A pretty good level pack with a few really good levels (Colonial Castle Ruin and Delta Halo) and a few good levels with some interesting ideas. For example I like the tileset usage in Far From Reality. Snowy Slim Shore is a pretty good level with some good eye candy. Unknown Ruins has a pretty simple layout that reminds me a bit of my old levels.

A very good and also original level by PurpleJazz. It uses a tileset that is really limited, but he made a really good theme out of it with fitting eye candy. The layout is pretty unusual, but very good. The level should play well in small team games, not sure about JDC events. Also, really nice script and level name (xP)

Download recommended.

A typical Rag level that doesn’t have anything new or original (except that the tileset hasn’t really been used yet) It’s the kind of level we need for the Bash, good gameplay, good size for a Battle level and good placement with a lot of fast fires like more levels that Rag has made in the last few years. Download definitely recommended.

While this is not one of Snooze’s best levels, it’s still pretty good. The eye candy is really good.. very good usage of the cave tiles. The layout is pretty simple but easy to learn. There is not that much ammo, but it respawns quickly so there will always be enough. Overall, just another good level by Snooze. Download recommended.

There is way too much ammo.. there are almost no places without ammo and there are too many Power-Ups. is too much. Also has too many carrots. One Full NRG and one +1 or 2 +1s would have been better. The layout is pretty simple and linear and one way to the base is never good. The eye candy is good but nothing amazing. Download not recommended.

A level that people could call a classic by now. It’s one of the best event levels (at least in CTF and DCTF) It’s always fun to freeze the spring and let someone fall with the flag (hopefully not one from your team) It also has a really good flow. I don’t think I will get tired of playing this level in an event.

This level is a bit underrated so far in my opinion. I like the layout; it’s different than a lot of other levels we see nowadays. The eye candy could be better but with this levelname it’s good enough. I suppose this plays well in Team Battle as well. I can only hope your next levels for XLM will be of the same (or even higher) quality.

The two levels that Faw made after Planetary were no exceptions. With this level he shows that he can make good levels without spamming EC. This level has a classic feel, but if it was made in 2000 I think it wouldn’t become very popular. So even if it looks old it’s still ‘modern’ in its own way. Download recommended.

tropiCCo asked me to review this. I rarely review levels nowadays, and I’ll keep this short.

This is a nice little level with a good background and good eye candy. The layout is not too special but good enough. This level shows the potential that the creator has, and these kind of people are the ones that we need in XLM. Good job.

I’m not going to write a long review, I’ll just give some comments on every level.

Battle levels

Death, Decay, Rose, River is a level with a long name, and it’s one of the bigger levels from the pack. It’s not really an open level, but there are lots of holes and the middle of the level is really open. The eye candy is pretty good, especially for the given tileset. In a TB game I played with some other people I noticed that there are some camp places like the top left. This level has 2 carrots, which surprised me because I thought there were 3. Maybe that could have been better, but it’s good enough as it is.

Then comes Lut Gholein. This is another pretty big level (170×64) which is also really open, but it doesn’t have as many platforms as the previous one. There are less routes here, but I like this one more than the previous. The hole at the bottom could be frustrating though. And the eye candy is really good here.

King of the Clouds is the next level, which uses an underused tileset (lots of people asked what the tileset was when they saw the level) and it’s been used very well. This level is a bit smaller, and has 3 carrots and 2 Power-Ups (no Toaster PU, which is unique because almost every snz level has one) The ammo placement here is good, though there are lots of seekers (especially in the top left!) This level was pretty fun to play as well.

Then comes The Curse, but I already reviewed that level so on to the next one.

Hornet Hive is a level with a unique level design. You think it’s the end of the level, but the tube at the right side goes to another area. This level is more linear and more campy than the other levels, but it’s still pretty fun. The tileset use is great. With a limited tileset Snooze managed to make original eye candy. I don’t think anyone is going to beat this tileset use.

Now on to the CTF levels.

Steam Machine + Landscape is another level that was uploaded before, but I didn’t review it yet. This is a quite big level with a pretty simple design. It’s also unsymmetrical, but it seems balanced enough. The tileset used is BioWinter, another underused tileset. Yet again snz used the very well. This level has one Full NRG and one +1 carrot, and they’re pretty close to each other. The level has 2 Power-Ups, Toaster and Bouncer.

