It's certainly an interesting level. Plenty of space to play around and go on optional adventures. Perhaps too optional—you can run and copter ear through most of the level. The final bit with all the wind is just a miserable slog. But the rest is nice if you're in the right headspace, or are just willing to play along with unenforceable rules.

A challenging level where you battle against the the many wind events more than anything else. The carrots and savepoints make it forgiving enough. The aesthetics portray a blizzard excellently, and the module music is fitting and actually written for this level. The boss was interesting yet quite easy if you have the Toaster PU.

Hey I really like this episode.

I’ll give you 7.5/10

Also, I would remake it using IC tilesets from Impressive Flashback and even add more MLLE layers.

Honestly, I can’t tell why this level has such a high rating. I just couldn’t enjoy it: Bad visuals, frustrating level design, unfair deaths et cetera. I won’t go too much into detail, long story short I was very underwhelmed by this level.

A very challenging level. Or, probably, it seems so to such a butterfingers as me :D

Well, the level is challenging and at the same time it’s rather small so that’s why it isn’t tiring. What I loved most of all is a new gameplay the level offeres. You have to climb the mountain in spite of the strong winds. Obviously, it would be pretty easy to accomplish if there either were no pits or no wind. However, lots of wide platforms would prevent your falling from the top of the level to its bottom.

When I finally reached the top of the peak and encountered a boss I was surprised by the fact that boss restores his health after you fall down from the battle area. I wondered whether it was a bug or a feature. Only after accomplishing the level I took upon myself to read the readme file that explained everything. Anyway, it is clever and inventive usage of game’s limitations of the distance where the object can be active.

Nice, original and challenging level. Download recommendation!

It’s an average-sized level which uses a slightly-modified original tileset, underwater part and has a boss (which is situated under the water). Let’s observe upsides and downsides of this level.

PROS
I’m always glad to see singleplayer levels that use skillfully-modified original tilesets. Good-looking recolours and eyecandy bring peculiar atmosphere to any level and that’s exactly what I liked most of all in this work. It’s rainy out there, not “rainy cats and dogs” but raindrops group in jets and it’s cool. The background uses slowly moving translucent picture of sky which is supposed to represent fog, as there are tiles behind it, but sometimes it looks like the cave has glazed windows.
Some enemies are placed into the walls, Tuf Turtle at 174*14 pretends to have a workout on a treadmill :) Some enemies hide behind the waterfalls, so it can be difficult to notice them sometimes. I aslo liked the secret placement and those hidden tunnels in the walls.

CONS
If eyecandy is what I liked most of all, gameplay was the most annoying thing.
I was irritated by the necessity to look for a warp to proceed further. Once I had to waste several minutes before I noticed two arrows pointing at a tile between them. There are dragonflies in the level, but bees could make the gameplay much more challenging, though I actually hate these nasty enemies that respawn from bee hive all the time. The blocks with exclamation points on them are used as trigger-blocks, this is widely used by lots of JCSers (and even JJ2 developers, remember Easter levels?) when they are too lazy to simply copypaste a block with a keyhole from one tileset to another. I won’t deprive points for that, as I have to rate the level, not tileset. Utherus can be found in its natural habitat- under water, which surely makes the boss fight harder but it could be a way more challenging if the arena wasn’t so big that you can escape from the boss to take a breath and collect some ammo. The boss tune is too calm and peaceful, so you can’t feel that it is the most important part of the level where you have to face the strongest enemy. More than that, the player has to backup original boss1.j2b file what is definitely not very convenient.

CONCLUSION
I would like to give this level at least 8.0, as I adore this picturesque world of a cold underground lake, but due to described gameplay issues I’d give only 7.5. In other respects the level is nice, and I can recommed it to all the singleplayer fans out there.

This may look cool but is completely unplayable. The layout consists of seemingly randomly placed platforms and the gameplay is based on maintaining control over a single area that contains both the level’s only powerup and its only carrot. Needless to say, your start position might settle the match. Also, the masking is extremely inconsistent.

Though there’s an overriding sense of familiarity throughout, these levels are generally designed well for the most part. It’s nothing particularly revolutionary, but it’s a decent contribution to the SP scene.

