Well, Violet has edited his scraparap conversion. Im glad, since I like how scraparap was originally designed.
Firstly, I can’t think of any missing tiles, there are spikes and rockes and those magnets, there is even flashing wires and those black layer 5 or whatever it is. The color is also well made, looks like the original scraparap. Nice added tiles though the destruct blocks look a bit strange. Sorry for the short review, but I’ll add on to it when I have time. For now my rating is 8.7, but It may be upgraded/downgraded when I add on to my review. For now it stays 8.7Edit: Glancing at the tile placement I found it a bit difficult to use, but looking at what can be made with this level I am forced to upgrade my rating to a 9. Great Job![This review has been edited by Blackraptor]
Wow, the 5th bash. Anyways, I’ll just review the chosen CTF levels for fun, (Which I will most likely do for the battle pack as well).
Here goes:
Level 1: Zatox Station67
By:CelL
Well, Im not surprised that this level has been chosen. The tileset use and eyecandy is quite remarkable here, makes it seem realistic. The layout and ammo is quite strongly made as well, a solid choice for this pack.
Angelic Warfare
By: CelL and RagE
This level is also one of my favorites. I like the way it was designed, and the way CelL and RagE used the heaven tileset. I also expected this level to be in the pack.
BloodBunny’s Layer:
By: Bloodbunny
Well, I think this level has been in every bash so far, despite its very overplayed. Though I played this many times, I still quite like the layout. Its very roomy and easy to travel around. Though it sometimes gets irritating if you fall down while jumping on platforms, this level is good for running around in and dueling etc.
Martian Megatropolis:
By:UrJazzCC
Hmm…This level is also well made, though I didn’t like the dead ends where the powerups were. I liked some components used in this level and thought of them as quite interesting. This level is also quite underplayed so adding it to AB5 would do good and add it some popularity.
SPACE ISLAND LEVEL WITH ISLANDS:
By: EvilMike
This is an unusual type of CTF level, but that makes it fun to play. I like the triggering systems used here and all that, and I basically like the idea. Though I hadn’t a clue that this level would of been included in the bash, Im quite glad it was.
Celestial Wargrounds:
By: Enigma, I think…
Hmm…another heaven level. Some things I liked about this was the carrot placement and the floatups for easier gameplay. The level was wellmade and was also fun to play.
This level is Untitled
By: EvilMike
Another level by EvilMike. The layout here is good, somethings I didn’t like about the placement was the clump of stuff around the blaster powerup. I don’t think so much fastfires in one place was necessary. The level itself was also well made.
One Silver Penny:
By: CelL
Another great pick by BlurredD, the level not only looks great but plays well as well. I think I’ve said enough about this level in my review about it, so I haven’t much else to say.
High Volume CTF:
BY: FiresworD
Im not surprised this level got chosen. It has a very good balance, and designed nicely. The ammo was placed nicely as well.
Arabian Highlands:
By:Super Saiyan
Wow, I had no idea that this level would be chosen, but like for many others, Im glad it did. The level design was good here, I like the tileset use as well. An interesting, but good choice by BlurredD.
Knightmare Castle:
By: I have no clue whatsoever.
The first thing I noticed was the interesting eyecandy, great use of BlurredD’s castle remake. The layout was pretty good as well. I can’t say I’ve played this level before, so I dont know by whom it is.
Swinging Jazz:
By: BloodBunny
Hmmm..Im glad this level had been edited so the sides arent open, this way the chance of a flag bug happening is very dim. The layout is ok, but I think this level, like some others in the pack, is severely overhosted.
Happy Castle CTF: (aka JAIL)
By: Stripe, Bobby, Quist.
Hmm…JAIL has been included. Though it is an ok level, I think its been overhosted to much. I don’t mind it in the pack, but I wished for some less popular levels, so that those levels can have their share of popularity as well. The level is good though.
Happy Semi-Conductor CTF:
By: Stripe
I quite expected this level to be in the pack. It has an interesting design and fun to play. Though it is overused, I still think it should be in the pack because its one of the best CTF Levels.
Darker Science
By: Shadow[GpW]
This level has also been included in some bashes before it, and the level is also well done.
SmogCTF
By:EvilMike
Another unexpected level. The layout in this level I found ok, except I haven’t a clue how to get the RF powerup(without checking JCS at least)
Security Breach V2:
By: BlurredD
I have always loved to play SB(security Breach for you clueless people), mainly because of its great balance and layout. BlurredD has inlcluded his non jail version, which is good, since jail sucks for duels =P Anyways, SB isone of my all time favorites and im glad BlurredD included it in the pack.
Diamondus Warzone:
By: Epic
AAHHH no, not this fiendish level. Its probably the most overhosted and overplayed CTF level ever!!!Its also included in probably every CTF bash btw.
Dirty Laundry:
By: Bloodbunny
I also knew this level would get included. I don’t have much to say about it, except its also overhosted. Anyway’s, its still nice to have it in the CTF pack though.
Claustro Mania
By:Shadow[GpW]
I quite like this level as well, good use of the mez tileset , interesting layout etc. Though I feel the suckers are a bit slow and there’s too much of them. Other than that, not a problem.
ShockWawe
By:Shadow[GpW]
A tubelectric level which I’ve played often, but not often have I seen it hosted. Its interestingly designed and well made. Its a great level and Im glad it made it into the pack.
Fiersome Flaggin’:
By: Disguisey Wisey the wise guy in a disguise (Disguise)
This level is also interesting, though I do not like the dead ends or all those fastfires in one place easy to get.Other than that, its a pretty good level.
Well, some interesting levels included here, others are overhosted though. Anyways, happpy AB5 Bash everyone!