Neufrlagar is a small CTF level that uses Egypt, a really hard tileset. But as we know Snooze can use almost every tileset well, and in this level he used the tileset very well. This level has 2 Toaster Power-Ups, and 2 +1 carrots. Every base has a Toaster Power-Up and a +1 carrot near it. There is also a Full NRG, which is closer to the red base. A part of this level was made very quickly so I couldn’t really say much about it. But this level is probably meant for duels, so it doesn’t matter too much.

Then comes another level with Snooze in the level name (after City of the Sn00zE, Klassieker F0R the Sn00zE, room of the snooze and Restplace F0R SN00ZE) This level is called Grave of the Snooze. This is another level with a pretty simple layout, and it’s about medium sized. The eye candy here is good enough for the given tileset. The level has 2 +1 carrots and 1 Full NRG. The Full NRG is quite close to the +1 carrot at the right side. This level doesn’t have a lot of ammo at the top middle, but there is a Bouncy PU there that you need to get by using Gun9. The level also has 2 Toaster Power-Ups.

Now on to the last level. Junkyard Blues is probably the smallest level of the pack, and it uses the new tileset called Aftermath. This level uses the Toxic palette. The tileset has been used very well, and it will be hard to make better eye candy with this set. In this level the bases are close to each other, but this is a duel level. The level has a ’3-floor layout’ There is a bottom area with the bases, some ammo and a Bouncy PU, a middle area with 2 Seeker Power-Ups, some ammo and a +1 carrot, and the top area has a +1 carrot and some ammo. Overall, a nice duel level. And, I don’t know why, but this level reminds me of my own level called Forest Green.

So overall, this is a great CTF/Battle pack by Snooze. I know I’ve overrated some levels by Snooze, like some levels from NAII and NAIII, but I’m going to give this pack a well-deserved 9. ;0

Underworld is a small level with a quite original layout and theme (there are more levels with this theme but this one is a bit different)

Deinspirated Mayhem is a nice level with a layout that looks like it’s uninspired (because the layout can’t be compared to another level’s layout) This level has good eye candy too.

EDIT: j/k, decent pack with some good levels like Hard Cheese and Neglected Future is decent too. The battles are not bad either, but overall the levels are way too big (a few exceptions) and have some strange concepts. It’s good to try it, but not always very well executed.

This is a new level by Snooze, and it uses Beach+ Sunset. It was made extremely quick, and it shows that Snooze still has the snzspeed. But the question is: is this level good or not?

This level has a really open layout, and it has a lot of vines, springs and float ups. So the flow is pretty good. While the level is medium-sized it feels bigger than it actually is. Compared to some of Snooze’s other levels this level focuses more on gameplay, which is good.

The eye candy is undoubtedly the best part of this level. The level is very colourful and makes the best use of this set so far (better than Condemned, sorry PJ xP) While it might look random to some people Snooze definitely put somet thought in it. The background is extremely nice too. The level is really surreal. Snooze is really good at making surreal levels and he has proved it with this.

This level has 3 carrots and 3 Power-Ups. The Power-Ups are Bouncer, RF and Toaster (almost every MP level by Snooze has a toaster PU) There is enough ammo so you won’t run out easily. There is a lot of bouncer ammo at the top, but personally I don’t mind.

Then a special section about the music. Snooze used an instrumental version of the song ‘Fairytale’. This song inspired him to make this level.

This level is really good. Download it now. You won’t be disappointed. ;0

A nice little Battle level by Ragnarok. It uses a tileset that’s not really overused but it has been used a few times before with success (Pearl-Shell Shore, Sunken Realm) but this level has really good tileset use and eye candy.

I’m also glad that the level has almost no seekers (and there’s no Seek PU!)

It’s been a while since I’ve written a normal review. This will be a short one.

Introduction

Two members of OLC have made a collaboration level using IC-Jungrock1. This was totally unexpected to me, so let’s see if the level is good..