To be honest I didn’t think I would like the pack when I first played it. I didn’t enjoy the underwater and the castle level that much. But luckily the first level was quite fun and the last 2 level were easy to enjoy especially “Emerald Everglades”. It reminded me of Moonbeam Moore minus the swamp and plus the items. What surprised me though was how easy the last 2 levels were compared to the previous 2 (the water level only seemed hard because you can’t move fast in water). Easy doesn’t mean that you can just run through the level, I just mean if you were cautious enough you didn’t lose health too often and the boss was challenging but not too hard to beat.
Rating:
Triton V: As I’ve mention it was quite fun, though there were no enemies. 7.5
Carrotus Sky: Not much to say here. Short and challenging though it can get annoying since you move fast which make it harder to go carefully. 5.5
Carrotus Castle Ruins: First level with actual enemies. It has good eyecandy but the level itself is rather difficult because of the spikeballs being overused. Still it’s quite decent. 6.2
Carrotus Waterways: Like I’ve mentioned being underwater makes it harder due to the speed. Another decent level. 6.5
Carrotus Everglades: My favorite level. I like the tileset anyway but when it’s used well it will result in good levels such as this one. I found some secrets on this one as well. Also maybe the easiest level (that has enemies) but requires you to be careful. 9
Carrotus Fortress: Final level and the 2nd best. It was also funny to put “meh” in one of the text since you could describe a whole level in a review with using this word. Difficulty of this is similar to the previous level. Boss fight was good. 8.5

Though the design isn’t really for JJ2 because it’s a bit too tight at certain places but it’s really cool to replay these levels with JJ2. Also it’s possible to find secret places thanks to JCS so if you still have JJ1 you can get higher percentage. All in all it’s really fun and a lot of work seems to be put into it. End result a cool JJ1 conversion which is definitely worth a try.

Well, this was the only level I didn’t play that was nominated for JCS awards, lets see if it’s worth the title.

Eyecandy
I’m not sure what the theme is supposed to be, and some of the ec style has tilebugs (incomplete tiles), making it look wierd. Using tiles that were meant for layer 4 being used in layer 3 in some places is somewhat annoying when you play the level for the first time. Hint: Don’t use layer 4 solid masks for EC on other layers, it’s confusing, unless you use contrast. Most of the ec functioned alright, despite being nothing special. I guess it’s supposed to feel post acopalyptic, though the background doesn’t suggest much. In a nutshell it feels random for me.

Gameplay

It’s somewhat unique, though a shame it doesn’t make any use of the frogs ability at all. This then basically makes the entire level a handicap gimmick. Gimmicks can be great, though having nearly no interaction with the environment or enemies, makes it feel a bit lacking. I could see it having more potential if it wasn’t just about dodging. Interaction is possible as a frog, just more limited. On the postive side, this level isn’t all that linear and provides an interesting challenge for a while.

There’s also the layout, which bothers me. You may die because of having no idea what is down below, and no clear indication of pits. And once you have finished it at least once, you can skip some parts of the level by falling at the right places, specifically, near the start of the level where you go down. There’s also some useless maze deadends. Gems are useless if you don’t want to aim for a high score, and even so, you’re more likely to get a high score from a sp pack than a single level.

The boss arena is a little too time consuming, though quite creative. To win this, I practically stayed in the bottom right corner, and jumped when he used his attack. It seemed hard until I used this strategy. Though admittedly, I had easy mode on.

Music
For a start, the volume of the samples is too high when it has led into the main thing, and the backing feels overdone. It starts off okay then BNNBBMBMBBNBFFBFBNBNBMFF-F-F-F. It eventually irritated me so much (and slightly ached my ears) that I had to change the music. I don’t really know if it fits, because if I had to change it, then I’d rather not listen to it. The boss music is good, though.

Other
What’s with the ambient sounds? To be blunt, they were overused because they were everywhere. They distracted as well as annoyed me so much I had to mute the sound, which I have never had to do before. Why does it sound like I’m in the middle of a noisy factory? I thought I was out in nature.

Conclusion
For a little different kind of sp challenge, you may want to try this. Completing it before will give you a significant advantages of playing the level. Some stuff is annoying, but fortunately, you can mute or change it.