[This review has been edited by Blackraptor]
Well, I’ve seen this hosted many times and since Darkhelmet asked me to review this, I guess I will.
TILESET/TILESET USE: The tileset used was castle. The tileset use, I found some of it interesting. Like the layer 5 (or at least it looked like 5 to me) with those backround eyecandy things on top of the brown backround brick tiles, that was really cool. Though there was a deal of backround eyecandy missing (no layer 6 or 7). There wasnt much foreground stuff as well, but at least it was basic.
Pros: Basic eyecandy, the layer 5 thing amused me.
Cons: Just basic.
Rating:6
PICKUP/ENEMY PLACEMENT: Well, the author has included some powerups here, and they were placed ok. The ammo could use more creativity in some places, other than that there werent much inconveniences. Springs were sometimes placed annoyingly.
Pros: Basically ok
Cons: Nothing really extraordinary.
Rating:5.7
ORIGINALITY: Well, its hard to be original since there is so much castle levels out there. The top was somewhat original, but nothing else. For a new levelmaker using overused tilesets, originality is quite hard for them to master, so I wont ratethis level on originality, but good job on the layer 5 top thing.
GAMEPLAY/DESIGN: I found some flaws here. There were some small ones like the fact I wasnt particulary fond of the left side, since the bottom of it was a big dead end (the only way to get out is to go back up, since there is a wall to the left and columns to the right, as well as a floor to the bottom) I did’nt like the fact that I sometimes bumped into the sucker in the wall and it jutted me back, some triggers could of solved this but it wasnt really a big problem. I also wasnt particulary fond of where the warp in the bottom takes you.
Pros: Basic gameplay
Cons: Many things could of been better, and some small downfalls.
Rating: 5.5
Replay value/fun factor: The level is easy to move around at, and would be fun to play with more people, except for the small gameplay downfalls.
Pros: Fun to play
Cons: Some annoying things
Rating: 6.5
OVERALL: A small nicely designed level, with no real complaint except for some small ones which don’t hurt the level toobadly. Its ok and quite good for your second level.
Pros: Nicely done, basic and fun to play
Cons: Some small errors such as lack of eyecandy, potential dead end, warps not really needed, ammo was sometimes strange, somethings could of been fixed.
Rating:5.7
Final Rating: 5.88=I’ll give this a 6 and good job on it.
One more thing, the next level setting is to a different level which isn’t included in the pack. This isn’t good, since the player may not have the other level. Sadly, the rating was dropped by .1 point and was rounded to a 5.7. =([This review has been edited by Blackraptor]
I will use the same reviewing method that Violet and Trafton use, since it works the best.
Firstly, like people mentioned, the gametype isnt new, I’ve seen it before a few times. I have expected a great deal more from this level, hoping it was a fun king of the hill game, but its a basic level, nothinh special, and looks like the author was in a rush to show his “new” gametype and most likely only spent 5 min on his level.
TILESET/TILESET USE:
The level uses the diamondus set, as the above reviewers probably mentioned, thankfully, it uses the day version, which is a bit less used than the night one. The tileset use, though, is very poor. The slope you’re on when you start isn’t done very well (look at the edges plz) and hardly any tiles are used. I was quite dissapointed in this, since there isnt any eyecandy whatsover, the backround isnt even textured (!!) and well, you get the point.
Pros: More than 1 tile was used.
Cons: Many.
Rating:1
PICKUP/ENEMY PLACEMENT:
In levels like these, I’d expect some more ammo. All there is are some seekers and ice surrounding the platform you stand on (which is like 4 tiles wide). The ammo would cause chaos, and some ammo is placed really low so that only spaz can get it by falling and double jumping back up.
Pros: At least there is ammo, and the ammo choice could of been worse
Cons: A bit Spaz biased, all clumped (which is mainly because of level side I might add)
Rating: 1.5
ORIGINALITY: No. There could of been something new and interesting here, but there isnt.
Rating:1
Gameplay/design: I would give this a 0, if I could, but 1 is the lowest. Gee, youre on a single platform, with clumps of ammo surrounding you, a pit of water below which you cant get out of, and around 10 people in your server playing. Firstly, I don’t know how everyone can fit on a one tile platform, secondly, based on the size I’d say this would only last around 2 minutes, maybe less.
Pros: None
Cons: Everything
Rating:1
Replay Value/Fun factor: Unless you consider falling off a 4 tile platform into a pit of water and that you can’t get out fun, then I would give this a 1.
Pros: No.
Cons: Not fun, too short, not enough room to support many players.
Rating:1
OVERALL: A poorly designed level, which can only hold about 3-5 players, and that there is no way of winning this level unless you use controller (but that wouldnt do anything since THE LEVEL DOESNT HAVE A NEXT LEVEL SETTING!!!At least there is someammo here.
Pros: At least the author remembered to include ammo.
Cons: Poorly designed, bad gameplay, ammo clumped, no next level setting, bottomless pit which you can’t get out of etc etc.
Rating: 1.2
FINAL RATING: 1.116666667=I’ll be nice and give this a 1.2, since it could of been worse.
Disguise’s first actual set with paint shop pro 8, lets see how this set does.
TILES: The basic tiles are all there, suckers, destruct blocks, vines and poles. I have no complain with the basic tiles. The other tiles though, I thought this level could use some more. It would be cool if there was a jet of fire sticking out of the ground, so you get hurt if you touch it, or some skulls and stuff, but there isnt any of that. There are some tiles of strange things which I think are people in misery, but not much extra stuff. I like those blue and red ground tiles since they would be useful in CTF, but they dont fit the theme of the set much othervise. The ground looks strange, that peachy ground and that other one which looks like roots and stuff. Though its strange, its well designed and well textured. The backround is ok, the bg eyecandy is also good, though its hard to tell what those things are unless you stare at them closely in your JCS for a while.