Layout

This is a pretty small Battle level (with the size of 120×64) but it feels a lot bigger because there are different areas. The level has an interesting design, with lots of narrow passages. There are also some dead ends (like in the corners) but they are probably placed for tactical purposes. And there are also some pits (some people would say ZOMGPITS now) but these pits are very clear and well-placed.

Gameplay and flow

The level is pretty open at places (like at the top right) but like I said there are also some narrow passages. There are a lot of vines and a copter (that’s needed to get something, read more about that later) So the player is forced to jump a lot. There are not a lot of springs, but there are a lot of one ways. The green spring at 104,47 might mislead the player because you cannot use it but it’s still there. The flow is still good. There are some small platforms but you can just run over them without falling down.

Eye candy and theme

The tileset used is a bit underused (because I have used it and maybe 1 or 2 other people) but I think this is the 2nd finished level on J2O that uses this tileset. And this level has the best eye candy EVAR (with this set) It’s how Jungrock is supposed to be. The background is also really good.

Placement of stuff

The ammo placement is good. There are only 3 types of ammo: gun9 ammo, Bouncer ammo and RF ammo. So no Toaster, Seeker, Gun8, Freezer and TNT. There are 4 carrots, and they’re well-placed (one of them is in a dead end at the top) The level has a lot of food, which is also interesting but you need it to get the Seek PU (yes, a Seek PU) You need to get the Seek PU with sugar rush (correct me if I’m wrong) The delay is 90 seconds so only few people will get it.. There are three other Power-Ups. A Blaster Power-Up (delay 30 seconds, with initial delay), a RF Power-Up (delay 45 seconds, with initial delay) and a Bouncer Power-Up (delay 45 seconds, also with initial delay) So if this level gets played in an event no-one would have a PU until 30 seconds are over. There are also some fast fires, and they also have an initial delay and a delay of 30 seconds.

Further comments

This level looks like it’s built for events, and I can see that this level will be a lot of fun during the next JDC season. As a single level it’s really good, and I’d like to see more Battle levels like this. There were not enough good Battle levels last year, so hopefully there will be more good Battle levels like this one. I give this level an 8.4 and a download recommendation.

This music is very good. It’s not just a remix with a few things added, but it has lots of channels and the ARE YOU READY is pretty neat. It’s not too boem boem which is good because most of the remixes I’ve heard were boem boem. So I give this an 8.7. :M

No, but seriously, this is a pretty good level with some nice EC tricks and smart use of bridges. The layout is a bit different, and has some interesting stuff (like the warps above the Bouncy PU) and some nice RF spots (always good to have)

Introduction

After releasing Dreamless and making a start with Dreamless II, Snooze made a CTF level. This might be his last level for a while, but he will probably upload Dreamless II later in 2009. This level, called Destroyed Cassis Factory, uses 7th Lava Fall. Some people might not know what cassis is.. it’s just blackcurrant. In Holland we call it cassis. It’s also a drink.. just like miXXed up cassis. Anyway, enough talking. On to the review!

Layout

This level is symmetrical, and it’s pretty big in JCS. However, it doesn’t feel that big in my opinion. The layout is pretty easy to learn. There are some tubes in the level, and also some float ups in the middle. There are some RF climb spots (including the RF Climb spot 4 SJ) The bases are at the left and right sides. There are also turrets near the bases which make them easier to defend. And there are warps at the far left and far right.

Gameplay and flow

I’ve played a few 3v3s in this level, and I have to say that it plays well. The bases are easy to defend, but it’s also pretty easy to rts here. The tubes are really needed when playing here. I’ll explain why later. The flow is alright. It’s easy to move around the level and you don’t have to jump a lot (except when you use the tubes) And there are some springs that take you up.

