I was right back at the beginning.

PICKUPS

There are some Gems and food. There are also some Carrots to be found but there wasn’t really that many to be found. TNT could also be picked up for use in the end level as I mentioned in Gameplay. The items were placed OK but I didn’t think there were enough Carrots to find, I was at 1 Heart health most of the time.

ENEMIES/OBSTACLES

I liked the idea of the custom-made enemies (the robots and spiders), it adds more originality than just using the standard enemies. There were some obstacles that you had to get through by finding a lever/switch. No trigger crates. However, there wasn’t really that many to get me stuck.