COLOR: The color, lets see. In the dark version there isnt that much of a variety in color, same with the light. Most of the things are a brownish color or a color similar to brown. Except for the red and blue ground and suckers (and maybe some other things which I possibly forgot) most of the tiles are a similar color. Though it is hard making an inferno or an agony tileset with as much color as a jungle one lets say (you can prove me wrong if you’d like) the set still could of had some more color.
USERFRIENDLY: The user friendliness….hmm Disguise tried his best to make the set as userfriendly as possible, by mentioning some stuff in the description, pointing out what is what in the tileset, but still, it isnt very userfriendly. Though the things Diguise did definately helped people understand the set more, it still may be quite confusing. Though it is more userfriendly than some of disguise sets (take africa as an example) it isnt what you would call “simple to use”. People can still make great levels with this, it will just take some time to get used to the tileset, which is quite natural.
TEXTURENESS: Wow, the texture is amazing here, Disguise has shown to us what PSP 8 can do. The ground and most things are quite textured, though Ive seen better, this is still great.
OVERALL: Tiles=8, COLOR=6, USERFRIENDLY=7, TEXTURENESS=9
That adds up to 8, which is what I would give this. Not the best disguise set Ive seen, but a good one to say the least. Great Job disguise.
Well, my 350th review…
Anyways, its been a while till CelL made a conversion.
What I can see is that this is a newer version of the previous Battle ships conversion cell made.
The tileset remake is alright, I would definately prefer it than the older version. Some added on tiles here and stuff. Though it still could of had some more stuff, Its currently fine the way it is. Easy to use, and color is good. I dont feel like writing a long review on this, so Ill give it a 7.7 and a download recc.
Anyways, to extend the content of my review I will point out some things I liked in this conversion.
-Great Texture in those fires
-Well made arrows
-Destruct blocks fit the theme and look cool
-Some things looked nice and all.
……..Hmmm….my status hasnt changed…I thought surely…oh well.[This review has been edited by Blackraptor]
Ok, i have played this many times online, and given many suggestions to this. I still think 2 powerups are a bit to much for this level, but its better than the 3 that were in the level in the first version. The ammo isnt that creative when you look at it, but it shows that the designer at least understood how to use ammo properly, though it could of been better. I didnt like the layout much, the warps could be quite unexpected to new players and they can be quite irritating. Also, when you look closely at the level you see many tileset bugs in the wall. Some places were sorta pointless, like the spring arena, and the level looked empty and bare. Anyways, the level is about average, so I have to agree with Trafton on the raitng. Nothing new about this, but definately good for your first level. keep trying!
Ill actually give this a 5.2, sincethe tileset use, though buggy, is a bit better than average and brings up the mark.
OMG My long review that I did for some reason got deleted, so I will start all over. I should get paid for reviewing this. Anyways, the download has been fixed and I can finally see this. It wasnt as good as I expected it. I hope my review will be longer than traftons, and this tiem I will just talk about all the levels altogether, since I am not willing to rewrite my whole review again in the same old fashion. The intro level (SXR INTRO) looked a bit screwy, but at least it was understandable. It confused me a bit though. Level 1 I started right on top of the boss. Reading Traftons review it made me think if I was suppose to start right before the boss, or if it was a glitch. Anyways, you basically have to fight 2 robot bosses, thats basically it. The next level (level 2) named Carrotus Chaos had interesting music. The enemies were poorly placed, some where placed in poor locations and they were overused. There were barely any pickups in this level, except for some ammo and coins. The level was short and easy, and was boring. I didnt like it much. The next level (3) has a name ripped off from lord of the rings, the fellowship of the rings (mines of moria). The level had a serious case of having to many enemies, so much that I thought I would get an enemy error playing it. I felt the backround could of been warped, since it was a bit dullish. The storyline in this level was quite amusing. There were some spiffy secret passages. In one place i thought I was barricaded in because I had no clue there was a warp in the top right corner. A lot of places were very narrow, and I’ve gotten stuck in many places in this level. The food, when it appears, is usually all clunched up. This level is also quite difficult, especially the maze which takes forever to beat. The next level (level 4)is named sandy censored. The eyecandy isnt bad here, but the enemy placement is. It is all clunched up and sometimes you cant get out without getting hit by an enemy. There are way to many gems in the crates, and due to the enemies the level lacks in fun factor. I have nothing much to say about this level except that its nearly impossible. The next level (5) named Holy Tree, which I think is a weird name. The level is a bit better. Only in some places zounds of enemies attack you, while in others its all peaceful. There is barely any eyecandy and the backround is dull as well. In a lot of places you are forced to get hurt because there are tons of enemies around you. The only place which really caught my attention was at the end, the mystic forest, except for the annoying generating bees. The next level is also made with the diamondus set and I didnt like it. I got stuck on a vine (you know how after you warp if you wall onto a hook or vine you may get stuck) Also, the part of the level with the control panel was difficult and bored me, i didnt like it. The level itself was confusing and took a while to beat. Level 7 is named Knight Fight and uses the medivo set. The whole level is sorta narrow, and I didnt like the fact that enemies are placed right on top of one ways. I found some eyecandy bugs, and like most of the levels this one was confusing. There were some fiendish parts, and some fun parts in this level. Next level (8) has a strange name (mmmm….sugary =)) and it uses a candion conversion made by dethman or sometimes (i had no clue he made conversions). This was one of the funnes t levels in the pack. At first glance the level looked quite nice. I liked the backround. The enemies were still clunched up though. Eyecandy is ok, soemtimes strange, but ok. Soem of the puzzles were really