Eye candy and theme

With a name like Destroyed Cassis Factory you expect something interesting. 7th Lava Fall is a tileset that’s pretty overused, but Snooze managed to make something original with it. The eye candy in layer 6 is original because it’s supposed to look like bent steel (which explains why the factory is destroyed) The layer 7 also has some of that. There is also some good usage of the pipes here. The layer 8 is also pretty original. The other eye candy is also pretty good. I haven’t seen a lot of levels with this tileset that had good eye candy. The level’s theme seems really good and original (although we’ve had several other factories like Abandoned Robotics Factory and The Zerox Factory) This level is different compared to those because it’s a cassis factory. I mean, who else could think of such a theme? (it’s a shame I didn’t think of something like this before because I really like cassis)

Placement of stuff

This level has 4 PUs. A Toaster PU at the right side, a RF PU at the left side and a Bouncy PU and Gun8 PU in the middle. The ammo placement seems good enough. It might respawn a bit fast but because there is not too much ammo (but there are some big groups of ammo near the Power-Ups) it’s okay. There are 3 carrots. 2 +1 carrots and 1 Full NRG. The +1 carrots are at the top left and top right (like I said before you can use the tubes to get them easier. But you can also use the warps.) The Full NRG is at the top middle. The placement of it is good as people can try to hit someone that camps it with gun9. And there are also some soft drinks and soda pops that are probably there for the theme. JJ2 doesn’t have something that looks like cassis but because I used soft drinks in 6 Hour Energy Drink Snooze can use them in this level.

Further comments

This level is probably not Snooze’s best level, but I think it’s at least one of his best CTF levels. I think this level is pretty fun and I wouldn’t mind playing it sometimes. I give this level an 8.3 and a download recommendation.

Level rating: 8.5

Introduction

This level, City of the Sn00zE, has already been uploaded but that was in Codename: Alliance, a pack of 17 levels. Due to popular request Purplejazz uploaded it as a separate level, so the level could possibly get more attention. This level deserves a good review, as I’ve played it several times now and now that it’s uploaded as a separate level I finally get the chance to do it. So beware.

Layout

The level is semi-symmetrical, and has a few big platforms and lots of small platforms (roofs) and one ways. It also has several warps and secret passages. I think that the layout is pretty easy to learn, even when it’s not entirely symmetrical. The underground (aka the |U|||||||n|||||||D|||||||e|||||||R|||||||g|||||||R|||||||o|||||||U|||||||n|||||||D) is a bit darker than the upper area of the level. One of the bases is placed at the l33test position ever (13,37) I feel special because I was the first one who found out that it was placed at that position (except PJ himself who placed it there intentionally)

Gameplay

Like I said, there are lots of one ways and warps and there are also some vines. The flow is alright. You have to jump a lot but that’s probably the tileset’s fault (because it’s a pain to use) The balance seems okay. No red or blue bias like in some popular levels. And yay for all those textstrings that are hard to find (one is in the wall so if you find that without looking in JCS you’re cheating. Yes, I looked in JCS because I couldn’t find all of them.)

Eye candy and theme

For the given tileset, the eye candy is really good (GUD AND STRONG) Really, if anyone uses this set without making lots of tilebugs or boring eye candy that person is a winner (Snooze already did it with Persona Lity) Almost all eye candy is in layer 4, except some tiles that were needed to make things tile (now that was a weird sentence.) There’s enough eye candy in the walls too. The background is pretty (and I <3 the fade colour) The theme seems to be some sort of city where the Sn00zE lives (so BEEHAIV OR U GETT VOTB) and the music fits, as it sounds pretty happy.

Placement of stuff

This is a level with 3 Power-Ups (actually 4, but 3 different ones) and 3 carrots. The 2 Bouncy Power-Ups are at the top left and top right. The Toaster Power-Up is in the middle (sort of at the top, but under the platform between the two Bouncy Power-Ups) The Seek Power-Up is in the UnDeRgRoUnD (it looks like it’s closer to the red base though) There are 2 +1 carrots. One near each base. The Full NRG is in the middle, although it seems a bit closer to the blue base. I guess that still makes it balanced.. however, the only Gun9 ammo seems closer to the red base too. Not that it matters much though. The other ammo placement seems alright. There are no fast fires in this level, which seems good.

Further comments

This level, called City of the Sn00zE, has potential to become popular. And I think it already is, because people often suggest to play it. If you didn’t get Alliance yet (although I doubt it with more than 20000 downloads) then download this. Even when you already downloaded it I recommend to download this as it will make ur head asploed. I also recommend to host this. It’s good for team games, but even duels work well although it might take long. I give this a 9.7! No, just kidding. I give this an 8.4 and like I said, I also give this a download recommendation.