I really enjoyed your level. Though the lack of health made it a bit hard despite the fact that it was quite and easy level. The boss was a bit tough to fight underwater. Apart from that I must say it’s worth downloading this level.

EDIT:
I remember that I couldn’t write a full review because of some kind of error on the site when I first checked this, but now I’ll do it.

Eyecandy: I really liked the eyecandy in this level. It really looked cool. All layers were used. I found one tileglitch though at (12;32) though it’s nothing important and hardly noticeable. Also I think the tileset you used was a perfect choice.

Gameplay: The trigger part was a good idea. I found it really enjoying. The secret places were well placed and visible most of the time. Some were tricky though but nothing impossible.

Pickup placement: Apart from coins I found all the pickups that a normal single player level needs. They were placed well and as I’ve mentioned there were quite a few secrets with these pickups. Most health carrots could be found there actually. RF missiles were useful against the boss.

Enemy placement: They were well placed in my opinion, especially the dragon flies. Since there were some places with small moving space, ground enemies could also be dangerous if you moved too fast. Difficulty was also appropriate since the amount of carrots made up for the little health you lost.

Music: I liked the music, it went well with the level though I found it a bit loud compared to the effects of the game but who cares anyway.

Download definitely recommended. This is fun level that you will enjoy.

So, a small singe player level.

For the first look, i tought it looks cool, it has a good – and somewhat original eyecandy. I love that it’s covered with a black transpalucent layer, it obviously fits with the name and feel. Actually i liked the background, was also a great point. By the way as it has to come, there are bad things. one is that the things moving with you are somewhere a bit empty, there are some tilebugs (that could’ve been noticed if you go trough the level like 1-2 times and look for it). the feeling of it is fine, but in several parts it makes the way uncertain. After some deaths it wasn’t that but it’s still confusing.

eyecandy: 21/30

Enemies, flow, pickups and other droughty things: I started it and i fell down close immediately, i tought i will die, then i tought i will have to climb back. uh… i didnt get how it was meant to fall until i played like the 3/4 of the level. The first thing came in my mind was the tree that was used as masked, unmasek bg and unmasked fg too. It was deceptive. Anyway, after realising what’s going on, playing became fun, There were some unnoticable cactuses, some suprising enemies, it was the thing that hurted, because most enemies weren’t too hard to kill. the whole thing wasn’t really channeling. There were a great amount of toasters what i loved. Gun6 is the weapon of SP levels. There were a deal of food, once i got a sugar rush (What ended up a werid way, i ran into the Tuf Boss immedietly killing it. it was rather funny. Also it is shootable and killable, next time dont put unactivated bosses in the way. it even hurts if you touch it.). Mainly the way became clear after a time. it was okay. the ending was hardly understandable, i mean i always got warped to the tuf boss, i could roam to other bosses though. Maybe the channeling thing was not to fall off the trees, It happened a lot with me. The bosses werent that hard (for me). it was rather short, for the time i understood the system of the level it ended. There were unneeded savepoints, one could be enough in the whole map. the others should only be in easy (and some extra carrots too). The hard mode was right, with the more enemies. Dont take these as blaming, i’m just focusing on the things to mention and focus on.

gameplay: 28/40

Aboat the externalities, the music fitted well, the name is appropriate.I like the Jungle gods thing. What more to say aboat it duh.

externalities:10/10

I think it was somewhat original, low used tileset, with this dark cover, new typed bossfight. I could even call it “find it out” as it has lots of strange happenings.

originality: 13/20

Overally: Not bad, but there is where to improve.
Rating: 72/100 -> 7.2 and a DR.

Cold Flash is a nice level with the classic Diamondus tileset in ice cold style.

Eyecandy is used generally well, especially at Layer 6, 7, and 8, but I felt there was some missing, like diamonds in the wall. But then again, the rest of the eyecandy is good. The music fits too.

The gameplay was solid. Some enemies were too easy to kill and others were harder to kill. The items were placed well, but there were too much seekers which made the level and, thus, the boss fight rather easier. Speaking of the boss fight, I think the Full C made it too easy, still a nice a boss though.