fun here, and there were a lot of fun parts. I enjoyed playing this level. Next level, Radical and Funky something (I kinda forgot the name) has funny music =P. Sadly, the enemies dont give you a break here and they are clunched up again (I can easily relate the enemy placement in these levels to those of RHG) and some parts were also fun (like that spring place and the hat trick place) The level had a lot of creativity in it, but some parts looked kinda ugly. The level isnt that hard, nor long. Lvl 10, tech central has some cool secrets, good music and stuff. The eyecandy is decent here, I loved the secrets. Though the goodies and enemies were clumped again, the level was still interesting, but kinda short. The next level, which I mistook for the last, is called JAzz cloned. ITs basically a boss level where you have to fight 3MCE jazz bosses. Nothing that interesting. Level 12, named electric slide, also has great music (most of the levels do). Though I think the enemies were still overused, some parts of the level were fun to play (like the beginning). I liked the eyecandy here though, except for the many tile bugs, though the eyecandy possibly could of been better. I think that in some places the soda pop food item was way overused, and ther could of been more variety in food and ammo. In the area around pos 40,40, I couldnt get out. Also, the level is easier to play with spaz, since he can sidekick all those enemies at once while it will take jazz a while. Bunny BBQ also had clumped enemies. The text was interesting, and so where the puzzles. Good music BTW. Just when I thought I had finally reached Eva and that this was the last level, it wasnt. The pickup placmeent is ok. Mount puzzle was an amusing levels. I dont remember any enemies being here (though I may have forgotten) and the puzzles were cool, though extremely difficult. Again, I saw some tiling bugs. the first puzzle wasnt that hard, though I couldnt solve the second puzzle. The 3rd puzzle was quite easy. I felt that there could of been some hints in the puzzles, because sometimes I had no idea of what to look for or what to do. Im surprised there werent any clumped up enemies here O.o. The next level, flames of revenge, is evil. The music was good, but the level was EXTREMELY annoying. There shouldnt have been 2 poles together in the beginning, the enemy has a godo chance of hurting you there. I also had no clue that the lava was a hurt event the first time I played ,because I jumped over the text sign that said that. The enemies here were espeically clumped up. The warp parts were usually annoying and sometimes made me loose lifes and stuff. Some parts I didnt like because it was hard not getting hurt there (like position 191, 42) and you cross that place multiple tiems. The spikeball part you must get hurt at, because the spike balsl are almost impossible to avoid. Yay, you finally found eva. Last fight: OMG finally, the last level. First of all, the backround irritated me because of the speed it was moving at. The weapon stock isnt as good as I hoped it to be. You have to fall like 600 tiles down before you finallly land in the battle arena where you face 3 devans. The last credits level was fun =).
OVERALL: Firstly, I wrote this whole review on paper, then typed it out, then had to retype it because something happend. It took me 4 hours playing and reviewing this level, and i hope i wont do this again. It is hard to add up the mark for this pack, because the levels all have different quality levels. I havent played the extra multiplayer levels, but will soon after. I think ill give this about a 7.5 and a download recc. Great work!
Let me just first say that this one I liked more than your castle one. Though I sometimes despise the set psych, I really like this version. My first impression was wow. I had never really expected it to be this good. Firstly, the backround has a nifty color to it, the blue is amazing. The backround mountains look cool too, I especially liked the ones with the musical instruments. next, the color of those rocks is an amazing idea. I espicially like that you’ve added in the unmasked rocks to make some scenery look cavish. The rock color i loved. The colors of varius things such as the magical hat or the guitar or mushrooms was also done quite well, really nice to look at. The spikes are made well, I couldnt get stuck in them, though I tried many times to. Also, it seems that BlurredD has added in some extra tiles. Not to much, but the tiles he added in are really useful and boosted the mark up by some. There is some small rain. Though I dont like how it’s drawn, it still is a good addition. There is the beautiful looking waterfalls which I really like, they’re definately a good addition and make the set more interesting. Also some unmasked rock scenery to make caves and stuff, which also makes the set more interesting and less “one themed”. The palette is quite good. The reason I didnt give this like a 9 or something is mainly because, it just doesnt feel like psych anymore. Sure, the colors are great and everything, if this tileset was the first of its kind, I would rate much higher. When I played it I felt like I was in a completely different place, not psych, but a mountanous region. Though this doesnt stop people from using this set, I still lowered the mark by a bit for it, because it feels like a completely different set, not a remake of psych. But like Trafton mentioned in his review, I completely admired the idea of a stormy psych =)
The vedict: This is a great set, with no real cons that interfere with levelmaking. The idea is great, and I do like this more than the original psych. Not only that but there are extra very useful tiles to make the set more interesting and different themed. The infamous spike bug is fixed here, so you wont have to type in jjk and loose lifes every time you get stuck in a level with this set. Anyways, its really great and all, but not too original. A definite download reccomendation from me.
A level by wakeman.
Firstly, let me mention that the tileset rocked, and I havent played Claw and have no clue what it is. Well, about the level. Yes, it is a fairly short single player level, and I didnt like it as much. The eyecandy was good, except the foreground I despised, I couldnt tell where I was going or where the ground was in some places, and I crashed into enemies blocked by layer 3 columns. I despised that, also the sudden booby traps that appear without warning and are quite hard to avoid. I dont reccomend having the demon right on the save point either. The eyecandy mostly confuse me and that lowered the mark by a great deal. The backround is good though. One more thing, sometiems when you go to low in the level, you see the columns in the backround “floating”. It is minor and hardly noticable, but I just pointed it out.
The enemy placement I also didnt like much. Some enemies=placed good. Some=not. There were hoards of enemies in some places and some were blocked by later 3 and were hard to see. Other than that they were good.
Pickup placement: A little on the sparse side, perhaps? There WERE pickups, and they WERE well placed, but I feel there could of been more. Also, the coin idea was interesting, but kind of confusing. I didnt like the spike pit, since you loose a life for almost no reason, and well, I just didnt like it. The apple in the end idea was strange, could of been in a text, but someone wanted some “creativity” or something. The gameplay was kind of poor, since the falling rocks were hard to avoid, the vines hard to see and the spikes almost everywhere. I also despised that wind or whatever it was shaking me, because at the top of the level I almost got stuck to a wall, and when I got free the wind pushed me into a pit where I fell to the bottom of the level on spikes. The first time this happend, I couldnt find the way out of the pit because layer 2 or 3 or whatever was covering the way out.
OVERALL: Though I sounded negative in the review, the level wasnt that bad. Although I didnt like it enough to give it 7.5 or 8, it still had some good elements to it and some things were done quite nicely. I’ll give this a 7 and a download reccomendation. Glad to see you’ve returned wakeman.
Well, it is a tileset by disguise ;P
The tileset, unlike its previous fish version, looks more papery and cartoony. The flying pigs are interesting, but i dont like how the tiles are drawn or how they look. Like Violet said, this is too one themed, which gets boring. Looking at it I think it would be hard making a good level with it, but at least its easy to use. It looks kinda bad, and there should be more colors, pink does get boring after looking at it for a while.
Pros: Its a tileset. Easy to use, masking works, has ground in it and stuff.
Cons: One themed, small, one colored.
OVERALL: Though Ive seen much worse, its definately not the best by disguise, and I did like FiShY more. Download this if you want, but i dont reccomend it much.
Hmmm….joy, I knew this would come out sooner or later. Sadly, I cant download this or rate this yet, but i will as soon as my computer was fixed. Expect a long review from me.
Well, like I promised, here is the long review.Firstly let me say that the example level was good and showed a lot, and the button idea was really good, since the buttom tiles come into use.
Now lets begin the review:
Water: Since a good percentage of this level is based on the look of the water, I have to include this in my review. The water actually looks quite great. Though it looks purple, that is good since the water isnt “pure” on this planet. The water is one of the best I have ever seen. It looks good AND fits into the theme of the tileset. Plus the water goes into a combination with the switches to make it go up and down. Not many levels that are themed around water turn out good, but one with this tileset can be great! There are also “underwater alternatives” as it says in the set, which if you dont feel comfortable using water you can make something that resembles water, which is great.
INCLUDED TILES:
Hmm…I havent played Dreempipes in a while, but based on what I see and remember all the tiles are included. Heck, there are even those buttons and eggs of that giant bird included! I have nothing wrong with the included tiles. Also, there are extra tiles which violet himself made, such as the hooks destruct blocks etc. And the textured backround looks beautiful! There are also belts, suckers, destruct blocks, hooks, poles, vines and many more. What more can you ask for! There is a variety of tiles so you can make numerous different settings and use you imagination and creativity to the full power! This definately gets high marks!
Pros: Everything
Cons: None that I can see of.
Rating: 9.7
COLOR:
The color here is also great. Like I mentioned before, the water actually looks good in this set O.o And the textured backround is amazing. I also fell in love with the belts, that color is awesome! The sucker tubes and tunnels look quite good too! The green ground and backround look great! The water looks a bit strange but its still good. The color shocks me here at how well its done.
Pros: Basically everything.
Cons: None that I can see of or that are worth mentioning.
Ratin: 9.5
Masking:
The first thing Ive noticed is some text in the mask ;p Lol, though its funny to read and I have no problem with it, I wont give extra marks because violet is a “cowfish”. The thing I found that sort of bugged me is the tunnel mask is to thin. While playing the xample level, when i jumped in the tunnel I was slowed down by the mask because I almost went through it (yes, it is that thin). Though this only decreased the rating by a bit, it can become a nuisance, especially in race games where people are new to this set. Generally, I found the masking to be ok, except there are to many thin masks in this set, and im not exactly a fan of that.
Pros: Masking is good.
Cons: Sometimes its to thin and gets annoying.
Rating: 9.2
Animations:
Wow. Thats what describes this the most. There are many animations in this tileset. Arrows, waterfalls, water rivers, arrows on suckers, small barely seen flashing dots on the yellow triangles, waterfalls in what looks like a glass tube, blue and green buttons, water control buttons, water on ground, small waterfalls(variety), belts and destruct blocks, to name them. Though some animations you can barely see, others are quite good. I find no problem with the animations, they are quite well done.
Pros: Lots of animations, nicely done
Cons: Some arent that usefull.
Rating: 9.5
Ease to use:
This is the part that lowers the mark of many tilesets down. No matter how much people try, there is still some difficulty using the tileset. This tileset fits that description. Although ive seen many harder to use sets, this one isnt what I would call simple. The large variety in the tiles make the levelmaker think “Gee, I wonder where this goes”. Though the example level helped me understand how to use the set more, I still have some difficulty with it. Though when i look at it from the positive, I see really awesome levels made with this. Though it would take some work and getting used to the set.
Pros: Ive seen more harder to use sets.
Cons: Large vareity confuses you in where to place tiles, not that easy.
Rating: 7.6
FINAL RATING: 9.1, which is rounded closest to 9.2, which id what I would give this.
FINAL COMMENTS: Unlike many of you, Dreempipes wasnt my favorite tileset. The conversiono of the tileset was magnificent though, I dont think you would find a better dreempipes conversion out there. Violet proves again he is number one when it comes to conversions. The tileset is great, and im sure many of us where waiting for it. This is one the greatest conversions, and you MUST download this (unless you want to be like spoy ;p j/k)
Like i said, I’d give this a solid 9.2 and a big download reccomendation.

ONE SILVER PENNY:
Composing Review…….
EYE CANDY:
The eyecandy here shocked me, I was really addicted to it.The backround thing, although its not the first time its been done, is a good addition to the level. The eyecandy doesnt get confusing (since either way, the blue cave tiles are unmasked) Though there isnt anything what you would call new with the eyecandy, its still a good addition. Also, behind those blue backround tiles is the mountainous/river backround and of couse, the warped sky. There is a great deal of backround eyecandy, and it doesnt get to the point where there is to much. There isnt any foreground eyecandy that I can see (aside from the layer 3 used to help with the layer 4)but thats ok, since foreground can tend to confuse you a little. There isnt that many things to mention about eyecandy, and it doesnt get irritating like it does in some levels. The eyecandy is just your good ol’ basic and happy eyecandy which makes the level look really nice. The eyecandy is definately a great addition to the level.
Quick edit: There is some foreground, the trees. I cant beleive i didnt spot them before. Anyways, the trees are good, widely spread in the foreground and dont confuse you at all. (at least thats my point of view. So I have no problem with the trees.
Pros: Great Backround and foreground, everything pretty much good.
Cons: Nothing that shocks you to much like OMG WOW. Other than that, none.
TILE SET USAGE:
Like the eyecandy, the tileset usage is also great. There is a vareity of tiles used (even that flashing white block or whatever you call it is used), though not all the tiles are used (which is actually a good things, since some of the tiles could of ruined the level a bit), there is a good variety and the basic, important tiles are used. I have no problem with the tileset usage. Though i feel more of those gems in the walls could of been used, that barely affects my rating since this isnt very important. Anyways, like I said, nothing wrong.
Pros: Probably almost everything.
Cons: Barely any aside from some minor things, some of which I wont even bother to mention in my review.
GAMEPLAY:
Making great gameplay in levels is even harder than making good eyecandy for most people. The gameplay in this level is quite good. I have dueled someone online with this, and found the gameplay quite satisfying. Though I have a few small complaints, such as the helicopter.(This doesnt have to do specifically with your level, CelL, many levels have this). I dont really think having copters in your levels is that good, since if you’re being chased by someone, having to wait for a copter to appear so you can get away on it is quite irritating. Though I do not mind having a copter in the level, there could of been something such as a spring or a sucker covered by layer 3 there as well incase the copter doesnt appear as quickly as you want it to. I found the “one silver penny warp” a good idea, since it will have you collecting pennies if you ever want a carrot. The warp is also well placed. Though, people may camp at the silver penny, if they know their opponent is injured and lacks a penny. This isnt very good, there could of been another (maybe hidden) penny in the level so people will find it much harder to camp near it on 1vs 1 duels. Also, I have a small complaint. Usually, the person, who at the start, gets roasted by their opponent looses a huge advantage. When I played online with Genex, I got roasted and lost all my pennies and weapons and he gained the upperhand, but he kept it for almost the whole game (until I roasted him). So, what im saying is that in this level, if you get roasted, you automatically loose a great chance of winning, and it will be very hard to reclaim the upperhand. This doesnt affect all levels, some like BBLair you can get roasted many times and quickly regain the upperhand. This isnt a tremendous problem though, but it still affects the mark.
Pros: Gameplay is fine, good spring placement and stuff.
Cons: Helicopter con which I mentioned, camping at the silver coin, hard to regain upper hand.
LAYOUT:
Hmmmm….The levels layout appears to be fine. There are smooth edges (if you know what i mean) and there are springs placed where they should be. The level, infact, almost looks symmetrical, which is good for the layout. I dont have much to say about it, since most is mentionedin gameplay. It is quite easy to travel in this level, and to make geta ways, so i dont havr any complaints.
Pros: Basically everything, excpet for the problems mentioned in GAMEPLAY
Cons: Some places a bit bumpy, and the cons in GAMEPLAY.
PICKUP PLACEMENT/BASE PLACEMENT:
AMMO: I actually quite like how the ammo was placed here. Not only was it placed in a creative fashion, but its not sparce so one could quickly gain some ammo. There is also a large variety to use (bouncer, RF, seeker, electro blaster, toaster i beleive). I have no complaints about ammo, but its not that outstanding either.
CARROT: There is only one carrot in this level, which is the fullenergy. I dont complain about that, since the level is quite small and doesnt need any other carrots. The carrot is placed well, pplcant technically camp at it. The warp for the carrot is also placed well, in the center. The penny is placed well as well, except I think there could of been 2 pennies in the level.
POWERUPS: Hmm…powerups. The seeker is placed good as far as I can see, its placed about in the center. The toaster powerup, though, is placed just on top of the red base, giving them quicker access to it. This can be an advantage for red, since the toaster DOES deal 2 damage, and ppl only have 3 hearts in CTF. But im thankfull that its not the seeker or bouncer that is team based. Other than that, there is a good choice of powerups.
BASES: One base (blue) is placed higher than the other (red) but it isnt a problem. You can get to both bases quite quickly, nut thats because of the size of the level. The red base seems to be more closer to the toaster and the coin though, but it seems blue has an easier access to the warp. There isnt much wrong.
PROS: Creativly placed ammo, not to sparce, carrot warp and carrot placed in center. Bases generally placed well.
Cons: Some things lead to camping, Red base has a greater advantage.
MUSIC: The music is chosen well for the level, though I expected the diamonus music. Nothing wrong with this.
FINAL: I guess ill rate this an 8. I was leaning towards the rating of 8.5 but then as I played further I noticed more cons which took from the rating. The levels is also quite small, I reccomend it for private duels. The level is also quite well made, and it was fun to play. Although definately not CelL’s best, still a great addition to any CTF server or jj2 folder. Great work celL
Ok, replies to comments
Violet: Try playing online with someone from the opposite team as you, then you will see. Also, you forgot to mention eyecandy in your reveiw, which is important to me. Ive also reuploaded the level and fixed the “getting out slowly part”. Thnak you for mentioning that.
Ninja: I await your review, thank you for the comment, and once again thanks for the logo.
Also, if anyone finds any bugs here mention them in your review so I can fix them and reupload. I want the least buggiest version of this level on J2O if possible.
BlurredD: In some places there were some layer 5 tiles missing so I added more.
Labrat: There is music, but only the people who unzip it can hear it.
Yay, currently an 8.[This review has been edited by Blackraptor]
Hmm….an enigmish type of level :P
Lets review shall we.
I remember this level from downloading this from BlurredD’s contest thread, I remembered that I didnt think of it as so good before, but I didnt explore it much. Also, this is probably the first level I’ve seen with vertical rain, woope.
Eyecandy:
The eyecandy of the level was basic. The leaves werent that overused in the place, and some places looked empty with barely anything there. But the eyecandy was well, looked nice and realistic. The thing with the vines look like they are holding up the wooden platform was a creative idea and definately added to the rating I’m giving the level. Also, the leaves on top of the trees was good, it was very realistic and was very interesting. Good job. The eyecandy is mostly basic, with not much surpises. I feel the vine tiles (the hanging ones) may have been a bit overused for the eyecandy. Some places like the bottom right I reccomend there to be a bit more eyecandy and stuff, but it was alright.
Gameplay:
The gameplay was done well here. The middle part was made well. The sides look a bit different, since the left has a dead end with the fastfire pickups, while the right has them on a floating platform. So in other words, you can pickup the fastfires while running away from an enemy on the right, but tat the left you would come to an end and will have to turn around. I didnt like that very much. Also, atthe bottom left, the sucker hidden in the tree, some players may not know that it is hidden there and will probably run into the dead end and will get killed. But thats not to big of a problem, since most people will probably discover the sucker there, or will just avoid that place. There are some floatups used for easier gameplay, and it was alright.
Pickup/spring placement:
The ammo here was mainly placed ok. Most of it was placed in a creative fashion, i didnt find much problems with it. What I did notice is that there was probably way to many fastifres spread across the level. Other than that, I dont have much more to say about ammo, it has a lot of good combinations and stuff. There was only one carrot in the level ,which was a fullenergy. It was placed in the center of the level, and was placed well. Im not sure I found it as amusing as BlurredD though ;P. The springs were placed ok, i didnt have a problem with them. I also couldnt find anything in the level that I should mention about springs, except that that helicopter could of been replaced with something such as a blue spring, because helicopters tend to slow you down a bit.
Anyways, everything here is basically ok.
Generalizing comments: The level itself was ok and interesting to play. Although not my favorite one using the swamps set (I liked Marshland of Evil a bit better) its still a fun level to play. Some minor flaws brought down my rating a bit, but the level is still interesting and I can imagine this level being 3rd place in the contest probably. Enigma did a great job on this and it would probably be hosted several times. The music choice was also well picked, adding some more atmosphere to the level. Enigma did some great work here, and made a good level which I reccomend you to download. This level gets a rating of 8 from me, and thats basically all I have to say for my review. Good job Enigma :)
Well, this is a good fangame. IT has multiple levels and its fun to play. It is easy to beat once u get used to it, but it makesu want to get a higher score every time you play. Graphics very well done, sound could of been better, for instance, it could of been different for every level, same with the setting. The black blocks looked a little strange at first and didnt really fit in, but I got used to them.
Anyways, i cant make a good long review on this game, so ill end of saying it was well doen and fun to play, but could of been better. An 7.7 for your effort. Good job!Yay this sucks ;P j/k
Well, Fs strikes again with some nifty CTF levels. One, Termite Haven, which was entered in BlurredD’s contest. Also, one strangely funny thing is the music an-path (filename) was the same music I wasted time downloading from ModPlug just a few hours ago, and here it appears. Strange….Anywyas, back to the review:
Termite Haven:
The name is very creative, when I first heard it on the forums in BlurredD’s CTF contest winners post i thought this would use some new custom tileset or something. But it actually uses the beach set….The music fits the name and level, great choice. The eyecandy, although people may complain that it confuses the foreground a bit, is awesome. Never have I seen a level using the beach set be similar to this. Great work FS, the eyecandy amazed me in ways I cannot explain. It looked exactly like a nest for termites! All that wood and stuff, the eyecandy is certainly at/near its best! The tileset use is also great, maybe one or two things I thought could of been improved more, but nevertheless it is definately above average showing what you can do w/the beach set. Ammo placement was ok, not great or anything, but it was fine for the level. Though i may reccomend you to ‘mix’ the ammo a bit, because u usually have toaster ammo all together in a pattern, or RF ammo in a pattern all together, but never seeker AND RF in a pattern together, get what I mean. Although this wont drastically change your mark, it will add a bit more creativity to the ammo placement in the level. Gameplay was ok, in the previous version I remember there being a warp which annoyed me a bit, but i cant seem to find it and I think its been switched with a combination of a oneway or a spring. The gameplay was a little bumpy in some places, but it was fine. There was also another warp, the one near the RF, which i didnt like. Some people may not know that the warp is there, and may accidentally hit it before getting the RF powerup they wanted. And, the warp leads to a sector near the seeker powerup (very near), so the player can gain 2 powerups almost at once (if he/she is equipped with an electroblaster at the time). Other than that, i dont have much more to mention about gameplay. Layout was fine, no comment.
Pros(+): Great eyecandy, practically everything above average
Cons(-): Some things annoyed me a bit, eyecandy may confuse, ammo could be better.
Rating for level: I’d rate this level an 8.2, since the eyecadny is near 10, ammo is around 7, gameplay is too and music is good, the level is fun to play and great to look at.
Jungle’s Edge:
The name is also creative, the music is a bit strange, but its ok. I have seen this level hosted by the name of something like Demented Jungle or something. Anyways, the backround really impressed me, I havent seen a backround like it I think. Its almost as good as Termite Haven, it might even be better. All im sure is that the eyecandy in this level definately deserves top marks. Great foreground, amazing backround etc. Tileset use is once again great, I havent a problem with it, except for those strange and partially ugly leaves floating in midair for no reason. Those big ones. The placement of stuff is ok, carrot placed well. Ammo has the same problem as the previous level, needs a bit more creativity. Gameplay is ok, there isnt much to be said about it. some springs needed to be changed into ones that bounce you a bit higher, and i found out that if youre travelling under the log under your own base holding the opposite flag, u score a point. This makes it hard to defend the base, since players will have to cover both inside the log and around the base. Im sure this wasnt done intentionally, but it could have. Layout is ok, some places roomier than others, but there isnt any one tiled passages or stuff(if there was, it didnt bother me) and everything is fine with layout.
Pros(+): Creativity in eyecandy, great backround, layout good, has the material to be a great level.
Cons(-): Ammo lacks more ‘mixing’, some minor problems.
rating for level: probably 8, since the level has great eyecandy and tile use, above average gameplay and layout and average ammo placement. I liked it a bit less than the previous one though, so an 8.
FINAL RATING FOR UPLOADED FILE: 8.2, since these are some of the best levels around and they should be downloaded by people. Great work FS, these are some nifty levels.
Final comments: These levels completely rock, good music, fun to play. They might even make itin Anniversary Bash 5 CTF, who knows. Good job, these levels are a work of art! Definately deserves a strong download reccomendation!
Well, the level is ok. The music choice is different froom the one usually used, and even though im glad its finally different, i still like the overused tune more. The layout is good, its not confusing and its easy to move around in. The carrot placement is ok, I had some doubts about the warps to the fullNRG, but after further testing I found no errors worth mentioning. Ammo is placed well, I have nothing agaisnt it. Eyecandy is good, but it feels like its missing something, could of been a bit more in some places, but its good. The level overally is ok, there isnt much wrong with it, but its nothing really exciting. Its a great effort and worth downloading, but its not as good as the other level (Angelic Warfare) that you both made. Still great thoug, and im giving it a solid 8, almost 8.2 and a download reccomendation.
Oh, and one more thing. It also seemed to me that each of you made your own half, because the 2 halfs look strangely different, its suspicious.
A semi important notice:
There have been some bugs which I have failed to discover, so I have reuploaded this level and now the bugs are fixed. Such bugs are the RF without the generater, which now has it, the gun crate, which is now a gunbarrel and I increased the speed in some sucker tubes. Revieweres may want to reupload, but I reccomend just ignoring the certain points. And about bumping your head on the ceiling, as BlurredD said, sadly I couldnt figure a way to fix it without changing it completely, which I did not want. That is all. Finally, Violet strikes back with another conversion of Holidaious.
Tiles included: Probably all the tiles from the original holidaious are included, even those pesky hands that come out of the ground and ceiling. What more could you want? Some nice tree animations there that are included, a working backround, some important tiles such as destructable blocks and poles, and some eyecandy things. Violet has added in some extra tiles as well, such as the vines, hooks and poles and things, because the original holidaeous didnt include them. This is good, since these enable you to make a great level with this set. Basically, i cant think of any missing tiles.
Color: What can I say, its great. All 3 versions have excellent color which matches that of the original tilesets made for Jazz Jackrabbit Holiday Hare ’94. The backrounds are great, and so are the added tiles. The set is really nice to look at. There is a large variety in color and its all great, I dont know how it could of been a better color edit/remake from an original JJ1 tileset.
Useability: Its ok, some tiles are placed far from others which go with them, and some parts are a bit confusing. Looking at the set at first, I recieved the impression that most novices will get a hard time using this set, but then I quickly got used to where the tiles were placed, and I had no problem. The tileset is perfectly usable, containing every tile (except possibly a sucker tube) which is used to make a good level. I see few problems with this set.
Tiles included rating:3.2/3.5
Color: 2.9/3
Useability:2.6/3.5
Total = 8.7/10
Additional comments: Can Violet get any better? His conversions are amazing. And in this one, violet took the time to make 3 different versions of this set (Evening, day and night). All of them grwat with many strong points. Great to use set. There are some cool animations, and Violet included some extra tiles to make the sets better. These are some of the best conversions I’ve seen, and would definately used by lots of levelmakers. Violet makes conversions look like a work of art.
OVERALL COMMENTS:
These are great! They have every element of a good level (except some suckerz could of been added in) and are great to use and fun to look at. These will definately be the number one choice for any person wishing to make a level with either version of the holidaeious set. A nice christmas tileset (even though its a bit late :P) which I reeccomend everyone to download.
